  • High speed rotor test rig was developed for flexible rotor systems which have its bending critical speed at 14000 rpm. In designing the flexible rotor systems, operating speed have to be escaped from the critical speed, due to large vibration. In this paper, dynamic characteristics of the rotor systems were analyzed and compared with test results. And the effect of allison ring damper and rotor balancing were examined both theoretically and experimentally. Finally, the magnitude of vibration was largely reduced at the critical speed.

  • Experiment on the modal balancing of a flexible rotor supported on two kinds of fluid film bearings is performed to verify the modal balancing theory. The fluid film bearings are a tilting pad bearing and a two axial grooved journal bearing. One is inherently stable, but the other is not. The experimental result shows that the modal balancing method is effective for balancing of a high speed flexible rotor system. Besides, the critical speeds and mode shapes measured experimentally are in good coincidence with the results of rotordynamic analysis. Oil whip, which is the instability phenomenon due to fluid film force, is also observed during the experiment.

  • This article proposes a new technique of the dynamic model using multi-body dynamic analysis tool for a flexible main spindle rotor system with a novel phase adjusting control technique for the purpose of an active control of rotor vibration. The dynamic model is used as a plant model. Also in order to make control system, a component parameters and phase controller is composed and simulated by SIMULINK. The vibration is reduced to 50%. Therefore the ADAMS dynamic model for the flexible main spindle rotor and the phase adjusting control techniques may be effective for the suppressing the vibration and helpful for the future active control for rotor vibration.

  • Turbomachinery such as turbines, pumps and compressors, which are installed in transportation systems, including aircrafts, ships, and space vehicles, etc., often perform crucial missions and are exposed to potential dangerous impact environments such as base-transferred shock forces. To protect turbomachinery from excessive shock forces, it may be needed to accurately analyze transient responses of their rotors, considering the dynamics of mount designs to be applied. In this study a generalized FE transient response analysis model, introducing relative displacements, is proposed to accurately predict transient responses of a flexible rotor-bearing system with mount systems to base-transferred shock forces. In the transient analyses the state-space Newmark method of a direct time integration scheme is utilized, which is based on the average velocity concept. Results show that for the identical mount systems considered, the proposed FE-based detailed flexible rotor model yields more reduced transient vibration responses to the same shocks than a conventional simple model, obtained by treating a rotor as concentrated lumped mass, equivalent spring and a damper or Jeffcott rotor model. Hence, in order to design a rotor-bearing system with a more compact light-weighted mount system, preparing against any potential excessive shock, the proposed FE transient response analysis model herein is recommended.

  • This paper presents a novel dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) to suppress the unbalance response of flexible rotor-bearing systems. The DVA unit consists of two DVAs, an adapter to place the DVAs and an adapter frame to locate the adapter. The essential feature of the proposed DVA unit is to place itself on any desirable location of the shaft without disassembling the rotor-bearing system under consideration. A simulation with a 3D element based commercial rotor dynamic software is made to test the possibility of the proposed DVA on the suppression of unbalance response in rotor-bearing systems. Experiments are performed to validate the proposed DVA unit. The simulation and experiments show that the proposed DVA unit is very effective to suppress the unbalance response in rotor-bearing system at designated rotational speeds of interest.

  • In this paper a transfer method model was introduced in order to analyze critical speeds and vibration modes of a flexible rotor system, whose rotor shaft is cupped into and fitted with a thin-walled cylinder at its end. The computed analysis results were compared with those of the experimental modal test. Both results show good agreement each other. Furthermore the free-run(or run-down) test result for the real rotor system also shows that the proposed transfer matrix method modelling can be successfully applicable to analyzing accurate critical speeds(or natural frequencies) of the rotor system.

  • When we design a controller for the active magnetic bearings that support a large rotor, it is important to have an accurate model of the rotor. For the case of the flywheel that is used to store energy, an accurate rotor model is especially important because the dynamics change with respect to the running speed due to gyroscopic effects. In this paper, we present a procedure of obtaining an accurate rotor model of a large flywheel energy storage system using finite-element method. The model can predict the first and the second bending mode which match well with the experimental results obtained from a prototype flywheel energy storage system.

  • This paper proposes a criterion to select the modes for modal truncated model of flexible rotor only supported by active magnetic bearings. The proposed approach relies on the concepts of minimum control input and output energy assuming that the system is subjected to transient disturbances. Accurate large order model for the levitated rotor is taken by finite element analysis and transformed to the modal equation. By proposed methodology, which modal states should be retained in the truncated model are investigated over the whole operational speed range by the calculation. Finally, the effectiveness is verified by checking the model error between original model and reduced model.
