The reduction rate of fuel consumption by showing the fuel injection data for driver was measured in this study. The fuel injection data are composed of injection period, real time fuel economy and average fuel economy. The fuel consumption was measured by processing the voltage signal of injector and driven distance by GPS sensor. The fuel consumption was reduced by driving more carefully, i.e driving more steady without sudden acceleration and deceleration watching these fuel injection data. The reduction rate was up to 37% and the rate increased as the driver is customed to this driving pattern.

This paper deals with energy-saving effort in the hydraulic power steering system. Commonly, the hydraulic power steering systems are used for passenger cars and the reduction of pumping loss under non-steering condition is important to improve fuel economy. Experiments and simulations are performed simultaneously to examine the main factors to reduce the pumping loss-pressure loss and flow rate of the power steering systems. Fuel economy effect of the optimal design of power steering system is verified by vehicle test - more than 1% fuel consuming reduction is attained.

A basic experimental study has been carried out to find out the design parameters of fuel 2-staging atomizers in order to reduce nitrogen oxides(NOx) rate emitted from the steam boilers used the liquid fuel. The heavy fuel oil(B-Coil) and fuel 2-staging Y-jet twin-fluid atomizers were adopted in this study. The results of this paper were obtained from the real as well as the model scale atomizers. In the case of model atomizers test, NOx reduction rate was strongly dependent on the staged fuel rate, but it was weakly dependent on the injection hole arrangement and air swirl conditions. The real scale atomizers was designed and manufactured on the base of these test results, and those was mounted and operated in the real boiler generates 185 ton steam per an hour. The reduction rate of the model and real plant was reached 10∼30% of base NOx by atomizers. but dust was sharply increased in the low O$_2$combustion region of the real plant.
In order to investigate a nitriding process of spent oxide fuel and the subsequent change in thermal properties after nitriding, simulated spent fuel powder was converted into a nitride pellet with simulated fission product elements through a carbothermic reduction process. Nitriding rate of simulated spent fuel was decreased with increasing of the amount of fission products. Contents of Ba and Sr in simulated spent fuel were decreased after the carbothermic reduction process. The thermal conductivity of the nitride pellet was decreased by an addition of fission product element but was higher than that of the oxide fuel containing fission product elements.

This paper describes performance enhancement of a fuel cell's blower by controlling flow path. Different duct diameter at the inlet and outlet of the blower is selected for reducing blower noise level and input power. Hole diameter and the number of hole at the check valve are tested to reduce the input power of the blower. Two types of blower, fuel pressurized blower and cathode blower, are considered in the present study. Throughout experimental measurements of the test blowers, it is found that duct diameter is effective to reduce noise level and input power in the fuel cell blower. Noise reduction due to the optimal duct diameter at the outlet is more effective when flow rate is relatively large. That is, cathode blower has larger noise reduction compared to fuel pressurized blower because of larger flower rate. Input power of the blower can be reduced by controlling the hole diameter and the number of hole at the check valve.
Flue gas recirculation (FGR) is widely adopted to control NO emission in combustion systems. Recirculated flue gas decreases flame temperature and reaction rate, resulting in the decrease in thermal NO production. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the recirculated flue gas in fuel stream, that is, the fuel induced recirculation (FIR), could enhance much improved reduction in NO per unit mass of recirculated gas, as compared to conventional FGR in air. In the present study, the effect of dilution methods in air and fuel sides on NO reduction has been investigated numerically by using $N_2$ and $CO_2$ as diluent gases to simulate flue gases. Counterflow diffusion flames were studied in conjunction with the laminar flamelet model of turbulent flames. Results showed that $CO_2$ dilution was more effective in NO reduction because of large temperature drop due to the larger specific heat of $CO_2$ compared to $N_2$. Fuel dilution was more effective in reducing NO emission than air dilution when the same recirculation ratio of dilution gas was used by the increase in the nozzle exit velocity, thereby the stretch rate, with dilution gas added to fuel side.

The purpose of the present investigation is to examine the effect of water addition on combustion efficieny. In this research, fuel and additive water are injected into a burner in the form of vapors through separate needle valves, the flame temperature and concentrations of soot, CO and unburned hydrocarbons were measured in a premixed flame. The results are obtained to be: In the fuel lean region, the reduction rate of CO, soot and HC by water injection increases slightly, but there is no change in the combustion efficiency. On the other hand, in the fuel rich region, the reduction rate of CO, Soot and HC by water injection increases more than that of the fuel lean region. Accordingly, combustion efficiency increases.
Environmental pollution is produced by consumption of fossil fuel, therefore alternative fuels is interested for development of new energy resources and reduction of exhaust emissions for air pollution prevention. Biofuels are produced from new vegetable oil and animal fat, may be used as fuel without change of engine structure in diesel engine. In this paper, the test results on specific fuel consumption, combustion characteristics of neat diesel oil and biodiesel blends(10 vol.% biodiesel and 20 vol.% biodiesel) were presented using four stroke, direct injection diesel engine, especially this biodiesel was produced from biodiesel fuel at our laboratory by ourselves. This study showed that specific fuel consumption is increased slightly, on the other hand cylinder pressure, rate of pressure rise, rate of heat release and soot were decreased slightly in the case of biodiesel blends than neat diesel oil.
An experimental study was conducted to evaluate characteristic variation of diluted engine oils in which contains diesel fuels and its tribological effects on engine components. In this study, diluted engine oils with $10\%,\;15\%,\;and\;20\%$ of initial fuel content rate have been used for measuring the viscosity reduction rate, blow-by gas increment rate, main gallery pressure reduction rate, and fuel content rate in engine oils. These parameters are strongly related to the tribological characteristics of key engine components. The kinematic viscosity of engine oils in which is contained by diesel fuels from $10\%\;to\;20\%$ in oils is decreasing to approximately $54\%$ of initial diluted fuel-oil volume ratios. The experimental results show that the distillated engine oil decrease the viscosity of engine oil and its oil film stiffness, and increase the wear rate of rubbing parts of engine components. Thus we recommend that the containing volume rate of fuels in engine oils should be restricted to $3\~4\%$ for a sophisticated Diesel engine and $5\~7\%$ for a standard one.

Hematite reduction using hydrogen was conducted and the various process parameters were closely observed. A lab scale fluidized bed unit was designed especially for this study. The optimal values of the gas velocity, reduction time and temperature were evaluated. The values which indicated the highest reduction rate were set as fixed parameters for the following tests starting with the reduction time of 30 minutes and 750 ℃ of temperature. Among these variables the one with the highest interest was the gas specific consumption. It will tell the amount of the gas which is required to achieve a reduction rate of over 90% at the optimal conditions. This parameter is important for the scale up of the lab scale unit. 1,500 Nm3/ton-ore was found to be the optimal specific gas consumption rate at which the reduction rates exhibit the highest values for hematite.
