This paper evaluate the performance of a Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid mount. The mount incorporates MR fluid in a conventional fluid mount to open and closed the inertia track between the fluid chambers of the mount. It is shown that such switching of the inertia track improves the mount's isolation effect, by eliminating the large transmissibility peak that commonly exists at frequencies higher than the notch frequency for conventional fluid mounts. The switching frequencies of the MR mount is evaluated, based on the parameters of the mount. A simple control scheme for switching the mount between the open and closed states is proposed, and the performance of the controlled mount is compared with conventional mounts. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to evaluate the effect of parameter errors in estimating the switching frequencies and mount performance. The results show that the switching frequencies can be accurately determined from mount parameters that are easily measured or estimated.
As a basic study on the fluid-structure interaction of the shell structure, a theoretical formulation has been suggested on the free vibration of a thin-walled conical frustum shell filled with an ideal fluid, where the shell is assumed to be fixed at both ends. The motion of fluid coupled with the shell is determined by means of the velocity potential flow theory. In order to calculate the normalized natural frequencies that represent the fluid effect on a fluid-coupled system, finite element analyses for a fluid-filled conical frustum shell are carried out. Also, the effect of apex angle on the frequencies is investigated.
This study analyzes especially drag and lift models recently developed for fluid-solid, fluid-fluid or liquid-liquid two-phase flows to understand their applicability on the computational fluid dynamics, CFD modeling of pulsatile blood flow. Virtual mass effect and the effect of red blood cells, RBCs aggregation on CFD modeling of blood flow are also shortly reviewed to recognize future tendencies in this field. Recent studies on two-phase flows are found as very useful to develop more powerful drag-lift models that reflect the effects of blood cell's shape, deformation, concentration, and aggregation.
A layer of compressible, rotating, elastica-viscous fluid heated & soluted from below is considered in the presence of vertical magnetic field to include the effect of Hall currents. Dispersion relation governing the effect of viscoelasticity, salinity gradient, rotation, magnetic field and Hall currents is derived. For the case of stationary convection, the Rivlin-Erickson fluid behaves like an ordinary Newtonian fluid. The compressibility, stable solute gradient, rotation and magnetic field postpone the onset of thermosolutal instability whereas Hall currents are found to hasten the onset of thermosolutal instability in the absence of rotation. In the presence of rotation, Hall currents postpone/hasten the onset of instability depending upon the value of wavenumbers. Again, the dispersion relation is analyzed numerically & the results depicted graphically. The stable solute gradient and magnetic field (and corresponding Hall currents) introduce oscillatory modes in the system which were non-existent in their absence. The case of overstability is discussed & sufficient conditions for non-existence of overstability are derived.
In the present study, the unsteady Couette flow with heat transfer of a dusty viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid under the influence of an exponential decaying pressure gradient is studied without neglecting the Hall effect. The parallel plates are assumed to be porous and subjected to a uniform suction from above and injection from below while the fluid is acted upon by an external uniform magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plates. The governing equations are solved numerically using finite differences to yield the velocity and temperature distributions for both the fluid and dust particles.
The fluid loading effect has been investigated for the shipboard equipment foundation mobility with finite element model. For the purpose, two kinds of finite element models for 60m class ship have been developed: global and local model. The former is for low frequency range and the latter for middle frequency range. These finite element models contain added mass explaining fluid loading effect. Added mass has been implemented with virtual mass matrix derived from Laplace equation governing fluid surrounding ship hull. The mobility assessment result for diesel generator foundation of the objective model shows that the fluid loading effect should be considered, especially in low frequency range, to more accurately assess shipboard equipment foundation mobility.
The effects of the uniform and spatially varying ground motions on the stochastic response of fluid-structure interaction system during an earthquake are investigated by using the displacement based fluid finite elements in this paper. For this purpose, variable-number-nodes two-dimensional fluid finite elements based on the Lagrangian approach is programmed in FORTRAN language and incorporated into a general-purpose computer program SVEM, which is used for stochastic dynamic analysis of solid systems under spatially varying earthquake ground motion. The spatially varying earthquake ground motion model includes wave-passage, incoherence and site-response effects. The effect of the wave-passage is considered by using various wave velocities. The incoherence effect is examined by considering the Harichandran-Vanmarcke and Luco-Wong coherency models. Homogeneous medium and firm soil types are selected for considering the site-response effect where the foundation supports are constructed. A concrete gravity dam is selected for numerical example. The S16E component recorded at Pacoima dam during the San Fernando Earthquake in 1971 is used as a ground motion. Three different analysis cases are considered for spatially varying ground motion. Displacements, stresses and hydrodynamic pressures occurring on the upstream face of the dam are calculated for each case and compare with those of uniform ground motion. It is concluded that spatially varying earthquake ground motions have important effects on the stochastic response of fluid-structure interaction systems.
In this paper, the Energy Flow Finite Element Analysis (EFFEA) was performed to predict the acoustic and vibrational responses of complicated plate structures considering improved Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI). For this, a new power transfer relationship was derived at the area junction where two different fluids are in contact on both sides of the plate. In order to increase the reliability of EFFEA of complicated plate structures immersed in a high-density fluid, the corrected flexural wavenumber and group velocity considering fluid-loading effect were derived. As the specific acoustic impedance of the fluid in contact with the plate increases, the flexural wavenumber of the plate increases. As a result, the flexural group velocity is reduced, and the spatial damping effect of the flexural energy density is increased. Additionally, for the EFFEA of arbitary-shaped built-up structures, the energy flow finite element formulation for the acoustic tetrahedral element was newly performed. Finally, for validation of the derived theory and developed software, numerical applications of complicated plate structures submerged in seawater or air were successfully performed.
The pulsatile flow of blood through a stenosed artery under the influence of external periodic body acceleration is studied. The effect of non-Newtonian nature of blood in small blood vessels has been taken into account by modeling blood as a Casson fluid. The non-linear coupled equations governing the flow are solved using perturbation analysis assuming that the Womersley frequency parameter is small which is valid for physiological situations in small blood vessels. The effect of pulsatility, stenosis, body acceleration, yield stress of the fluid and pressure gradient on the yield plane locations, velocity distribution, flow rate, shear stress and frictional resistance are investigated. It is noticed that the effect of yield stress and stenosis is to reduce flow rate and increase flow resistance. The impact of body acceleration is to enhance the flow rate and reduces resistance to flow.
