  • We performed the numerical analysis on the airflow characteristics in the two type of cleanroom systems, which are the axial fan type (AFT) and the fan filter unit (FFU). A computational fluid dynamic model was applied to investigate and compare the nonuniformity, the deflection angle and the air ventilation effectiveness of the two designs of cleanrooms when dampers are adjusted and not adjusted. And the flow-resistance models of the various components were used in this simulation. We know that the airflow characteristics of the cleanrooms are largely affected by damper adjusting And we also find out that the FFU system is superior to the AFT system through the comparison of the cleanroom performance indices.

  • Unsteady fluid dynamics analysis of flow characteristics inside a Metal DPF system is done using a commercial CAE software, CFD-ACE+. The time profiles of both temperature and pressure of exhaust gas are given as initial conditions. It was found that the position of connecting pipes and the numbering of exhaust gases did not affect the flow uniformity. The presence of a DPF resulted in the significant flow nonuniformity effect on the flow characteristics at the inlet of the DPF. Present results can be applied to the selection of optimal geometry that produces uniform flow characteristics inside a DPF system.

  • The variations of the temperature field in a passenger compartment were measured by using a HSI true color image processing system and TLC(Thermochromic Liquid Crystal) solution. This temperature measurement technique was proved to be useful for analyzing the ventilation flow. The flow field in the passenger compartment was visualized using a particle streak method with pulsed laser light sheet. The temperature field and flow field in the passenger copartment were affected significantly by the ventilation mode. The panel-vent mode heating had shorter elapse time to reach a uniform temperature than the foot-vent mode under the same ventilation condition and nonuniformity inside the passenger compartment could be minimized effectively by using the bilevel heating mode. The temperature increase rate in the rear passenger compartment was iower than the front compartment, especially in the vicinity of the rear seat occupants' knee level.

  • In order to achieve thrust vector control and discharge stabilization in Hall thrusters, the azimuthal nonuniformity of propellant flow rate in an acceleration channel was created. A plenum chamber was divided into two rooms by two walls and propellant flow rate supplied to each section was independently controlled. In a magnetic layer type Hall thruster, steering angle of up to ${\pm}2.3$ degree was achieved. In an anode layer type Hall thruster, discharge current oscillation amplitude was decreased with the normalized differential mass flow rate.

  • The optimum shape of header part in a PFHE (parallel-flow heat exchanger) is studied. The optimal values of each geometric parameter are proposed according to their order of influence with varying the four important parameters (the injection angle of working fluid ($\Theta$), the shape of inlet(S), the location of inlet ($y_c/D_{in}$) and the height of the protruding flat tube ( $y_{b/}$ $D_{in}$ )). The optimal geometric parameters are as follows:$\Theta= -21^{\circ}C,\; S=Type\; A \;an\;y_b/D_{in}$/=0. The heat transfer rate of the optimum model, compared to that of the reference model, is increased by about 55%. The optimal geometric parameters ran be applicable to the Reynolds number ranging from 5,000 to 20,000.0.

  • Chemical Mechanical Polishing(CMP) in semiconductor production is characterized its output property by Removal Rate(RR) and Non-Uniformity(NU). Some Previous works shows that RR is determined by production of pressure and velocity and NC is also largely affected by velocity of flow-field during CMP. This study is about the direct measurement of velocity of slurry during CMP and reconstruction whole flow-field by Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) Techniques. Typical PIV system is tuned adequately for inspecting CMP and Slurry Flow-field is measured by changing both Pad RPM and Carrier RPM. The results show that velocity is majorly determined not by Carrier RPM, but by Pad RPM.

  • In a hope to better understand the flow and convective heat transfer characteristics inside a ball bearing, air flow between the rolling elements and raceways at high speed bearing rotation is numerically investigated using a simplified inner geometry of bearing and a CFD technique. Flow simulation results reveal the pressure distribution of airflow and the shear stress distribution on the ball surface, of which nonuniformity becomes significant with the increasing rotational speed. Also, the local point of maximum shear stress coincides with the stagnation flow area on the surface of rolling elements. A complex pattern of three-dimensional vortex structures is found in the air flow due to the relative motion of bearing elements and three different types of vortex pairs exist around the rotating and orbiting rolling elements.

  • Experiments were conducted in an initially straight laboratory alluvial channel to investigate channel meandering characteristics. The experimental observations revealed an empirical relation between three types of tortuosity ratios used for describing meandering characteristics. Furthermore, the Strauhal number was found to be higher for bed material with greater resistance to erosion than with lower resistance to erosion. The meandering characteristics were also investigated using the concept of buckling employed in solid mechanics and the concept of siphoning of fluid mechanics. The buckling of flow, attributable to the flow nonuniformity across the channel cross-section, was found to follow the same pattern as did meandering observed experimentally. The processes of expansion of meanders and cut-off can be explained using the concept of siphoning. The results of expanding meander planforms observed in four experimental tests supported the viability of these concepts.

  • Waterjet propulsion is widely used to thrust high speed marine vessels in excess of 30-35 knots by virtue of the high propulsive efficiency, good maneuverability, and less cavitation. From the aspect of power loss, approximately $7-9\%$ of the total power is lost in intake duct due to the flow separation, nonuniformity, etc. Thus, detail understanding of flow phenomena occurring within intake duct is essential to reduce the power loss, as well as noise and vibration. The present work solved 30 incompressible RANS equations to provide complicated viscous flow features of intake duct. The numerical results were compared with experiments and good agreements were obtained for three jet velocity ratios.

  • Pebble flow characteristics can be significantly affected by the configuration of pebble bed, especially for HTGR pebble beds. How to achieve a desired uniform flow pattern without stagnation is the top priority for reactor design. Pebbles flows inside some specially designed pebble bed with arc-shaped contraction configurations at the bottom, including both concave-inward and convex-outward shapes are explored based on discrete element method. Flow characteristics including pebble retention, residence-time frequency density, flow uniformity as well as axial velocity are investigated. The results show that the traditionally designed pebble bed with cone-shape bottom is not the most preferred structure with respect to flow pattern for reactor design. By improving the contraction configuration, the flow performance can be significantly enhanced. The flow in the convex-shape configuration featured by uniformity, consistency and less stagnation, is much more desirable for pebble bed design. In contrast, when the shape is from convex-forward to concave-inward, the flow shows more nonuniformity and stagnation in the corner although the average cross-section axial velocity is the largest due to the dominant middle pebbles.
