  • In this study, the various performance of dry cement mortar for Korean floor heating system depending on water-to-dry mortar ratios (W/DM) applied in project site was evaluated. According to the experiment conducted, the importance of mixing water for dry cement mortar was revealed by resultant performance or quality of the dry cement mortar for floor finishing by changing W/DM controlled in project site by workers. As the general trend, the flow was increased, and the unit volume weight was decreased with increasing W/DM. Additionally, compressive strength and drying shrinkage were significantly influenced by W/DM. Hence, it can be stated that the adding water for dry cement mortar should be managed precisely since excessively increased W/DM for workability improvement can cause performance degradation of floor mortar with the failures such as excessive bleeding, and severe segregation during the fresh state. As a summary of the study, to achieve a desirable performance of dry cement mortar, approximately 20 % of W/DM can be suggested to be managed in project site.

  • The 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) is the gaseous ethylene action inhibitor, which delay senescence and wilting by blocking the binding of its receptors. We investigated the effects of 1-MCP with different treated duration (0h (Control), 1h, and 4h) in cut flowers of Eustoma grandiflorum 'Voyage' and Cymbidium 'Lapine Hat'. The relative water uptake increased by 14.5% than control (9.8%) and the flower diameter maintained high from 3 to 11 days in 1-MCP treatment for 4h in E. grandiflorum 'Voyage'. The relative fresh weight was averagely high in 1-MCP treatment for 4h, however, the vase life was not significantly different in both cut flowers. Since the effects of 1-MCP treatment was differently responded by plant species and cultivars, interacted studies of duration and levels of 1-MCP are needed for the pronounced effects of postharvest quality.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the effect of changes in the light environment caused by the daylight disturbance on the productivity and quality of the standard cut flower rose cultivar 'Monet'. It was artificially shaded to obstruct the sunlight and the productivity and growing characteristics of roses according to the time of daylight disturbance were investigated. The number of cut flowers per unit area (3.3m2) of the cut flower rose 'Monet' was 40 stems in the control, while in the 4-hour, 8-hour, and 12-hour treatments, it was 32, 29, and 25, respectively. As the daylight disturbance time was increased, the number of cut flowers showed a tendency to decrease. In the case of cut flower characteristics related to the quality of cut roses, all characteristics such as flower width, flower height, petal length, and petal width, decreased by 10 to 20% in the 12-hour treatment compared to the control. In addition, growth characteristics such as peduncle length, peduncle thickness, and cut flower height, which determine the marketability of cut roses, also tended to decrease as the daylight disturbance time increased. On the other hand, the number of days to flowering increased by 14.0% from 24.3 to 27.7. The overall growth characteristics were contracted and flowering was delayed as the time of daylight disturbance increased. In the results of this study, as the daylight disturbance time increased, flower size, cut flower length, and fresh weight was decreased. This is due to the decrease in the total photosynthetic amount as the daily average photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) was decreased, resulting in a decrease in the quality of roses. It is judged that it is because they do not receive enough carbohydrates necessary for growth and development.

  • Whole-plant corn (Zea may L.) and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] are major summer crops that can be fed as direct-cut or silage. Proso millet is a short-season growing crop with distinct agronomic characteristics that can be productive in marginal lands. However, information is limited about the potential production, feed value, and ensilability of proso millet forage. We evaluated proso millet as a silage crop in comparison with conventional silage crops. Proso millet was sown on June 8 and harvested on September 5 at soft-dough stage. Corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid were planted on May 10 and harvested on September 10 at the half milk-line and soft-dough stages, respectively. The fermentation was evaluated at 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, and 45 days after ensiling. Although forage yield of proso millet was lower than corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, its relative feed value was greater than sorghum-sudangrass hybrid. Concentrations of dry matter (DM), crude protein, and water-soluble carbohydrate decreased commonly in the ensiling forage crops. The DM loss was greater in proso millet than those in corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid. The in vitro dry matter digestibility declined in the forage crops as fermentation progressed. In the early stages of fermentation, pH dropped rapidly, which was stabilized in the later stages. Compared to corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, the concentration of ammonia-nitrogen was greater in proso millet. The count of lactic acid bacteria reached the maximum level on day 10, with the values of 6.96, 7.77, and 6.95 Log10 CFU/g fresh weight for proso millet, corn, and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, respectively. As ensiling progressed, the concentrations of lactic acid and acetic acid of the three crops increased and lactic acid proportion became higher in the order of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, corn, and proso millet. Overall, the shorter, fast-growing proso millet comparing with corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid makes this forage crop an alternative option, particularly in areas where agricultural inputs are limited. However, additional research is needed to evaluate the efficacy of viable strategies such as chemical additives or microbial inoculants to minimize ammonia-nitrogen formation and DM loss during ensiling.

  • Melons, a rich source of vitamins and fibers, are commonly grown in the soil. Hydroponic cultivation could improve yield and quality of melon and selection of substrate volume and the kind of substrates is important for hydroponic cultivation of melons. This study investigated the effect on melon growth according to volume of granular rockwool and substrates of coir and rockwool slab. 'Geumsegye' melon (Cucumis melo L. cv. Geumsegye) was cultivated hydroponically according to volume of granular rockwool to 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 L, and was also cultivated using coir and rockwool slabs. Logistic model was applied to estimate the growth characteristics of melons such as plant height, leaf length, leaf width, and the characteristics of fruit. The growth characteristics of melons were significantly increased at 4.0 L compared to those grown of 1.0 L volume of on granular rockwool, and the results were the highest in coir and rockwool slabs. Melons grown in rockwool slabs showed the largest fruit fresh weight, fruit length, and fruit width. During hydroponic cultivation, growth characteristics of melon appropriate at the 4.0 L volume of granular rockwool, and the highest at coir and rockwool slabs. This study provides a basis for understanding the effect of root zone environment to the growth characteristics and fruit quality of non-netted melon.

  • To maximize the medicinal properties of bellflower root (Platycodi radix), its growth and development according to soil texture were investigated using four types of soil: masato (decomposed granite), soil mix, loamy sand, and sandy loam. Saponin content was measured. With regard to bellflower root growth depending on soil texture, its growth was better in the order of loamy sand > sandy loam > soil mix > masato in the above-ground part, and loamy sand > soil mix > sandy loam > masato in the underground part in the order. The average content of general ingredients were 77.3% water, 2.6% crude fat, 3.2% crude flour, 6.0% crude protein, and 10.9% carbohydrates. With respect to saponin analysis of bellflower roots, the saponin content regarding platycodin D, platycodin D3, polygalacin D, and deapioplatycodin D were higher in the order of 282.4, 104.7, 29.1, 19.1 mg/100 g, respectively. The content of organic matter and phosphoric acid was high in soil mix and sandy loam, and platycodin D3 showed similar levels in all soil types. As a result, the soil mix is considered most suitable in terms of yield and component levels, however, it is the most expensive type. As a replacement, sandy loam was adequate in terms of fresh weight related to yield and highest saponin content.

  • Recently, the demand for the cultivation of upland soil has been increasing, and the rate of conversion of paddy soil into upland soil is also increasing. Theincrease in uneven precipitation due to climate change has resulted in dramatic effects of waterlogging stress on upland crops. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the changes in growth characteristics and the expression patterns of proteins at the two-leaf stage of adzuki beans. The domestic cultivar, Arari (Miryang No. 8), was used to test waterlogging stress. At the two-leaf stage of adzuki beans, plant height slightly decreased androot fresh weight showed significant changes after 3 days of waterlogging treatment. Chlorophyll content was also significantly different after 3 days of waterlogging treatment compared to its content in control plants. Using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, more than 400 protein spots were identified. Twenty-one differentially expressed proteins from the two-leaf stage were analyzed using linear trap quadrupole-Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. Of these 21 proteins, 9 were up-regulated and 12 were down-regulated under waterlogging treatment. Protein information resource (https://pir.georgetown.edu/) categories were assigned to all 49 proteins according to their molecular function, cellular component localization, and biological processes. Most of the proteins were found to be involved in the biological process, carbohydrate metabolism and were localized in chloroplasts.

  • To find out the optimum seeding rate in corrugated water seeded rice, field experiment was carried out at Yeongdeog Substation of the National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station for two years, 1994 and 1995. A rice cultivar Donghaebyeo, was seeded on May 15 with five seeding rate from 3kg /10a to 7kg /10a. The number of seedling stand per unit area was curvilinearly increased with seeding rate. In characteristics of rice plant associated with lodging, the plant height, fresh weight per tiller, Culm wall thickness and ratio of gravity center were not significantly different among seeding rates, but the breaking strength of 4th internode was slightly decreased with increasing seeding rate and thus, lodging index was generally greater at higher seeding rate than lower seeding rate. Field lodging was observed at 1~3 degree in seeding rate of 5~7kg /10a. Panicle number per unit area was generally increase with increase of seeding rate, while ratio of ripened grain was decreased with increase of spikelet number. Milled rice yield was curvilinearly increased with seeding rate. The optimum seeding rate in the highest rice yield was 4.8kg /10a in 1994, and 4.3kg /a in 1995, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to determine the growth and properties of green soybean sprouts(Vigna umbellata Thunb.) in soil culture. Patkong which is a small grain variety was sawn on electric heated hot bed in the greenhouse. Temperature of the culture bed were respectively 17, 20, 25, and 30℃ and water temperature were respectively 14, 17, 20 and 25℃. The kinds of soil used for this study were upland soil, sand, peatmoss and Pearlite, loess, loess and activated carbon. BA was treated in the concentrations of 240 times, 80 times, 40 times besides control. High temperature of 25 and 30℃ increased sprout yield compared to lower temperature but caused to decay from 7 days after sawing. Thus, the most optimum temperature for soil culture was 20℃. The best soil was sand of which increased fresh weight of 850g during same period. Addition of BA was most effective to promote sprout growth in the concentration of 80 times. Compared to general soybean sprouts, green soybean sprouts were 50% higher in fiber but 72% lower in glucide. Vitamin B was 200% higher in green soybean sprouts but vitamin C was higher in general soybean sprouts.

  • The Gymnocalycium mihanovichii has been an important export item of Korean flower industry for a long time. Although there is a high demand for grafted cactus from overseas, its production for export is limited. In this study, the growth and marketable yield characteristics of Gymnocalycium mihanovichii 'I-Hong' were compared between soil culture and ebb-and-flow hydroponic system with single- or double-tier bench. As a result, hydroponic methods with single-tier bench resulted in higher fresh weight and glove diameter compared to other cultivation methods. In the ebb-and-flow hydroponic system, hydroponic system with double-tier bench of grafted cactus traits has a lower growth rate than other cultivations. However, the hydroponic system with double-tier bench of grafted cactus significantly increased the yield. In conclusion, the yield from hydroponic system with double-tier bench was better than soil cultivation method. Although there were some differences in color depending on the cultivation method, it was considered that there was no difference in appearance of Gymnocalycium mihanovichii 'I-Hong'. Our results suggest the cultivation methods to overcome production constraints, expand their exports, and improve the value-added characteristics of grafted cactus.
