  • In this study, thermochemical degradation by acetone solvolysis reaction of siberian spruce wood was investigated for a temperature range of $200{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. The liquid products by acetone solvolysis from siberian spruce wood produced various kinds of aliphatics, cyclic compounds and aromatics included phenols etc. Combustion heating value of liquid products by acetone solvolysis conversion processes was in the range of $8,010{\sim}8,180cal/g$. The energy yield in acetone solvolysis of siberian spruce wood was as high as 74.2% after 40min of reaction at $400^{\circ}C$. The liquid products from the thermochemical conversion of siberian spruce wood could be used as high-octane-value fuels and fuel additives.

  • In 600 MWe CANDU-PHW reactors PMCR will be used on-site for calibration of the regional overpower system. PMCR will be executed off-line in one of the station computers. The program calculates accurate channel power maps by incorporating a fuel turnup dependent flux to power conversion algorithm. Fuel turnup is calculated by PMCR, hence it is independent of other software. Extensive comparisons with the uniform flux/power conversion approximations were made. Significant improvements in power mapping accuracy are achieved with PMCR.

  • In this study, sulfonated PAES block copolymers have been synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reaction. Hydrophobic oligomer was prepared using 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene and bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulfone, whereas hydrophilic oligomer was prepared using sulfonated bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulfone and bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone. The chemical structure of polymers was analyzed by $^1H$ NMR, FT-IR and GPC. The thermal properties of polymers were measured by TGA and DSC. The oxidative stability of membranes was investigated by Fenton's test. Furthermore, the proton conductivity of membrane was found to be 26 mS/cm at $90^{\circ}C$. All physiochemical properties suggest that fabricated membrane have a great potential for applications in PEMFC.

  • The steam reformer for hydrogen production from methane is studied by a numerical method. Langmuir- Hinshelwood model is incorporated for catalytic surface reactions, and the pseudo-homogeneous model is used to take into account local equilibrium phenomena between a catalyst and bulk gas. Dominant chemical reactions are Steam Reforming (SR) reaction, Water-Gas Shift (WGS) reaction, and Direct Steam Reforming (DSR) reaction. The numerical results are validated with experimental results at the same operating conditions. Using the validated code, parametric study has been numerically performed in view of the steam reformer performance. As increasing a wall temperature, the fuel conversion increases due to the high heat transfer rate. When Steam to Carbon Ratio (SCR) increases, the concentration of carbon monoxide decreases since WGS reaction becomes more active. When increasing Gas Hourly Space Velocity (GHSV), the fuel conversion decreases due to the heat transfer limitation and the low residence time. The reactor shape effects are also investigated. The length and radius of cylindrical reactors are changed at the same catalyst volume. The longer steam reformer is, the better steam reformer performs. However, system energy efficiency decreases due to the large pressure drop.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate characteristics of an autothermal reformer at various operating conditions. Numerical method has been used, and simulation model has been developed for the analysis. Pseudo-homogeneous model is incorporated because the reactor is filled with catalysts of a packed-bed type. Dominant chemical reactions are Full Combustion reaction, Steam Reforming(SR) reaction, Water-Gas Shift(WGS) reaction, and Direct Steam Reforming(DSR) reaction. Simulation results are compared with experimental results for code validation. Operating parameters of the autothermal reformer are inlet temperature, Oxygen to Carbon Ratio(OCR), Steam to Carbon Ratio(SCR), and Gas Hourly Space Velocity(GHSV). Temperature at the reactor center, fuel conversion, species at the reformer outlet, and reforming efficiency are shown as simulation results. SR reaction rate is improved by increased inlet temperature. Reforming efficiency and fuel conversion reached the maximum at 0.7 of OCR. SR reaction and WGS reaction are activated as SCR increases. When GHSV is increased, reforming efficiency increases but pressure drop from the increased GHSV may decrease the system efficiency.

  • Continuous solid circulation test at high temperature and high pressure conditions and batch type reduction-oxidation tests were performed to check feasibility of a 0.5 MWth chemical looping combustion system. Pressure drop profiles were maintained stable during continuous solid circulation up to 16 hours. Therefore, we could conclude that the solid circulation between an air reactor and a fuel reactor could be smooth and stable. The measured fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity were high enough even at high capacity and even after cyclic tests. Therefore, we could expect high reactivity of oxygen carrier at real operation condition.

  • In this study, the mesoporous $SiO_2$ (5, 10, or 15 wt%) was incorporated into the polybenzimidazole matrix in order to improve the proton conduction as well as physiochemical properties of composite membrane. The chemical structure of mesoporous $SiO_2$ and crystallinity of as-prepared membranes were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, respectively. The thermal stability of the pristine $X_1Y_9$ and composite membranes were evaluated by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). On other side, the physical and chemical properties of the pristine $X_1Y_9$ and composite membranes were also determined by acid uptake and oxidative stability tests, respectively. With the incorporation of 15 wt% $SiO_2$, the composite membrane exhibits the higher proton conductivity that may be applicable for non-humidified high temperature fuel cell applications.

  • Batch type reduction-oxidation tests were performed to check effects of temperature, pressure, gas velocity, and capacity on reduction characteristics of mass produced particle in a 0.5 MWth chemical looping combustion system. The fuel conversion and the CO2 selectivity increased as the temperature increased and as the gas velocity decreased. However the CO2 selectivity showed the maximum and decreased as the capacity increased because the CO emission increased. The results show that high temperature, low gas velocity and low inert gas concentration are preferable to ensure high reactivity of oxygen carrier in the fuel reactor.
