  • We performed an experimental research on lubricant oil in dual fuel medium-speed engines. It is important to select the appropriate lubricant oil because it could significantly affect engine lifetime and performance. We generally recommend the selection of the lubricant oil according to the fuel grades as contents in the project guide. However, it is a considerable challenge for shipyards to implement this concept because of the lack of space to install the complicated lubricating oil system for dual fuel engines. Therefore, we determine the adaptability of one-common lubricant oil for HiMSEN dual fuel engine through this experimental research. To check abnormality in gas mode operation and durability of engine components when a lubricating oil with high BN (base number) is used, overhaul inspections and lubricant oil analysis are carried out two times, and four times, respectively, during an operation of approximately 300 h. We investigated the variations in kinematic viscosity, base number, element quantity, pentane insoluble and sulfated ash in lubricant oil analysis. Moreover, we also investigated whether the deposit formation or wear occurred in various bearings, injectors, exhaust valves, intake valves, piston rings and so on through the overhaul inspections. There are no problems in the lubricant analysis and the overhaul inspections. Through the experimental research, we confirm that one-common lubricant oil should be selected according to the higher sulfur content of fuel oil in dual fuel engines.

  • This paper presents the results of field demonstration for fuel switching to bio-fuel oil in 4 commercial heavy oil fired power plants. The 100% fuel switching field demonstration was successfully carried out in two tangential-firing boilers at a capacity of 75 and 100 MWe respectively without major equipment retrofit, and also 25% bio-fuel oil blending for two opposite firing boilers at a capacity of 350 and 400 MWe respectively. Despite the low density and heating value, the bio fuel was successfully replaced heavy fuel oil at the full load by only adjusting operational parameters. Incase of bio fuel oil combustion, heat absorption of radiative heat transfer section was reduced while convection section has opposite trend. In pollutants emission, a major reductionin SOx as well as 10-20% reduction in NOx were achieved by the fuels witching. On the other hand, boiler efficiency was slightly underestimated.

  • Esterified bio-diesel oil is normally used as blend oil of 3% that and 97% diesel fuel in Korea. Since specifics of it is similar to that of diesel fuel, availability of non-esterified bio-diesel oil that has a lower expenses of manufacturing is worthy of attention. However, bio-diesel oil has a demerit which it emits typically more NOx emission than diesel fuel. In this study, characteristic tests using blending oil with 95% gas oil and 5% bio-diesel oil were achieved at lower common rail pressure in order to improve this demerit. It was noticed that non-esterified bio-diesel oil has more similar characteristics to diesel fuel than esterified bio-diesel oil and it emits more NO emission by fuel NO mechanism.

  • A demand for bio-diesel oil increases as one of solution for exhaustion of fossil fuel and reduction of $CO_2$ emission, and research on bio-diesel is being carried out. Bio-diesel oil is mainly esterified from vegetable oil with methanol in order to use for fuel on diesel engine and has demerit that costs are increased as compared with directly using like non-esterified one. Bio-diesel oil within 3% mixed with gas oil is used at present, proportion of bio-diesel oil will be increase by 5% in future. We judged that wasted soybean oil non-esterified could be used on diesel engine with an electronic fuel injection according to previous researches with a mechanical fuel injection. A performance test using only gas oil, gas oil with esterified bio-diesel oil 5% and wasted soybean oil non-esterified 5% on diesel engine with the electronic fuel injection were carried out. It is noticed that gas oil with wasted soybean oil non-esterified 5% has more similar characteristics to gas oil than gas oil with esterified bio-diesel oil 5%.

  • It has recently been reported that methanol fuel has been used in the product carrier with established duel fuel engine, which has been greatly reducing emissions of $CO_2$, NOx and SOx from the engine. However, to use methanol alone as fuel oil in a general diesel engine, design modification of cylinder head is needed because the ignition aid device or the duel fuel injection system is needed. On the other hand, only if the mixer is installed on the fuel oil supply line, diesel oil - methanol blending oil can be used as fuel oil for the diesel engine, but there is a problem of the phase separation when two fuels are mixed. In this study, diesel oil and methanol were blended compulsorily in preventing the phase separation with installing agitators and a fuel oil boost pump on fuel line of a test engine. Also, cylinder pressure and fuel consumption quantity were measured according to engine load and methanol blending ratio, and indicated mean effective pressure, heat release rate and combustion temperature obtained from the single zone combustion model were analyzed to investigate the effects of latent heat of vaporization of methanol on combustion stability and characteristics. As a result, the combustion stability and characteristics of 10% methanol blending oil are closest to the those of diesel oil, and it could be used as fuel oil in existing diesel engines without deterioration of engine performance and combustion characteristics.

  • The dilution of crankcase oil with unburned portions of the fuel during operating is one source of the oil contaminations which will reduce engine life.It has been learned that major causes of oil dilution may be the result of using impure fuels which were mixed with water, dust, and some others, but very little was known about this. This study was conducted to develop a more intimate understanding about oil dilution of the farm kerosene engine while using impure fuel mixed with expecially diesel. Fuels being used in this study were 9 kinds of mixed fuels, kerosene and diesel. Farm kerosenen engine of 10 P.S. was tested at no-load of 1000 and 2000 rpm., such as 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, and 11/10 loads for understanding about oil dilution of keresene engine. The result of this study are summarized as follows : 1. The amounts of oil dilution of the engine being tested was increased with increase in the applied loads and the contents of diesel in the mixed fuels when using fuels other than kerosenen and diesel, whereas at $D_100$ fuel the comount of oil dilution decreased in some cases. The lowest value was measured to be 20 cc/hr, at $K_90$ fuel of no-load condition, and the highest value to be 293cc/hr. at $K_{10}$ fuel of 4/4 load condition. 2. When the engine was operated at no-load condition, the amount of oil dilution at 100rpm. was much more than at 2000 rpm. 3. Because the fuel consumption and the oil dilution showed a similar tendency along the applied loads, the excessive fuel consumption of engines was supposed to be one of the important factors affecting oil dilution. 4. The temperature of crankcse oil was varied invesely with oil dilution, but they were not thought to be factors to determine each other variable. 5. The tested engine could be operated with high percentage of diesel mixed fuel from no-load condition to fully loaded condition, but it would be impossible to operate the engine for long hous continuously due to excessive speed fluctuation.

  • To know the possibility of fuel substitution for Diesel engine with the seed oil of Evodia daniellii, which is one of the native oil seed trees in Korea. the refined seed oil mixed with light oil in the various rates was tested in the 8 PS Diesel engine: the output, the fuel consumption rate, the governor performance, the rpm stability in the total loading condition. the content of graphite in the burned gas, and the traction coefficients at the different gear stages were maintained The following results were discussed. 1. The output at the normal revolution (2200rpm)was increased as the percent seed oil increased. At the lower rpm (2000-1500rpm )there were no consistent difference in the outputs among fuels of the different percent seed oil 2. The rate of fuel consumption was inclosed as the percent seed oil increased in each loading condition. 3. The more percent sud oil was mixed in the fuel. the better governor performance appeared at both the instantaneous and stable speed. 4. The more percent seed oil was mixed In the fuel, the more stable rpm ratio was maintained 5. The graphite content In the burned gas was increased as the load increased, but there was no apparent difference in the content at each load among the 100$\%$ seed oil, the 100$\%$ light oil, and the mixtures in various rates. 6. In all fuel mixtures the maximam traction coefficent appeared at the third transmission gear stage. Generally in over all transmission gear stages the fuel mixtures of the seed oil:light oil ratio from 7:3 to 5:5 resulted greater traction force than the other fuels.

  • Combustion characteristics of boiler fuels made of bio-oil and light-oil were experimentally investigated. Bio-oil was obtained by fast pyrolysis of woody biomass. Emulsion fuel made by mixing bio-oil (up to 30wt%) with light-oil and surfactant was completely burnt, resulting in the formation of combusted gas containing CO concentration less than 10ppm. Simple mixtures of bio-oil and light-oil with separate delivery lines also gave nice combustion characteristics.
