A total number of 916 fruiting bodies of Ganoderma lucidum (Fr.) Karsten grown naturally in Korea were collected to investigate the morphological characters and some other useful characters related to the quality of the fungus and the results obtained are summarized as follows; The host tree showing the highest parasitic rate by the Genoderma lucidum(Fr.) Karsten was oak tree and the parasitic rate of the tree was 86.2%. The order of parasitic rate of the host trees by the fungus next to the oak was peach, chestnut, persimmon and acasia. The size, shape and color of fruiting bodies were varied according to the host trees. The average size of fruiting bodies collected was 40 to 100 mm by 30 to 80mm. The fruiting bodies with pileus size of 60 by 45 mm, pileus thickness of over 10mm, pileus minor axis/stipe length ratio of over 0.65 and pileus thickness/pileus minor axis ratio of over 0.22 were considered having higher commerical values. The external shape of the fruiting body was very important criterion to evaluate the quality of the Ganoderma lucidum (Fr.) Karsten. A great variation in characters such as pileus shape, color, marginal shape, zonation of pileus, pileus thickness, poroid layer of fruiting bodies and shape of stipe were observed from the fruiting bodies of G. lucidum collected in Korea. Further studies will be necessary for the genetic nature of these characters.
We made the first Korean white commercial strain 'Baek-a' developed by crossing between monokaryons derived from brown strains. This variety can be estimated as the Korea's indigenous one different from the origin of Japanese white ones. The optimum temperature of mycelial growth was $25^{\circ}C$ but it needed to adjust to $18{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ when incubated at the bottle cultivation. The optimum temperatures of fruiting body initiation and development were $12{\sim}13^{\circ}C$ and $67^{\circ}C$, respectively. Fruiting body of 'Baek-a' was pure white even developed from crossing with brown strains. 'Baek-a' was a good variety with high quality and high productivity characterized as quite even budding habit, long stipes and hemi-spherical pilei. The days for the fruiting was 7 days and the productivity was $111{\pm}34$ g per 850 ml. This variety needed high concentration of carbon dioxide and it had to be adjusted up to 4,000 ppm for the good quality.
'Baekseung', a new variety of Flammulina velutipes, was bred by mating two monokaryotic strains isolated from KMCC 4210 and KMCC 4216 in the Mushroom Research Division, Baekseung ARES in 2016. The Baekseung and Uri1ho strains showed fast mycelial growth and mycelial density on malt extract agar media after 7 days of incubation. The spawn running period on the sawdust substrate required a cultivation period and temperature of 30 days and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively, for primordia formation where in fruiting body development occurred from $11{\pm}1days$ at $14^{\circ}C$ and $14{\pm}1days$ at $7^{\circ}C$. The length of the pilei and stipes of the Baekseung harvested in optimal stag were $11.3{\pm}0.4$ and $89.2{\pm}7.1mm$, respectively, whereas the values for Uri1ho were $10.7{\pm}1.0$ and $91.3{\pm}20.8mm$, respectively. The yield of the Baekseung and Uri1ho strain grown on the sawdust substrate was $153.7{\pm}12.5$ and $139.8{\pm}17.8g$, respectively, per 850 ml in bottle cultivation. The inferred tree exhibited a phylogenetic relationship between the Korean white fruiting body strains of Baekseung, Uri1ho and Fv-14-a-38, Fv-14-a-51, and the Japanese white fruiting body-forming strains of KMCC 4226, and these were confirmed to be genetically related.
Xylaria, belonging to the Ascomycotina, is known to produce diverse classes of bioactive substances. In an effort to identify the chemical constituents of the fruiting bodies of Xylaria polymorpha, linoleic acid (1), linoleic acid methyl ester (2), ergosterol (3), 4-acetyl-3,4-dihydro-6,8-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-5-methyl-1H-2-benzopyran-1-one (4), and 4-hydroxyscytalone (5) were isolated from its methanolic extract. Their structures were assigned on the basis of various spectroscopic studies.
Various bacteria were isolated from the casing layer soil of the culture bed of P. ostreatus and their role in fruiting body induction of the edible mushroom, P. ostreatus, was investigated. Analysis of the bacterial community isolated from the casing layer soil revealed that the composition of genera and number of cultivable bacteria were different for each sterilizing treatment. Bordetella was predominant in the bulk soil whereas Flavobacterium was predominant after sterilization of the casing layer soil. Fluorescent Pseudomonas was predominant in the non-sterilized casing layer soil. Total number of the bacterial genera in the casing layer soil was higher than that in the bulk soil. In particular, an increase in the fluorescent Pseudomonas population was observed in the non-sterilized casing layer accompanied by induction of fruiting body and enhanced mushroom production yield. The results suggested that specific bacterial populations in the casing layer play an important role in the formation of primodia and the development of basidiome in P. ostreatus.

We undertook a breeding program to produce a white button mushroom cultivar with high temperature tolerance in preparation for climate change. The results were as follows. The strains KMCC00540, KMCC00591, and KMCC00643 were selected, and homokaryons were selected and hybrids were identified with ISSR and SSR markers, respectively. The selected hybrids were cultivated in three repetitions at a temperature of 20-25 ℃ and a humidity of 80% or higher. The variation in agricultural traits and fruiting body characteristics was least in the Abs4-2016-121 strain. This line is a hybrid of KMCC00591 and KMCC00875, and field experiments at Gyeongju and Buyeo farms found that the Abs4-2016-121 line has high fruiting body with hardness and delayed opening of pileus at high temperatures, so it was bred as a high-temperature cultivar named 'Hadam'.
A strain of Dictyophora echinovolvata ASI 32002 showing good fruiting body formation was selected. Analyses of chemical and nutritional components as well as antimicrobial activity of different parts of the mushroom such as mycelium, egg, and fruiting body were carried out. There were differences in the chemical compositions and the quantities depending on developmental stages of veiled lady mushroom, D. echinovolvata ASI 32002. Nitrogen, phosphate, magnesium, and calcium in inorganic chemicals were abundant in mycelium, and potassium and mineral elements were abundant in the egg and fruiting body. Mannitol and trehalose were abundant in free sugar contents. Glutamic acid and arginine in mycelium and aspartic acid and glutamic acid in egg and fruiting body were abundant in free amino acid contents. Linoleic acid, an polyunsaturated fatty acid, was abundant in all parts of the Dictyophora species, but compositions and quantities of other fatty acids varied depending on the different parts of the mushroom. It was detected that malic acid, lactic acid and acetic acid in mycelium, formic acid, acetic acid and fumaric acid in egg, and malic acid, citric acid, lactic acid, fumaric acid in fruiting body were abundant. The methanol extracts of D. echinovolvata ASI 32002 mycelium showed antifungal activity with minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) of $62{\sim}125\;{\mu}g/ml$ that was similar levels of cyclohexamide against Aspergillus awamori, Hypocrea nigricance and Trichoderma virens. The MIC of extracts from mycelium and fruiting body against Candida albicans was $250\;{\mu}g/ml$, similar to that of tetracycline. In addition to the above results, further as food additives and ingredient of cosmetics.
Myxococcus xanthus is a Gram negative, rod-shaped, soil bacterium that displays a social behaviors, and multicellular development upon nutrient deprivation. The csgA gene encoding a cell surface protein is essential for developmental behaviors including rippling, aggregation, fruiting body formation and sporulation. csgA mutants show normal vegetative growth, but lack all these developmental phenotypes. Expression of the CsgA (C-signal) specific genes are eliminated or dramatically reduced in csgA mutants. In order to identify components of C-signal transduction pathway, second site mutations were introduced into csgA mutants and were identified which can fully or partially restore development of csgA mutants (Rhie, H. G. et. al. 1989. J. Bacteriol. 171, 3268-3276). One of such csgA suppressor mutations, socD500 restores only sporulation to csgA mutants at 15$^{\circ}C$. The socD500 mutaion however eliminates the three basic developmental requirements, starvation, high cell density and a solid surface. Only sporulation, not accompanied with fruiting body formation is induced simply by shifting the temperature of vegetatively growing cells from $32^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$. Spores induced by socD500 mutation is not as thick as that of wild-type fruiting body. In socD500 genetic background, two of ten C-signal dependent genes, $\Omega$DK4506 and $\Omega$DK4406 are more highly expressed in growing cells at $15^{\circ}C$. These results indicate that the socD500 mutation may be partly involved in the regulation of expression of two C-signal dependent genes and genes for sporulation in this transduction pathway.
Effects of $CO_2$ concentration (500, 800, 1,000 and 1,500 ppm) on the initiation and development of fruit body of Grifola frondosa on sawdust cultivation were studied. Optimum concentrations of carbon dioxide for the initiation and development of the fruit body showed the ranges from 500 to 800 ppm. Fruit body initiation was accelerated at lower than 800 ppm $CO_2$ exposure but the maturing of the fruit body was not influenced by above treated $CO_2$ concentrations. The higher ratio of primordial formation, faster fruit body initiation and higher yield were obtained at below 800 ppm of $CO_2$ level, whereas over 1,000 ppm of $CO_2$ levels showed abnormal and lower quality of fruiting bodies. Based on the above results, it is concluded that the favorable $CO_2$ level for bag culture of G. frondosa was below 800 ppm.

We have previously isolated ${\varepsilon}$-COP, the ${\alpha}$-COP interactor in COPI of Aspergillus nidulans, by yeast two-hybrid screening. To understand the function of ${\varepsilon}$-COP, the $aneA^+$ gene for ${\varepsilon}$-COP/AneA was deleted by homologous recombination using a gene-specific disruption cassette. Deletion of the ${\varepsilon}$-COP gene showed no detectable changes in vegetative growth or asexual development, but resulted in decrease in the production of the fruiting body, cleistothecium, under conditions favorable for sexual development. Unlike in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in A. nidulans, over-expression of ${\varepsilon}$-COP did not rescue the thermo-sensitive growth defect of the ${\alpha}$-COP mutant at $42^{\circ}C$. Together, these data show that ${\varepsilon}$-COP is not essential for viability, but it plays a role in fruiting body formation in A. nidulans.
