  • A micro fluid actuator driven by electromagnetic force at MEMS(Micro Electro Mechanical System) level has been designed. The operation of the actuator was simulated in three steps. First, fluid flow analysis has been performed to determine the actuator load. With the load, dynamic behavior of the actuator structure has been analysed. Finally, fluid-structure interaction analysis has been performed to predict the performance of the actuator. To avoid excessive amount of computation, axisymmetric and plane strain 2-D models were used.

  • A dynamic modeling of a rotating pretwist blade which interacts with the fluid is proposed in this study. The hybrid deformation variable modeling method is employed to derive the equations of motion. The external force and moment induced by the fluid (with fixed configurations of the blade) are obtained by fluid flow analysis and tabulated in a database. This database is efficiently utilized to save the computational effort to calculate the dynamic response of the blade. The numerical results show that the fluid affects the transient response as well as frequency characteristics of the system.

  • This paper presents the numerical design technology of a passive orifice fluid damper system especially for the characteristics between the damper piston velocity and the damping force. Numerical analysis with the visual interfacial modeling technique was applied into the analysis of the damper system's dynamics. A prototype orifice fluid damper was manufactured and experimentally tested to validate the numerical simulation results. The performances of various damper system schemes were investigated based on the verified numerical simulation model of orifice fluid damper.

  • A new MR cylinder with built-in valves using MR fluid (MR valve) is suggested and fabricated for fluid control systems. The MR fluid is a newly developed functional fluid whose obvious viscosity is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity. The MR cylinder is composed of cylinder with small clearance and piston with electromagnet. The differential pressure is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity. It has the characteristics of simple, compact and reliable structure. The size of MR cylinder and piston has ${\varphi}30mm{\times}300mm\;and\;{\varphi}28.5mm{\times}120mm$ in face size, respectively and 0.8mm in gap length. Through experiments, it was found that the differential pressure is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity under little influence of the flow rate, which corresponds to a pressure control valve. The differential pressure of 0.47MPa and contact force of 320N were obtained with the input current of 1.5A. The rising time of force was 1.1s in step response of a manipulator using the MR cylinder. The effectiveness of the MR cylinder was also demonstrated through the force control.

  • The improvement of thermal-hydraulic analysis techniques is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants. The one-dimensional two-fluid model has been adopted in state-of-the-art thermal-hydraulic system codes. Current constitutive equations used in the system codes reach a mature level. Some exceptions are the partition method of wall friction in the momentum equation of the two-fluid model and the interfacial drag force model for a horizontal two-phase flow. This study is focused on deriving the partition method of wall friction in the momentum equation of the two-fluid model and modeling the interfacial drag force model for a horizontal bubbly flow. The one-dimensional momentum equation in the two-fluid model is derived from the local momentum equation. The derived one-dimensional momentum equation demonstrates that total wall friction should be apportioned to gas and liquid phases based on the phasic volume fraction, which is the same as that used in the SPACE code. The constitutive equations for the interfacial drag force are also identified. Based on the assessments, the Rassame-Hibiki correlation, Hibiki-Ishii correlation, Ishii-Zuber correlation, and Rassame-Hibiki correlation are recommended for computing the distribution parameter, interfacial area concentration, drag coefficient, and relative velocity covariance of a horizontal bubbly flow, respectively.

  • We consider some numerical solution methods for equilibrium equations Af + E$^{T}$ λ = r, Ef = s. Algebraic problems of this form evolve from many applications such as structural optimization, fluid flow, and circuits. An important approach, called the force method, to the solution to such problems involves dimension reduction nullspace computation for E. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the substructuring method for the solution step of the force method in the context of the incompressible fluid flow. We also suggests some iterative methods based upon substructuring scheme..

  • An oscillating foil can produce a driving force through the generation of a reversed $K\'{a}rm\'{a}n$ vortex street, and it can be expected to be a new highly effective propulsion system. A simple pitching foil model was made and it was operated within a water channel. The wake formation behind a pitching foil was visualized and unsteady fluid forces were measured using a 6-axis force sensor based on force and moment detectors. We have been examined various conditions such as reduced frequency, amplitude and pivot point in NACA 0010. The results showed that thrust coefficients increased with a reduced frequency. We also presented the experimental results on the characteristics of a pitching foil at various parameters.

  • Vortex-induced vibrations are a type of flow-induced vibrations caused by alternating lift forces. With increasing demand for renewable energy, the application of vortex-induced vibrations to renewable energy has been widely studied. Vortex-induced vibrations for aquatic clean energy (VIVACE) converter is a renewable energy device that generates electricity from rivers or oceans using vortex-induced vibrations. To increase the design life and power harnessing capacity of the VIVACE converter, the estimation of fluid forces due to vortex-induced vibrations is essential. Herein, vortex-induced vibrations were experimentally tested, and their amplitude and frequency response were measured. The amplitude results showed four different branches: initial branch, upper branch, lower branch, and desynchronization range. According to the fluid force coefficient results, the maximum lift coefficient occurred at the upper branch. Additionally, a mathematical model is proposed to estimate fluid forces due to vortex-induced vibrations without using measurement devices. This mathematical model enables the estimation of fluid force coefficients and phase lag using amplitude and frequency response of vortex-induced vibrations.

  • A pulsation of fluid in a pipe sometimes causes severe vibration of pipe. The inertia, damping and stiffness characteristics of pipe will be changed by the effect of fluid-structure interaction. The velocity and pressure of fluid will impose the force to a bended shape pipe. In this paper, a pipe with fluid flow is modeled by finite element method and the fluid force from pulsation is also modeled by the fluid dynamics. The vibration of pipe conveying pulsating fluid flow can be estimated by taking into consideration of fluid-structure interaction.
