In this study, an accelerated carbonation process was applied to stabilize hazardous heavy metals of industrial solid waste incineration (ISWI) bottom ash and fly ash, and to reduce $CO_2$ emissions. The most commonly used method to stabilize heavy metals is accelerated carbonation using a high water-to-solid ratio including oxidation and carbonation reactions as well as neutralization of the pH, dissolution, and precipitation and sorption. This process has been recognized as having a significant effect on the leaching of heavy metals in alkaline materials such as ISWI ash. The accelerated carbonation process with $CO_2$ absorption was investigated to confirm the leaching behavior of heavy metals contained in ISWI ash including fly and bottom ash. Only the temperature of the chamber at atmospheric pressure was varied and the $CO_2$ concentration was kept constant at 99% while the water-to-solid ratio (L/S) was set at 0.3 and $3.0dm^3/kg$. In the result, the concentration of leached heavy metals and pH value decreased with increasing carbonation reaction time whereas the bottom ash showed no effect. The mechanism of heavy metal-stabilization is supported by two findings during the carbonation reaction. First, the carbonation reaction is sufficient to decrease the pH and to form an insoluble heavy metal-material that contributes to a reduction of the leaching. Second, the adsorbent compound in the bottom ash controls the leaching of heavy metals; the calcite formed by the carbonation reaction has high affinity of heavy metals. In addition, approximately 5 kg/ton and 27 kg/ton $CO_2$ were sequestrated in ISWI bottom ash and fly ash after the carbonation reaction, respectively.
The purpose of this study was to examine a possibility that fly ash could be used as raw material for carbonation by conducting the experiment on magnetic separation and hydration of fly ash that contained a large amount of CaO composite. Wet magnetic separation experiment was performed to remove the component of magnetic substance that contained fly ash, which aimed at increasing the content of CaO in the non-magnetic domain. The selected fly ash was used for hydration experiment before the TG-DTA, XRF and XRD analyses were made to confirm the Ca component that could be carbonated. Then, the fly ash was turned to a hydrate that was favorable to dissociation of $Ca^{2+}$ ion. As a result, the magnetic separation enabled detecting the content of CaO component by up to 61 wt% in the non-magnetic domain. Since the hydrate was confirmed, it is believed that the fly ash can be used as raw material for carbonation.
The increase of industrial carbonic dioxide emissions has accelerated the carbonation of reinforced concrete structures, which drops off their durability. Although advanced countries have already taken safety control measures against the carbonation of RC structures, it is still difficult now to accurately predict the actual carbonation depth. Additionally, it requires much time and efforts. Recently, it is possible to get the data more rapidly through accelerated carbonation test with the $CO_2$ concentration of 100%. In this paper, the carbonation test results obtained by two test methods such as the normal carbonation test method and the accelerated carbonation test method, were compared to investigate the carbonation characteristics of fly ash concrete. The accelerated carbonation test on concrete specimens with the pre-curing age of 180 days was also carried out to examine the carbonation characteristics of fly ash concrete at long-term age. Consequently, fly ash concrete at early age was vulnerable to carbonation and however, its carbonation resistance at long-term ages was improved compared with OPC concrete.

The studies on chloride diffusion of concrete have been done so far by many researchers. However, there are few studies on the effects of other attacks, like carbonation, on chloride diffusion properties. In this study, the experiments are carried out focusing on this by varying cement type, water to cement ratio and replacement of fly ash of concrete. The results show that carbonation attacks do not affect greatly chloride diffusion properties of plain concrete, while the different tendencies are exhibited for fly ash concrete. Therefore, it is desirable to consider the effects of carbonation attacks on the chloride diffusion model to predict accurately the penetration of chloride ion fly ash is partially replaced for cement.

The purpose of this study is to suggest the fundamental data of durability which effects on the Carbonation of concrete by adding various admixture additives. Thus, We have experimented the accelerated test on the concrete blending which was admixed by blast furnace slag, fly-ash, silica fume , durability amelioration and it was cured 7weeks after twenty eight days water curing. The result of this experiment is that Carbonation speed increased extremely when water cement ratio went up, and by growing of replace cement ratio of admixture additives. The specimen which was added fly-ash, blast furnace slag, silica fume has the faster Carbonation speed than the specimen which was not added admixture additives. All of these specimen, fly-ash has the fastest progress speed.

An experimental study is carried out to investigate the characteristics of concrete containing high volume fly ash. The compressive and tensile strength of fly ash concrete is slightly lower than those of ordinary concrete between 7and 28 days, however, the long-term compressive strength is significantly higher at 180 days. In durability, the high volume fly ash concretes are generally higher resistance of freeze and thaw and lowe chloride penetration, however, the depth of carbonation is increased with increasing fly ash content.

The role of fly ash in concrete become impotent with finding the characteristics of fly ash in which it is used as cement replacement material. In this paper, corrosion test results obtained by two test methods such as the long-term exposure corrosion test and the accelerated corrosion test method, were compared to investigated the corrosion resistance between fly ash concrete and normal concrete. Corrosion initiation time was measured in two types of concrete, i.e., one mixed with fly ash(FA) and the other without admixture(OPC). The accelerated corrosion test was carried out by four case, i.e., two samples is a cyclic drying-wetting method combined without carbonation(case 1) and combined with carbonation(case 2), and the other two samples is a artificial seawater ponding test method combined without carbonation(case 3) and combined with carbonation(case 4). Whether corrosion occurs, it was measures using half-cell potential method. The ponding test combined without carbonation was most effective in accelerating corrosion time of steel bars. The results indicated that the corrosion of rebar embedded in concrete occurred according to the order of OPC, FA. The delay relative ratio of corrosion obtained by corrosion initiation time between FA and OPC is 1.04 to 1.27. Consequently, fly ash concrete as the age increases its corrosion resistance was improved compared with OPC concrete.

The concrete structures in marine environment has been used type V cement(sulfate-resisting Portland cement), but according to the study results reported recently, the question has been raised for effect of the resistance to salt attack of the concrete using type V cement. It is increased the demands on the use of mineral admixtures such as fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag instead of type V cement in order to improve the durability of concrete structures. Therefore, this study focused on the durability evaluation of concrete containing fly ash under marine environment, and the tests such as salt attack, carbonation, sulfate attack, and freezing-thawing were performed. Test results showed t]hat the resistance to salt attack, sulfate attack and freezing-thawing was improved, and the carbonation was in some disadvantage compared with normal concrete. Nevertheless, the durability of fly ash concrete would be maintained during the service life of structures.

Recently, a large number of researches about concrete containing high volume fly-ash(HVFA) have been carried to obtain carbon dioxide reduction, resource recycle and durable option in concrete industry. The quality of fly-ash such as chemical composition and fineness has high variability due to the differences of used fuels, operation condition in power plant. The aim of this study is to investigate the performances of fly-ash cement mortar containing different type of fly-ashes. The basic analysis of fly ash such as chemical composition, SEM image analysis were performed. Many mortar specimens were fabricated to evaluate the properties (compressive strength, drying shrinkage and carbonation) of mortar with various fly ash. From the test results, the quality of each fly ash must be considered and fully weighted in fly ash concrete.
