The progress that becomes a basis for measuring the outcome of project is a core of project control. Follow-up corrective actions are determined depending on the degree of their differences. The methods of measuring the project progress have been developed though a variety of research and many were verified through the cases. Among such methods, this study selected Start/Finish method and Fixed Formula method. In order to check the limitations of the progress utilized in the two methods, the study compared their progresses to the progress of Percentage Complete method and analyzed the differences shown in their actual applications. Through this, it suggested the forms and scale of the projects appropriate to the application of Fixed Formula method. As for the research progress method, the study first generated a number of virtual project schedules for the establishment of an analysis model. These project schedules were varied in a way that they had different project periods and the number of different activities. The study also generated numerous project schedules for difference test. After establishing a virtual schedule plan by the scale of projects, it measured their progresses by period, analyzed the differences and repeated this procedure to obtain the results.
Purpose: The influence of age on time preference is not identified in the usual cross-sectional analysis. This study aims to test whether age affects time preference after controlling for the effects of individual heterogeneity including cohort effects. Research design, data and methodology: Drawing on a nationally representative panel dataset of Indonesians, we estimate the effects of age on time preference after controlling for unobserved individual heterogeneity as well as potential cohort effects. We measure time preference exploiting information on two sets of multiple price lists: one for a one-year delay, and the other for a five-year delay. Results: When we controlled for time-invariant individual characteristics, including birth cohort effects in a fixed effects model, the older men and women were more patient in a linear fashion, particularly when the delay was longer. To highlight the importance of controlling for individual fixed effects, we repeated the specification without controlling for individual fixed effects in OLS or censored maximum likelihood regression; we found no relation between age and impatience in men or women and for a one or five-year delay. Conclusions: The older men and women are more patient, and time preferences are correlated with unobserved individual heterogeneity.
This paper deals with an economic design of acelerated life test under constant stresses where failure times are exponentially distributed. In this case the optimization criterion is the information amount per unit cost. Fisher's information matrix of exponential distribution's parameters and expected cost considering fixed and variable costs are obtained. The decision variable is the censoring time in the model. In the 2-level constant stress case, it is proved that the optimal solution exists and is unique under some condition. Numerical examples are also included.
1. When the frame of the experimental apparatus was directly fixed on the platform, result from the spectrum density analysis showed that the generated vibration frequecy of the system was nearly-same as the system's own characteristic vibration frequency, 80Hz, in the case of the forcing vibration frequency was 7.5 to 22.5Hz. The reduction ratio of acceleration by balanced type model compare to non-balanced type one was 26.66 percent. 2. When the frame of experimental apparatus was fixed on the platform with putting a shock absorbing rubber between the frame and the platform, the generated vibration frequency of the system was same as forcing vibration frequency. When either frequency or the amplitude of the forcing vibration was increased, the acceleration ratio was increased too. The average reduction ratio was resulted 44.77 per cent. It was concluded that this method of acceleration measurement(the method using a shock absorbing rubber) was a reaonable method, because actual machine will work under such condition. As the vibration frequency and aptitude were increased, the absolute magnitude of acceleration was increased. 3. unbalanced rotating parts, and unbalanced moment of inertia of links were supposed to be causing factors of residual vibration in spite of using the balanced type oscillating mole drainer. This fact suggested that the attachment of the counter weight on the rotating parts which satisfy the condition mw$.$rw=m0e, was necessary. And also, it was expected that the shock absorbing effect could be improved by putting the shock absorbing materials between the moving parts and their supports.
In this study, we proposed a new type of dual-buoy wave energy converter (WEC) exploiting multi-resonance and analyzed the experimental results from a model test in a 2-D wave flume. A dual-buoy WEC using multi-resonance has two advantages: high efficiency at the resonant frequencies and the potential to extend the frequency range available to extract wave power from the WEC. The suggested WEC was composed of an outer buoy and an inner buoy sliding vertically inside the outer buoy. As the power take-off device, a linear electric generator (LEG) consisting of permanent magnets and coils fixed at each buoy was adopted. Electricity was produced by the relative heave motion between the two buoys. To search for the optimal shape of a dual-buoy WEC, we conducted experiments on the heave motion of a two-body system in regular waves without an LEG installed. Model tests with six combinations of experimental models were conducted in order to find the motion characteristics of a dual-buoy WEC. It was found that model 2, which included a ring-shaped appendage to move the resonant frequency of the outer buoy toward a high value, showed a higher relative heave response amplitude operator (RAO) curve than model 1. In addition, the double-peak shape of the heave RAO curve shown for model 2 indicated the extension of the frequency range for extracting wave power in irregular waves.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate exophytically vertical bone formation in residual ridge of the beagle dog by the concept of guided bone regeneration with a titanium reinforced e-PTFE membrane combined with irradiated cancellous human bone. Twelve male beagle dogs(mean age 1.5 years and mean weight 12kg) were used for this study. The alveolar ridges after extraction of all mandibular premolars were surgically and horizontally removed. At 8 weeks after extractions, full-thickness flap was reflected and cortical bone was removed with round bur and copious irrigation. Rectangular parallelepiped(10mm in length, 5mm in width, and 4mm in height) bended with titanium-reinforced e-PTFE(TR e-PTFE) membrane was placed on the decorticated alveolar ridge, fixed with metal pins and covered with full-thickness flap and assigned as a control group. Test groups ere treated with TR e-PTFE membrane filled with irradiated cancellous human bone. Of twelve beagle dogs, four control dogs and four test dogs without membrane exposure to oral cavity were sacrificed at 8 and 16 weeks respectively. The surgical sites were dissected out, fixed in 4% buffered formaldehyde, dyed using a Villanueva staining technique, and processed for embedding in plastic resin. The cutting and grinding methods were routinely processed for histologic and histomophometric analyis of exophytic bone formation as well as statistical analysis. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Exophytic bone formation in the both of experimental groups was increased respectively after surgery from 23.40% at 8 weeks to 46.26% at 16 weeks in the control groups, from 40.23% at 8 weeks to 47.11% at 16 weeks in the test groups(p<0.05). 2. At 8 weeks after surgery, exophytic bone formation was made 40.23% in the test groups and 33.40% in the control groups. Exophytic bone formation was significantly made in the test group more than in the control group. At 16 weeks after surgery, exophytic bone formation was made 44.11% in the test groups and 46.26% in the control groups. Exophytic bone formation was made in the test groups more than in the control groups, but there was no statistically significant differences. 3. The membrane was fixed with metal pins to closely contact it to the bone surface. So, collapse and deviation of the membrane could be prevented and in growth of connective tissue also could be blocked from the periphery of the membrane. On the basis of these findings, wee suggest that intraoral experimental model for exophytic bone formation may be effective to evaluate the effect of bone graft material. And it indicates that combined use of membrane and ICB graft material is more effective than use of membrane only for exophytic bone formation.
A data-based model, such as an AAKR model is widely used for monitoring the drifts of sensors in nuclear power plants. However, since a training dataset and a test dataset for a data-based model cannot be constructed with the data from all the possible states, the model uncertainty cannot be good enough to represent the uncertainty of estimations. In fact, the errors of estimation grow much bigger if the incoming data come from inexperienced states. To overcome this limitation of the model uncertainty, a new measure of uncertainty for a data-based model is developed and the predicted uncertainty is introduced. The predicted uncertainty is defined in every estimation according to the incoming data. In this paper, the AAKR model is used as a data-based model. The predicted uncertainty is similar in magnitude to the model uncertainty when the estimation is made for the incoming data from the experienced states but it goes bigger otherwise. The characteristics of the predicted model uncertainty are studied and the usefulness is demonstrated with the pressure signals measured in the flow-loop system. It is expected that the predicted uncertainty can quite reduce the false alarm by using the variable threshold instead of the fixed threshold.
Steel cylindrical tanks are widely used for the storage of hazardous substances of which leakage must be prevented under any circumstances. However, the dynamic response of the steel cylindrical liquid storage tank depends sensitively on the fluid-structure interaction and the vibration of the tank structure and necessitates clarification for the safety of the tank structure. This paper presents the results of shaking table tests performed to examine the dynamic behavior of a scaled cylindrical steel tank model considering the presence or not of fixed roof and added mass at the top of the tank for various fluid levels. The test results confirm the occurrence of both beam-type and oval-type vibration modes and show that the larger content of liquid inside the container amplified the acceleration along the height of the cylindrical tank. The oval-type vibration modes are seen to be more dominant in case of large water-to-structure mass ratio.
The objectives of the study were to estimate genetic parameters for milk production traits of Holstein cattle using random regression models (RRMs), and to compare the goodness of fit of various RRMs with homogeneous and heterogeneous residual variances. A total of 126,980 test-day milk production records of the first parity Holstein cows between 2007 and 2014 from the Dairy Cattle Improvement Center of National Agricultural Cooperative Federation in South Korea were used. These records included milk yield (MILK), fat yield (FAT), protein yield (PROT), and solids-not-fat yield (SNF). The statistical models included random effects of genetic and permanent environments using Legendre polynomials (LP) of the third to fifth order (L3-L5), fixed effects of herd-test day, year-season at calving, and a fixed regression for the test-day record (third to fifth order). The residual variances in the models were either homogeneous (HOM) or heterogeneous (15 classes, HET15; 60 classes, HET60). A total of nine models (3 orders of $polynomials{\times}3$ types of residual variance) including L3-HOM, L3-HET15, L3-HET60, L4-HOM, L4-HET15, L4-HET60, L5-HOM, L5-HET15, and L5-HET60 were compared using Akaike information criteria (AIC) and/or Schwarz Bayesian information criteria (BIC) statistics to identify the model(s) of best fit for their respective traits. The lowest BIC value was observed for the models L5-HET15 (MILK; PROT; SNF) and L4-HET15 (FAT), which fit the best. In general, the BIC values of HET15 models for a particular polynomial order was lower than that of the HET60 model in most cases. This implies that the orders of LP and types of residual variances affect the goodness of models. Also, the heterogeneity of residual variances should be considered for the test-day analysis. The heritability estimates of from the best fitted models ranged from 0.08 to 0.15 for MILK, 0.06 to 0.14 for FAT, 0.08 to 0.12 for PROT, and 0.07 to 0.13 for SNF according to days in milk of first lactation. Genetic variances for studied traits tended to decrease during the earlier stages of lactation, which were followed by increases in the middle and decreases further at the end of lactation. With regards to the fitness of the models and the differential genetic parameters across the lactation stages, we could estimate genetic parameters more accurately from RRMs than from lactation models. Therefore, we suggest using RRMs in place of lactation models to make national dairy cattle genetic evaluations for milk production traits in Korea.
