  • A numerical method for simulating tree surface flows including the surface tension is presented. Numerical scheme is based an a fractional-step method with a finite volume formulation and the interface between liquid and gas is tracked by Volume of Fluid (VOF) method. Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation (PLIC) method is used to reconstruct the interface and the surface tension is considered using a Continuum Surface Force (CSF) model. Several free surface flow phenomena were simulated to show its effectiveness to find such phenomena.

  • An analytical method for the hydroelastic vibration of a vessel composed of an upper annular plate and a lower circular plate is developed by the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The two plates are clamped along a rigid cylindrical vessel wall. It is assumed that the fluid bounded by a rigid cylindrical vessel is incompressible and non-viscous. The wet mode shape of the plates is assumed as a combination of the dry mode shapes of the plates. The fluid motion is described by using the fluid displacement potential and determined by using the compatibility conditions along the fluid interface with the plate. Minimizing the Rayleigh quotient based on the energy conservation gives an eigenvalue problem. It is found that the theoretical results can predict well the fluid-coupled natural frequencies comparing with the finite element analysis result.

  • A numerical simultaneous solution involving a linear elastic model was applied to study the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) of membrane structures under wind actions, i.e., formulating the fluid-structure system with a single equation system and solving it simultaneously. The linear elastic model was applied to managing the data transfer at the fluid and structure interface. The monolithic equation of the FSI system was formulated by means of variational forms of equations for the fluid, structure and linear elastic model, and was solved by the Newton-Raphson method. Computation procedures of the proposed simultaneous solution are presented. It was applied to computation of flow around an elastic cylinder and a typical FSI problem to verify the validity and accuracy of the method. Then fluid-structure interaction analyses of a saddle membrane structure under wind actions for three typical cases were performed with the method. Wind pressure, wind-induced responses, displacement power spectra, aerodynamic damping and added mass of the membrane structure were computed and analyzed.

  • The coupled fluid-structure interaction problem is analyzed using the theoretical method to investigate the coupled vibration characteristics of functionally graded material(FGM) cylindrical shells conveying an incompressible, inviscid fluid. Material properties are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness according to a power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of the constituents. The steady flow of fluid is described by the classical potential flow theory. The motion of shell represented by the first order shear deformation theory(FSDT) to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains. The effect of internal fluid can be taken into consideration by imposing a relation between the fluid pressure and the radial displacement of the structure at the interface. Numerical examples are presented and compared with exiting results.

  • A method for the dynamic analysis of thin-walled cylindrical shell conveying steady fluid flow presents. The dynamics of thin-walled shell is based on Sanders' theory and the fluid flow in cylindrical shell is treated inviscid, incompressible fluid. A dynamic coupling conditions at fluid-structure interface is used. The equations of motion are solved by a finite element method and validated by comparing the natural frequency with other published results and Nastran. The influence of fluid velocity on the frequency response function is illustrated and discussed.

  • Numerical simulation of coextrusion process of viscoelastic fluids within a die has been carried out. In the coextrusion process velocity profile at the outflow boundary is not known a priori, which makes it difficult to impose the proper boundary condition at the outflow boundary. This difficulty has been avoided by using the open boundary condition (OBC) method. In this study, elastic viscous stress splitting (EVSS) formulation with streamline upwind (SU) method has been used in the finite element method. In order to test the validity of the OBC method, comparison between the results of fully developed condition at the outlet and those of OBC has been made for a Newtonian fluid. In the case of upper convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid, the effect of outflow boundary condition on the interface position has been investigated by using two meshes having different downstream lengths. In both cases, the results with the OBC method showed reasonable interface shape. In particular, for the UCM fluid the interface shape calculated with OBC was independent of the downstream length, while the results with the zero traction condition showed oscillation of interface position close to the outlet. Viscosity difference was found to be more important than elasticity difference in determining the final interface position. However, the overshoot of interface position near the con-fluent point increased with elasticity.

  • Numerical analysis of two-fluid flows for both water and air is carried out. Free-Surface flows with an arbitrary deformation have been simulated around two dimensional submerged hydrofoil. The computation is performed using a finite volume method with unstructured meshes and an interface capturing scheme to determine the shape of the free surface. The method uses control volumes with an arbitrary number of faces and allows cell-wise local mesh refinement. the integration in space is of second order based on midpoint rule integration and linear interpolation. The method is fully implicit and uses quadratic interpolation in time through three time levels The linear equation systems are solved by conjugate gradient type solvers and the non-linearity of equations is accounted for through picard iterations. The solution method is of pressure-correction type and solves sequentially the linearized momentum equations the continuity equation the conservation equation of one species and the equations or two turbulence quantities.

  • This paper reviews and compares three different methods for modeling incompressible and immiscible ternary fluid flows: the immersed boundary, level set, and phase-field methods. The immersed boundary method represents the moving interface by tracking the Lagrangian particles. In the level set method, an interface is defined implicitly by using the signed distance function, and its evolution is governed by a transport equation. In the phase-field method, the advective Cahn-Hilliard equation is used as the evolution equation, and its order parameter also implicitly defines an interface. Each method has its merits and demerits. We perform the several simulations under different conditions to examine the merits and demerits of each method. Based on the results, we determine the most suitable method depending on the specific modeling needs of different situations.
