  • It is said that the university mathematics education in Korea faces critical situations due to the decreases of both qualities and quantities of students. In this paper we examine college students in order to know their basic ability for understanding about fundamental functions, such as polynomial, trigonometric, logarithm and exponential functions which have learned from highschool mathematics courses. The subject are 354 freshmen of 4 universities located in Daejeon and Chongchung area. The result of this study shows as follows. i ) More than half students are not able to draw graphs of given functions, except polynomial. ii ) More students do not fully understand about function properties such as domain, codomain, range, max and min value, cycle and parallel translation.

  • The wide range of the Freshmen English placement test scores implies the necessity of differentiating classes. However without a careful and detailed plan, there could be trial and error which would cause harmful and complicated troubles to students. This paper will report a case of grouping Freshmen for English classes at the Engineering College of a provincial university. The main procedures include preparing and executing the placement test, grouping classes, preparing and executing a common final test, preparing grading policy, and reporting. Each procedure is going to be explained and evaluated to improve the quality of English classes and the ability of students at the Engineering College.

  • Many people are showing interest on computing and computer programming ever as much as the smartphone become more popular. Computer programming languages, however, like Java or C++ being used to teach freshmen in computer science-related majors as the first programming language they will study are so difficult to understand. In this paper, we proposed a short-term curriculum for teaching computer programming using App Inventor for Android to freshmen students major in computer science as the first programming language they will study, which can encourage their interest in computer programming. According to survey from students participated in actual teaching, we found that the proposed curriculum can contribute to increase their interest on computer programming and even self-confidence on development of applications for smarphone.

  • This study examined the perceptions of freshmen students on the use of a university library site. The students were in the beginning month of their undergraduate program in Hansung University without being taught a formal library instruction session. The results show users experienced uncertainty, difficultly, confusion and anxiety while they were interacting with various functions of the library site. The findings revealed that the users' perceptions were originated from: (1) the insufficiency of the students' knowledge and skills related to library use and (2) the inadequacy of the library system features, in particular its interface features. Based on the findings, implications to improve library instructional services and system interfaces are suggested.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the relationships between drinking-related knowledge, attitude and drinking behaviors of 244 female nursing college students in G city. Methods: This is descriptive research design. Data were collected from September 27th to October 10th, 2010 after obtaining the informed consent from the participants and analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, scheffe' test and pearson's correlation coefficients. Results: The drinking-related knowledge scores were significant differences by grade and club activities. The drinking-related attitude scores were significant differences by source of income. Drinking behaviors were significant differences by school record and club activities. Regarding the relationships between variables, there was a positive relationship between drinking behaviors and drinking-related knowledge or attitude. Conclusion: The drinking-related knowledge score of freshmen or the students involved in club activities was the lowest, and the higher the drinking-related knowledge and attitude were, the higher the drinking behaviors were. Therefore, appropriate drinking prevention education need to be implemented to freshmen or in middle and high school repeatedly.

  • Biplot is a modern graphical methodology allowing for the projection of high-dimensional data to a low-dimensional subspace that is rich in information on variation in the data, correlation among variables as well as class separation. For the construction of biplots, we use a BiplotGUI package in a free statistical software R with increasing popularity. Moreover, using data from questionnaires given to Chonbuk National University freshmen in 2009, the relationship between career goals and career maturity are studied by applying the biplot method.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship among university students' basic psychological needs, smartphone addiction and degree of adaptation to their university life, as well as to investigate the factors affecting their adaptation to university life. Methods: This study was conducted from May through July in 2017 for 235 university freshmen. Data were analyzed by frequency, t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The study showed that the group living in the dormitory or other places rather than living with family and satisfying in family life [ED highlight - please clarify this, I cannot infer your intended meaning; however, this text can likely be deleted.] adapted easily to university life. Moreover, adaptation to university life was negatively correlated with smartphone addiction, but positively correlated with basic psychological needs. Consequently, these results confirmed that residence type, satisfaction with family life, smartphone addiction and basic psychological needs were the factors having the greatest influence on university life. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to lead students to participate in programs that can meet basic psychological needs or prevent smartphone addiction to help university freshmen adapt to university life.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the influence of learning social integration and self-doubt on the suicidal ideation, and to test the mediating effect of self-doubt and the moderating effect of drinking on suicidal ideation. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered to a convenience sample of 1,000 freshmen in a university in S city. A total of 803 questionnaires were included in the statistical analysis. To analysed the data, Pearson correlation and structural equation modeling were performed. Results: In this study, self-doubt had a mediating effects in the path way from learning social integration to suicidal ideation. Drinking had a moderating effect between self-doubt and suicidal ideation. Conclusions: The results suggest that the low level of learning social integration increases the level of self-doubt and leads to suicidal ideation. Drinking was a significant moderator of suicidal ideation. Therefore, interventions on various strategies to enhance academic performance and social interaction skill, and to help to stop or not to initiate drinking habit are needed in the early part of the freshman year.
