A two-dimensional Stokes flow past a vertical plate in a channel is analyzed. The vertical plate is located at the center of the channel, and plane Poiseuille flow exists far upstream and downstream of the vertical plate. The Stokes approximation is used, and the flow is investigated analytically using the method of eigenfunction expansion and the point collocation method. From the analysis, the stream function and pressure distribution are obtained, and the pressure and shear stress distributions on the plate and channel wall are calculated. The additional pressure drop induced by the vertical plate and the force exerted on it are calculated as functions of the length of the vertical plate. For a typical length of the vertical plate, the streamline pattern and pressure distribution are shown. In addition, numerical analysis of laminar flow with a small Reynolds number is carried out to analyze the effect of a small Reynolds number on the flow pattern.
Tall buildings are often subjected to steady and unsteady forces due to external wind flows. Measurement and mitigation of these forces becomes critical to structural design in engineering applications. Over the last few decades, many approaches such as modification of the external geometry of structures have been investigated to mitigate wind-induced load. One such proven geometric modification involved the rounding of sharp corners. In this work, we systematically analyze the impact of rounded corner radii on the reducing the flow-induced loading on a square cylinder. We perform 3-Dimensional (3D) simulations for high Reynolds number flows (Re=1 × 105) which are more likely to be encountered in practical applications. An Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES) method capable of capturing flow accurately at large Reynolds numbers is employed in this study. The IDDES formulation uses a k-ω Shear Stress Transport (SST) model for near-wall modelling that prevents mesh-induced separation of the boundary layer. The effects of these corner modifications are analyzed in terms of the resulting variations in the mean and fluctuating components of the aerodynamic forces compared to a square cylinder with no geometric changes. Plots of the angular distribution of the mean and fluctuating coefficient of pressure along the square cylinder's surface illustrate the effects of corner modifications on the different parts of the cylinder. The windward corner's separation angle was observed to decrease with an increase in radius, resulting in a narrower and longer recirculation region. Furthermore, with an increase in radius, a reduction in the fluctuating lift, mean drag, and fluctuating drag coefficients has been observed.
This paper investigates the strength characteristics and stress-strain behaviors of waste fishing net (WFN)-added lightweight soil. The lightweight soil, which consisted of dredged soil, crumb rubber, and cement, was reinforced with WFN in order to increase its shear strength. Glue treated WFN was also added to lightweight soil to improve the interlocking between the soil mixture and WFN. Three kinds of test specimens were prepared: unreinforced lightweight soil, reinforced lightweight soil without glue treatment, and reinforced lightweight soil with glue treatment. Several series of laboratory tests were carried out, including flow value tests, unconfined compression tests, and SEM analyses. From the experimental results, it was found that the peak strength of the reinforced lightweight soil with glue treatment was increased by the increased interlocking between the soil mixture and WFN, which was induced from the bonding effect. The stress-strain relation of the reinforced lightweight soil, irrespective of the glue treatment, showed a more ductile behavior than that of the unreinforced lightweight soil.

A two-dimensional Stokes flow past a circular cylinder in a channel is analyzed. The circular cylinder is located at the center of the channel, and a plane Poiseuille flow exists upstream and downstream far from the circular cylinder. The Stokes approximation is used, and the flow is investigated analytically by using the eigenfunction expansion and the least square methods. From the analysis, the stream function and pressure distribution are obtained, and the pressure and shear stress distributions on the circular cylinder and channel wall are calculated. The additional pressure drop induced by the circular cylinder and the force exerted on it are calculated as functions of the length of the radius of the circular cylinder. For a typical length of the radius of the circular cylinder, the streamline pattern and pressure distribution are shown.

This study presents the current status of DECOVALEX-2023 project Task G and our research results so far. Task G, named 'Safety ImplicAtions of Fluid Flow, Shear, Thermal and Reaction Processes within Crystalline Rock Fracture NETworks (SAFENET)' aims at developing a numerical method to simulate the fracture creation and propagation, and the coupled thermohydro-mechanical processes in fracture in crystalline rocks. The first research step of Task G is a benchmark simulation, which is designed for research teams to make their modelling codes more robust and verify whether the models can represent an analytical solution for displacements of a single rock fracture. We reproduced the mechanical behavior of rock and embedded single fracture using a three-dimensional grain-based distinct element model for the simulations. In this method, the structure of the rock was represented by an assembly of rigid tetrahedral grains moving independently of each other, and the mechanical interactions at the grains and their contacts were calculated using 3DEC. The simulation results revealed that the stresses induced along the embedded fracture in the model were relatively low compared to those calculated by stress analysis due to stress redistribution and constrained fracture displacements. The fracture normal and shear displacements of the numerical model showed good agreement with the analytical solutions. The numerical model will be enhanced by continuing collaboration and interaction with other research teams of DECOVALEX-2023 Task G and validated using various experiments in a further study.

The effects of Triangle Groove Strips (TGS) on Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) suppression of marine riser are numerically investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. The range of Reynolds number in simulations is 4.0 × 104 < Re < 1.2 × 105. The two-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model are used to calculate the flow around marine riser. The Newmark-β method is employed for evaluating the structure dynamics of marine riser. The effect of the height ratio (ε) of TGS on VIV suppression is evaluated. The amplitude responses, frequency responses, vortex patterns and the flow around the structures are discussed in detail. With the increase of the height ratio of TGS, the suppression effect of TGS on VIV suppression is improved firstly and then weakened. When ε=0.04, the suppression effect of TGS is the best. Compared with the VIV responses of smooth marine riser, the amplitude ratio is reduced by 38.9%, the peak of the lift coefficient is reduced by 69% and the peak of the drag coefficient is reduced by 40% when Re=6.0 × 104. With the increase of Reynolds number, the suppression effect of TGS on VIV suppression is improved firstly and then weakened. When the Reynolds number is 7.0 × 104, the amplitude ratio can be reduced by 40.1%. As to the large-amplitude vibration cases, the TGS show nice suppression effect on VIV.
Acoustic streaming induced by the microscopic longitudinal ultrasonic vibration at 28.5 ㎑ is visualized between the quiescent glass plate and ultrasonic vibrator by particle imaging velocimetry(PIV) using laser. To investigate the augmentation of air flow velocity of acoustic streaming. the velocity variations of air streaming between the stationary plate and ultrasonic vibrator are measured in real-time. It is experimentally investigated that the magnitude of the acoustic streaming dependent upon the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and stationary p1ate results in the variations of the average velocity fields as a outcome of the bulk air flow caused by the ultrasonic vibration. In addition. maximum acoustic streaming velocity exists at resonant gap. 18mm that is one of the resonant gaps (H=18, 24, 30, 36㎜) at which resonance occurs. The variation of the local maximum turbulent intensity with axial direction appear to reveal the value of 8%∼70% dependent upon the gap between the quiescent glass plate and ultrasonic vibrator. Shearstress is also maximized at the center region of the vibrator and the vorticity is also maximum and minimum in the neighborhood of the center of the vibrator at which the local maximum turbulent intensity and shear stress exist.
Bone remodeling is a continuous process of skeletal renewal during which bone formation is tightly coupled to bone resorption. Mechanical loading is an important regulator of bone formation and resorption. In recent studies, neurotransmitters such as vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) were found to be present inside bone tissue and have been suggested to potentially regulate bone remodeling. In this study, our objective was to use a pre-established in vitro oscillatory fluid flow-induced shear stress mechanical loading system to quantify the effect of VIP on bone resorptive activity and investigate its combined effect with mechanical loading. VIP decreased osteoclastogenesis significantly decreased RANKL/OPG mRNA ration by approximately 90%. Combined VIP and mechanical loading further decreased RANKL/OPG ratio to approximately 95%. These results suggest that VIP present in bone tissue may synergistically act with mechanical loading to regulate bone remodeling via suppression of bone resorptive activities.

Heavy storms rainfall has caused many landslides and slope failures especially in the mountainous area of the world. Landslides and slope failures are common geologic hazards and posed serious threats and globally cause billions in monetary losses and thousands of casualies each year so that studies on slope stability and its failure mechanism under rainfall are being increasing attention of these days. Rainfall-induced slope failures are generally caused by the rise in ground water level, and increase in pore water pressures and seepage forces during periods of intense rainfall. The effective stress in the soil will be decreased due to the increased pore pressure, which thus reduces the soil shear strength, eventually resulting in slope failure. During the rainfall, a wetting front goes downward into the slope, resulting in a gradual increase of the water content and a decrease of the negative pore-water pressure. This negative pore-water pressure is referred to as matric suction when referenced to the pore air pressure that contributes to the stability of unsaturated soil slopes. Therefore, the importance is the study of saturated unsaturated soil behaviors in evaluation of slope stability under heavy rainfall condition. In an actual field, a series of failures may occur in a slope due to a rainfall event. So, this study attempts to develop a numerical model to investigate this failure mechanism. A two-dimensional seepage flow model coupled with a one-dimensional surface flow and erosion/deposition model is used for seepage analysis. It is necessary to identify either there is surface runoff produced or not in a soil slope during a rainfall event, while analyzing the seepage and stability of such slopes. Runoff produced by rainfall may result erosion/deposition process on the surface of the slope. The depth of runoff has vital role in the seepage process within the soil domain so that surface flow and erosion/deposition model computes the surface water head of the runoff produced by the rainfall, and erosion/deposition on the surface of the model slope. Pore water pressure and moisture content data obtained by the seepage flow model are then used to analyze the stability of the slope. Spencer method of slope stability analysis is incorporated into dynamic programming to locate the critical slip surface of a general slope.

We simulated the fault reactivation experiment conducted at 'Main Fault' intersecting the low permeability clay formations of Mont Terri Underground Research Laboratory in Switzerland using TOUGH-FLAC simulator. The fluid flow along a fault was modelled with solid elements and governed by Darcy's law with the cubic law in TOUGH2, whereas the mechanical behavior of a single fault was represented by creating interface elements between two separating rock blocks in FLAC3D. We formulate the hydro-mechanical coupling relation of hydraulic aperture to consider the elastic fracture opening and failure-induced dilation for reproducing the abrupt changes in injection flow rate and monitoring pressure at fracture opening pressure. A parametric study was conducted to examine the effects of in-situ stress condition and fault deformation and strength parameters and to find the optimal parameter set to reproduce the field observations. In the best matching simulation, the fracture opening pressure and variations of injection flow rate and monitoring pressure showed good agreement with field experiment results, which suggests the capability of the numerical model to reasonably capture the fracture opening and propagation process. The model overestimated the fault displacement in shear direction and the range of reactivated zone, which was attributed to the progressive shear failures along the fault at high injection pressure. In the field experiment results, however, fracture tensile opening seems the dominant mechanism affecting the hydraulic aperture increase.
