Asymmetry of rotor systems is an important factor for identification of dynamic characteristics including the stability and response of rotors and for condition monitoring. In this work, asymmetry of rotors is identified by applying curve-fitting method to the directional frequency response functions (dFRFs), which are known as a powerful tool for detecting the presence and degree of asymmetry. This method minimizes least square error between analytical and measured dFRFs by iteratively updating physical parameters associated with rotor asymmetry. The effectiveness of the identification method is demonstrated by experiments with a laboratory test rotor.
A relatively low frequency Lamb wave-based damage identification method called damage imaging method for rectangular composite plate is presented. A damage index (DI) is generated from the delay matrix of the Lamb wave response signals, and it is used to indicate the location and approximate area of the damage. The viability of this method is demonstrated by analyzing the numerical and experimental Lamb wave response signals from rectangular composite plates. The technique only requires the response signals from the plate after damage, and it is capable of performing near real time damage identification. This study sheds some light on the application of Lamb wave-based damage detection algorithm for plate-type structures by using the relatively low frequency (e.g., in the neighborhood of 100 kHz, more suitable for the best capability of the existing fiber optic sensor interrogator system with the sampling frequency of 500 kHz) Lamb wave response and a reference-free damage detection technique.
The spectrum of impulse response signal from an impulse hammer testing is widely used to obtain frequency response function (FRF) of the structure. However the FRFs obtained from impact hammer testing have not only leakage errors but also finite record length errors when the record length for the signal processing is not sufficiently long. The errors cannot be removed with the conventional signal analyzer which treats the signals as if they are always steady and periodic. Since the response signals generated by the impact hammer are transient and have damping, they are undoubtedly non-periodic. It is inevitable that the signals be acquired for limited recording time, which causes the finite record length error and the leakage error. In this paper, the errors in the frequency response function of multi degree of freedom system are formulated theoretically. And the method to remove these errors is also suggested. This method is based on the optimization technique. A numerical example of 3-dof model shows the validity of the proposed method.
A time domain method is presented for soil-structure interaction analysis under seismic excitations. It is based on the finite element formulation incorporating infinite elements for the far field soil region. Equivalent earthquake input forces are calculated based on the free field responses along the interface between the near and far field soil regions utilizing the fixed exterior boundary method in the frequency domain. Then, the input forces are transformed into the time domain by using inverse Fourier transform. The dynamic stiffness matrices of the far field soil region formulated using the analytical frequency-dependent infinite elements in the frequency domain can be easily transformed into the corresponding matrices in the time domain. Hence, the response can be analytically computed in the time domain. A recursive procedure is proposed to compute the interaction forces along the interface and the responses of the soil-structure system in the time domain. Earthquake response analyses have been carried out on a multi-layered half-space and a tunnel embedded in a layered half-space with the assumption of the linearity of the near and far field soil region, and results are compared with those obtained by the conventional method in the frequency domain.
The purpose of this paper is to reduce the level of idling vibration on a steering wheel. In some cases, vibration on steering wheel is amplified due to the resonance between the first natural frequency of T-beam and engine idling speed. Using SDM(structural dynamic modification) technique, T-beam is redesigned to reduce its vibration. This paper used FRF(frequency response function) synthesis technique which is entirely dependent on experiment. But this method requires lots of test efforts to enhance its reliability of design. While combining this method with an analytic method. the experimental burden, the major drawback of FRP synthesis method, can be considerably relieved. Using ana1ytic sensitivity analysis, some effective modification regions are preliminarily chosen as candidate Positions where SDM can be applied to modify T-beam\`s dynamic characteristics.
Recently the authors tried to find damage position only using measured frequency response functions. According to their work, it seems that the algorithm is very practical since it needs only measured frequency responses while other methods require exact analytic model. But when applying the method to a real structure, it requires lots of experiment. The authors, in this time, propose a method to reduce its experimental load by detecting damage within a substructure. This method searches damages not within an entire structure but within substructures. In addition, damage severity was treated in this paper since it is worthy to know damage severity. Optimization technique is used to estimate damage level using measured responses and damage model. Two test examples, a plate and a jointed structure, are chosen to verify the suggesting method.
Frequency response functions are of great use in dynamic analysis of structural systems. The present paper proposes an efficient method for computation of the frequency rewponse functions of linear structural dynamic models with a sparse, non-proportional damping matrix. An exact condensation procedure is proposed which enables the present method to condense the matrices without resulting in any errors. Also, an iterative scheme is proposed to be able to avoid matrix inversion in computing frequency response matrix. The proposed method is illustrated through a numerical example.
This paper is concerned with the examination and evaluation concerning a tuning method of multivariable PID controllers based on partial model matching on frequency domain proposed by authors from practical view point. In this case, PID controller parameters are determined by minimizing the loss function defined by the difference between frequency response of ideal model transfer function and actual frequency response on several frequency points. The purpose of the paper is to examine and evaluate the performance of the method through actual experiments of MIMO liquid level experimental process control equipment.
In this study, the frequency domain method which utilizes the evaluation of changes in the structural mode shape is adopted to identify regions which contain localized damages. Frequency response function (FRF) values corresponding to the modal frequency, analogous to the mode shape coefficients, are used since change in natural frequency of the system is usually insignificant for localized damage. This method requires only few sensors to obtain the dynamic response of the structure at specific locations to determine the FRF via fast-Fourier transform (FFT). Numerical examples of an aluminum plate, which includes damages of varying severity, locations and combinations of multiple locations, are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the method. An experimental verification of the method is also done using an aluminum plate with two different degrees of damage, namely a half-through notch and a through notch. The inconsistency in attaining the FRF values for practical applications due to varying impact load may be overcome via statistical averaging, although large variations in the loading in terms of the contact duration should still be avoided. Nonetheless, this method needs special attention when the damages induce notable changes in the modal frequency, such as when the damages are of high severity or cover more extensive area or near the boundary where the support condition is modified. This is largely due to the significant decrease in the frequency term compared to the increase in the vibration amplitude. For practical reasons such as the use of limited number of sensors and to facilitate automation, extending the resolution of this method of identification may not be efficient. Hence, methods based on wave propagation can be employed as a complement on the isolated region to provide an accurate localization as well as to trace the geometry of the damage.
One of important factors in designing MEMS resonators for RF filters is obtaining a desired frequency response function (FRF) within a specific frequency range of interest. Because various array-type MEMS resonators have been recently introduced to improve the filter characteristics such as bandwidth, pass-band, and shape factor, the degrees of freedom (DOF) of finite elements for their FRF calculation dramatically increases and therefore raises computational difficulties. In this paper the Krylov subspace-based model order reduction using moment-matching with non-zero expansion points is represented as a numerical solution to perform the frequency response analyses of those array-type MEMS resonators in an efficient way. By matching moments at a frequency around the specific operation range of the array-type resonators, the required FRF can be efficiently calculated regardless of their operating frequency from significantly reduced systems. In addition, because of the characteristics of the moment-matching method, a minimal order of reduced system with a prearranged accuracy can be determined through an error indicator using successive reduced models, which is very useful to automate the order reduction process and FRF calculation for structural optimization iterations. We also found out that the presented method could obtain the FRF of a $6\times6$ array-type resonator within a seventieth of the computational time necessary for the direct method and in addition FRF calculation by the mode superposition method could not even be completed because of a data overflow with a half after calculation of 9,722 eigenmodes.
