The $Li-O_2$ battery has been attracting much attention recently, due to its very high theoretical capacity compared with Li-ion chemistries. Nevertheless, several studies within the last few years revealed that Li-ion derived electrolytes based on alkyl carbonate solvents, which have been commonly used in the last 27 years, are irreversibly consumed at the $O_2$ electrode. Accordingly, more stable electrolytes are required capable to operate with both the Li metal anode and the $O_2$ cathode. Thus, due to their favorable properties such as non volatility, chemical inertia, and favorable behavior toward the Li metal electrode, ionic liquid-based electrolytes have gathered increasing attention from the scientific community for its application in $Li-O_2$ batteries. However, the scale-up of Li-$O_2$ technology to real application requires solving the mass transport limitation, especially for supplying oxygen to the cathode. Hence, the 'LABOHR' project proposes the introduction of a flooded cathode configuration and the circulation of the electrolyte, which is then used as an oxygen carrier from an external $O_2$ harvesting device to the cathode for freeing the system from diffusion limitation.
In remote islands, due to expense of existing generation systems, installation of photovoltaic cells (PVs) and wind turbines has a chance of reducing generation costs. However, in island power systems, even short-term power fluctuations change the frequency of grids because of their small inertia constant. In order to compensate power fluctuations, the authors proposed the power consumption control of pumps which send water to tanks. The power control doesn’t affect water users’ convenience as long as tanks hold water. Based on experimental characteristics of a pump system, this paper shows methods to determine reference power consumption of the system with compensation for short-term PV fluctuations while satisfying water demand. One method uses a PI controller and the other method calculates reference power consumption from water flow reference. Simulations with a PV and a pump system are carried out to find optimum parameters and to compare the methods. Results show that both PI control method and water flow calculation method are useful for satisfying the water demand constraint. The water demand constraint has a little impact to suppression of the short-term power fluctuation in this condition.
Generation mechanisms of the three moderate-or-greater (MOG)-level clear-air turbulence (CAT) encounters over South Korea are investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The cases are selected among the MOG-level CAT events occurred in Korea during 2002-2008 that are categorized into three different generation mechanisms (upper-level front and jet stream, anticyclonic flow, and mountain waves) in the previous study by Min et al. For the case at 0127 UTC 18 Jun 2003, strong vertical wind shear (0.025 $s^{-1}$) generates shearing instabilities below the enhanced upper-level jet core of the maximum wind speed exceeding 50 m $s^{-1}$, and it induces turbulence near the observed CAT event over mid Korea. For the case at 2330 UTC 22 Nov 2006, areas of the inertia instability represented by the negative absolute vorticity are formed in the anticyclonically sheared side of the jet stream, and turbulence is activated near the observed CAT event over southwest of Korea. For the case at 0450 UTC 16 Feb 2003, vertically propagating mountain waves locally trigger shearing instability (Ri < 0.25) near the area where the background Richardson number is sufficiently small (0.25 < Ri < 1), and it induces turbulence near the observed CAT over the Eastern mountainous region of South Korea.
Particulate matters in a water distribution system are main causes of turbidity and discoloration of tap water. They could be removed by conventional or uni-directional flushing in a water distribution system. The behaviors and required flow velocity of particles are not well known for their flushing. A model water main and hydrant were made from transparent acrylic pipe of 30mm and 16mm in diameter, respectively. We analyzed the effect of flushing velocity, particle density, and particle diameter. We found that the existence of break-though velocities at which particles begin to be removed, and which are affected by their physical properties. The removal efficiencies seemed to be influenced by resuspension capabilities related to their upward movement from the bottom. Heavy particles like scale were hard to remove through upflow hydrant because the falling velocity, calculated using Stokes' law, was higher. Particle removal efficiencies of upward hydrant and downward drain showed minor differences. Additionally, the length between hydrant and control valve affected flushing efficiency because the particulate matters were trapped in this space by inertia and recirculating flow.

The non-linear dynamic characteristics of a semi-circular pipe conveying fluid are investigated when the pipe is clamped at both ends. To consider the geometric non-linearity for the radial and circumferential displacements, this study adopts the Lagrange strain theory for large deformation and the extensible dynamics based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory for slenderness assumption. By using the Hamilton principle, the non-linear partial differential equations are derived for the in-plane motions of the pipe, considering the fluid inertia forces as a kind of non-conservative forces. The linear and non-linear terms in the governing equations are compared with those in the previous study, and some significant differences are discussed. To investigate the dynamic characteristics of the system, the discretized equations of motion are derived form the Galerkin method. The natural frequencies varying with the flow velocity are computed fen the two cases, which one is the linear problem and the other is the linearized problem in the neighborhood of the equilibrium position. Finally, the time responses at various flow velocities are directly computed by using the generalized- method. From these results, we should to describe the non-linear behavior to analyze dynamics of a semi-circular pipe conveying fluid more precisely.

The spirometer is a medical device that measures the instantaneous velocity of the respiratory gas flow capacity. It is used for testing the condition of the lung and patient monitoring. It measures the absolute capacity difference that includes the flow capacity signal. In this paper, by using an ultrasound sensor that reduce the error caused by the inertia and pressure it has improved the transmission and receiving signal. This has enabled patients with weal respiratory to use the spirometer. Also, by using the embedded hardware system, a precise and prompt detection system was implemented.
Inertial microfluidics has attracted significant attention in recent years due to its superior benefits of high throughput, precise control, simplicity, and low cost. Many inertial microfluidic applications have been demonstrated for physiological sample processing, clinical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring and cleanup. In this review, we discuss the fundamental mechanisms and principles of inertial migration and Dean flow, which are the basis of inertial microfluidics, and provide basic scaling laws for designing the inertial microfluidic devices. This will allow end-users with diverse backgrounds to more easily take advantage of the inertial microfluidic technologies in a wide range of applications. A variety of recent applications are also classified according to the structure of the microchannel: straight channels and curved channels. Finally, several future perspectives of employing fluid inertia in microfluidic-based cell sorting are discussed. Inertial microfluidics is still expected to be promising in the near future with more novel designs using various shapes of cross section, sheath flows with different viscosities, or technologies that target micron and submicron bioparticles.
The flow signal or spool position signal is used to determine the dynamic characteristics of directional control valves. Alternatively, the signal of spool position or flow can be replaced with the velocity of a low friction, low inertia actuator. In this study, the frequency response of the servo valve equipped with a spool position transducer is measured with a metering cylinder. The input signal, spool displacement, load pressure, and velocity of the metering cylinder are measured, and the theoretical results from the transfer function analysis are verified. The superposition rule for magnitude ratio and phase angle was found to be always applicable among any signal type, and it was found that the load pressure signal is not appropriate for use as the signal for measuring the frequency response of a servo valve. It was confirmed that the frequency response of a servo valve using metering cylinder was similar to the results from a spool displacement signal. The metering cylinder used for measuring the frequency response of a servo valve should be designed to have sufficiently greater bandwidth frequency than the bandwidth frequency of the servo valve.
This paper presents a study on the flexural stiffness, plastic hinge length and plastic hinge rotation capacity of reinforced high performance concrete beams. 15 beams with different strength of concrete, reinforcement ratio and the pattern of loadings were tested. From the test results of reinforced normal strength concrete beams and reinforced high performance concrete beams with the concrete which has cylinder compressive strength of 700kg/${cm}^2$, slump value of 20~25cm and slump-flow value of 60~70cm. It is found that an extreme fiber concrete compressive strain of ${\varepsilon}_{cu}=0.0047$ may be used in ultimate curvature computations of reinforced high performance concrete beams. An empirical equation is proposed to estimate the effective moment of inertia. length and rotation capacity of plastic hinge of simply supported reinforced high performance concrete beams. The estimated deflections using this equation agree well with the experimental values.

Due to the dense and complicated working environment, the construction industry is susceptible to many accidents. Worker's fall is a severe problem at the construction site, including falling into holes or openings because of the inadequate coverings as per the safety rules. During the construction or demolition of a building, openings and holes are formed in the floors and roofs. Many workers neglect to cover openings for ease of work while being aware of the risks of holes, openings, and gaps at heights. However, there are safety rules for worker safety; the holes and openings must be covered to prevent falls. The safety inspector typically examines it by visiting the construction site, which is time-consuming and requires safety manager efforts. Therefore, this study presented a worker-driven approach (the worker is involved in the reporting process) to facilitate safety managers by developing integrated computer vision and inertia sensors-based mobile applications to identify openings. The TensorFlow framework is used to design Convolutional Neural Network (CNN); the designed CNN is trained on a custom dataset for binary class openings and covered and deployed on an android smartphone. When an application captures an image, the device also extracts the accelerometer values to determine the inclination in parallel with the classification task of the device to predict the final output as floor (openings/ covered), wall (openings/covered), and roof (openings / covered). The proposed worker-driven approach will be extended with other case scenarios at the construction site.
