This study was conducted to investigate sensitivity of woody plants growing in urban and industrial regions of Seoul and Taejon, Korea. Malondialdehyde(MDA) contents were analyzed in tree foliage of Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Ginkgo biloba, Liriodendron tulipifera and Platanus occidentalis. In addition, MDA contents were analyzed in the foliage of tree seedlings, i.e. Pinus densiflora. Pinus koraiensis, Ginkgo biloba and Liriodendron tulipifera, with the fumigation of $SO_2$ in gas chamber 4 hours a day for six days. MDA contents of leaves in Ginkgo biloba, Platanus occidentalis and Liriodendron tulipifera in polluted regions were higher than those in unpolluted region and among them Liriodendron tulipifera had the highest. MDA contents of Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis increased with the increase of needle age. MDA contents of Liriodendron tulipifera seedlings were increased with the higher concentrations of $SO_2$ but MDA contents in other seedlings showed no changes with $SO_2$ treatment concentrations. MDA contents in all species were increased with the passage of exposure day. Especially. Liriodendron tulipifera had higher MDA content than other species. In Liriodendron tulipifera the MDA production increased with the passage of exposure day until the fourth day after that decreased.

Ozone tolerance of tree species was determined by standard index of physiological damages and biochemical defense responses under short-term ozone exposure. At the end of 150ppb $O_3$ fumigation, photosynthetic characteristics and antioxidative enzyme activities were analyzed in the leaves of five species(Koelreuteria paniculata, Firmiana simplex, Styrax japonica, Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Viburnum sargentii). Injury index was determined by the effect of ozone on photosynthetic parameters and malondialdehyde(MDA) content, and tolerance index was calculated using the rate of increase in superoxide dismutase(SOD), ascorbate-peroxidase(APX), glutathione reductase(GR) and catalase(CAT) activities. Apparent quantum yield(AQY), carboxylation efficiency(Ce) and photo-respiration rate(PR) decreased in the leaves of five species with increasing ozone exposure time. These parameters were considered as an appropriate indicator for stress evaluation. Antioxidative enzyme activities showed various results depending on the tree species, exposure time, and enzyme types. SOD activity of K. paniculata increased with ozone exposure time, and that of F. rhynchophylla increased only after 6 hours of ozone exposure. CAT activity of $O_3$-exposed F. simplex was lower than the control. Based on standard index, ozone tolerance ability of five species was determined as two tolerant species(F. rhynchophylla > K. paniculata) and three sensitive species(S. japonica > F. simplex > V. sargentii).

This study was conducted to determine the toxic effects of air pollutants on landscaping tress, Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Ginkgo biloba, Liriodendron tulipifera, Platanus occidentalis and their resistance to the pollutant toxicity in urban and industrial regions of Seoul and Taejon, Korea. Total sulfur contents and enzyme activities such as superoxide dismutase and peroxidase were analyzed in tree foliage of Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Ginkgo biloba, Liriodendron tulipifera, Platanus occidentalis. In addition, POD activity was analyzed in the foliage on tree seedlings, i.e. Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Ginkgo biloba, Lirioderdron tulipifera, with the fumigation of $SO_2$ in gas chamber 4 hours a day for six days. In Ginkgo biloba total sulfur content and POD activity had a negative correlation while other species had a positive relationship in total sulfur content and enzyme activity. Air pollutants accumulated in tree tissues were supposed to enhance the enzyme activity like POD providing the resistance mechanisms. Especially Pinus koraiensis and Platanus occidentalis had higher POD activity than other species. The increase of temporary POD activity against environmental stress appeared in sensitive trees and prolonged increase of POD activity played an important role in resistance mechanism. SOD and POD activities in all species had a positive correlation except Ginkgo biloba. Changes of SOD and POD activities were different between species and in most species SOD as well as POD seemed to participate in resistance mechanism.

Pine wilt disease has known as a serious forest disease in East Asia such as Japan, Korea and China. Fumigation and burning are considered as best way to treat infected tree at early detection. For investigate spectral reflectance characteristics of infected trees, periodic measurement has been done in both infected and non-infected trees. Infected and non-infected trees' reflectance (400 nm~2,500 nm wavelength) are detected from June to October with GER3700 spectrometer. Noise of reflectance data was corrected using cubic spline interpolation method. Reflectance was changed in most of infected trees with ranges Red (600 nm~700 nm) and Middle Infrared (1,400 nm~1,500 nm) within two months after injected by Pine Wood nematode (PWN), but there was no differences in non-infected trees. Infected and non-infected trees were compared statistically in each period. As a result, we found that a statistically significant difference was occurred at Red and Middle Infrared (MIR) 2 months after injection (p<0.05), however, no significant difference in near infrared (p>0.05). Therefore, the early detection of infested pine trees by PWN may possible through detecting the change of spectral reflectance at red and MIR.

To examine the relationship between air pollution and occurrence of disease in plants, we investigated the alteration of physiology and biochemistry of Ginkgo biloba by inoculating with Coniothyrium sp. and fumigating with 0.1 ${\mu}l/l\;SO_{2-}$ Visual damage did not appear but photosynthesis, $CO_2$ use efficiency(CUE) and water use efficiency(WUE) were reduced when G. biloba was exposed to $SO_{2-}$for 7days (8 hours a day). When inoculated with Coniothyrium sp., the seventies of damage in G. biloba showed a threefold difference between $SO_{2-}$ treatment (SI) and $SO_{2-}$ free treatment (SFI) at day 42 from initial inoculation. Little difference was observed in sugar contents that may be used pathogens feed, among control, SFI and SI. In spite of the reduction in photosynthetic rate, sugar contents and CUE were maintained. WUE was enhanced 13% more at SI than SFI. The $CO_2$fixation boosted because of enhanced WUE, and thus sugar synthesis was not affected. In addition, sugar transport seems to be retarded for some internal alteration. Consequently, the severity of SI was more serious than that of SFI because Coniothyrium sp. easily invades into the physical texture of G. biloba weakened by $SO_2$ fumigation and because sugar was accumulated in leaves of G. biloba.

Studies were carried out to determine the effect of sulfur dioxide on leaf injury and yield of ten soybean cultivars. Plants were fumigated with 2.0 ppm of $SO_2$ for 4 or 8 h in a closed-top field chamber. In the comparison of foliar injury, Paldalkong and Eunhakong were more susceptible to $SO_2$ than Bogwangkong, Jangsukong, and Jangkeungkong. Correlations between chlorophyll contents, peroxidase activity, and stomatal resistance of leaves and foliar susceptibility were insignificant. However, significant correlations $(r=-0.611^{\ast})$ were found between superoxide dismutase activity and foliar injury rates. Dry weight, number of pods and total grains were significantly reduced by $SO_2$ fumigation but plant height, number of nods and weight of 100 grains were not affected. Yield reduction rates were higher in Eunhakong and Paldalkong than in Bogwangkong and Jangkeungkong. A liniar relationship was found between foliar injury rate and the percent crop loss with a significant coefficient of b=-1.17 in the susceptible cultivar of Paldalkong, but Bogwangkong, insusceptible cultivar, showed lower value of -0.165.

ABS1'RACT-Comparative effects of gamma irradiation and ethylene oxide treatment on the sterilization, and physicochemical and sensory quality of dried marine products(shrimp, anchovy) were investigated. Population of mesophilic total bacteria, aerobic spores and tolerant bacteria of samples were $10^{3}-10^{7}/g,\;10^{7}\;to \;10^{4}/g\;and\;10^{2}\;to\;10^{6}/g$, respectively. Coliforms and molds were found only in dried shrimp as $10^{2}/g$. Mesophilic total bacteria, aerobic spores and acid tolerant bacteria were reduced by over 2 to 4 log cycles with irradiation of 5 to 7 kGy and they were completely sterilized by irradiation dose of 7 to 10 kGy. $D_{10}$ value of mesophilic total bacteria of samples ranged from 1.53 to 2.73 kGy. Coliforms and molds were sterilized at 5 to 7 kGy irradiation but ethylene oxide treatment proved insufficient to eliminate the microorgainsms. An optimum dose of irradiation was less detrimental than ethylene oxide treatment to phpicochemical properties of the samples, such as the pH, TBA value, TMA-N, amino acids, minerals and color difference. Sensory quality after three months of storage showed that the overall acceptability of irradiated sample was higher than that of the non treated control as well as ethylene oxide treated samples.amples.

This test was performed to evaluate the bactericidal efficacy of Fumagari OPP$^{(R)}$, fumigation disinfectant, containing 20% ortho-phenylphenol against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium). In preliminary tests, both E. coli and S. typhimurium working culture suspension number (N value) was $4.0{\times}10^8$ CFU/mL. And all of the colony numbers on the carriers exposed the fumigant (n1, n2, n3) were higher than 0.5N1 (the number of bacterial test suspentions by pour plate method), 0.5N2 (the number of bacterial test suspentions by filter membrane method) and 0.5N1, respectively. In addition, the mean number of bacteria recovered on the control-carriers (T value) was $3.4{\times}10^6$ CFU/mL. In the bactericidal effect of the fumigant, the reduction number of S. typhimurium and E. coli (d value) was 5.26 and 5.64 logCFU/mL, respectively. According to the French standard for the fumigant, the d value for the effective bactericidal fumigant should be over than 5 logCFU/mL. With the results of this study, Fumagari OPP$^{(R)}$ has an effective bactericidal activity, then the fumigant can be applied to disinfect food materials and kitchen appliances contaminated with pathogenic bacteria.

This study was conducted to find out the resistance of rice varieties to ozone gas. Thirty eight rice varieties were exposed to 0.3 ppm $O_3$ gas for 3 hours. Damage symptom, percentage of destroyed leaf and chlorophyll contents were observed after $O_3$ fumigation. The results obtained are as follows. 1) Typical symptom of $O_3$ damage appeared to greyish subtle spots in Japonica type and redish brown subtle spots in Indica-Japonica hybrid type within rice leaf vein. 2) Resistant varieties to $O_3$ gas were Palgwangbyeo, Seokwangbyeo and Milyang 30, while sensitive ones were Gwanakbyeo, Jinjubyeo and Hankangchalbyeo. 3) Chlorophyll damage of rice leaves were higher in Nongbaeck, Dobongbyeo, Palgeum, Jinjubyeo than in Milyang 21, Podgwangbyeo, Josaeongtongil, Honamjosaeng, Hwanggeumbyeo. 4) The amount of chlorophyll damage showed highly significant positive correlation with that of leaf destruction.

This study was conducted to compare the physiological and biochemical responses of four Betula species in response to ozone, and to find out the relationship between ozone uptake rate and photosynthesis or antioxidant activity. One-year-old seedlings of four Betula sp, B. costata, B. davurica, B. platyphylla var, japonica, and B. ermani, exposed to 100 pub ozone concentration for 8h day$^{-1}$ for 5 weeks in fumigation chamber. Ozone uptake rate, photosynthesis, SOD and GR activity were measured in the leaves of four species once a week. Cumulative ozone uptake rate was largest in the loaves of B. costata(53.8 mmol m$^{-2}$ ), smallest in the leaves of B. davurica(35.5 mmol m$^{-2}$ ). Photosynthesis of four Betula sp. exposed to ozone reduced relative to control, but the photosynthetic responses with changing stomatal conductance were different among species. Ozone exposure increased SOD activities of four species at the early exposing period, but after a critical point SOD activity decreased gradually. GR activity of B. costata was similar to the change of SOD activity, but the others showed the different patterns from B. costata. In conclusion, decreasing both SOD and GR activity at the critical point, B. costata may be sensitive species in response to ozone. In contrast, the others may be resistant species, which gradually increase GR activity following ozone exposure. GR activity was not always in accord with the change of SOD activity against ozone uptake, and the different responses between species were supposed to be affected by the cumulative ozone uptake.
