In the reliability-based design optimization of electromagnetic devices, the accurate and efficient reliability assessment method is very essential. The first-order sensitivity-assisted Monte Carlo Simulation is proposed in the former research. In order to improve its accuracy for wide application, in this paper, the second-order sensitivity analysis is presented by using the hybrid direct differentiation-adjoint variable method incorporated with the finite element method. By combining the second-order sensitivity with the Monte Carlo Simulation method, the second-order sensitivity-assisted Monte Carlo Simulation algorithm is proposed to implement reliability calculation. Through application to one superconductor magnetic energy storage system, its accuracy is validated by comparing calculation results with other methods.
In small signal stability analysis of power systems, eigenvalue analysis is the most useful method and the detailed modeling of generator has an important effect to the eigenvalues. Generator full model is used for precise dynamic analysis of generators and controllers while two-axis model is used for multi-machine systems because of the reduced order of the state matrix. Also, the eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients are used for optimizing controller parameters to improve system stability. This paper compare the first and second order eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients of controllers using generator full model with those of two-axis model. As a result of an example, the estimated eigenvalues using the first and the second eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients using generator full model is very close to those of state matrix. Also the error ratios throughout a wide range of controller parameters is less than $1\%$.

This paper discusses design sensitivity analysis and its application to a structural dynamics modification. Eigenvalue derivatives are determined with respect to the element parameters, which include intrinsic property parameters such as Young's modulus, density of the material, diameter of a beam element, thickness of a plate element, and shape parameters. Derivatives of stiffness and mass matrices are directly calculated by derivatives of element matrices. The first and the second order derivatives of the eigenvalues are then mathematically derived from a dynamic equation of motion of FEM model. The calculation of the second order eigenvalue derivative requires the sensitivity of its corresponding eigenvector, which are developed by Nelson's direct approach. The modified eigenvalue of the structure is then evaluated by the Taylor series expansion with the first and the second derivatives of eigenvalue. Numerical examples for simple beam and plate are presented. First, eigenvalues of the structural system are numerically calculated. Second, the sensitivities of eigenvalues are then evaluated with respect to the element intrinsic parameters. The most effective parameter is determined by comparing sensitivities. Finally, we predict the modified eigenvalue by Taylor series expansion with the derivatives of eigenvalue for single parameter or multi parameters. The examples illustrate the effectiveness of the eigenvalue sensitivity analysis for the optimization of the structures.
Design sensitivity analysis of the second order perturbed eigenproblems for random structural system is presented. Dynamic response of random system including uncertainties for the design variable is calculated with the first order and second order perturbation method to original governing equation. In optimal design methods, there is fundamental requirement for design gradients. A method for calculating the sensitivity coefficients is developed using the direct differentiation method for the governing equation and first order and second order perturbed equation.
Monitoring large-scale civil engineering structures such as offshore platforms and high-large buildings requires a large number of sensors of different types. Innovative sensor data information technologies are very extremely important for data transmission, storage and retrieval of large volume sensor data generated from large sensor networks. How to obtain the optimal sensor set and placement is more and more concerned by researchers in vibration-based SHM. In this paper, a method of determining the sensor location which aims to extract the dynamic parameter effectively is presented. The method selects the number and place of sensor being installed on or in structure by through the tolerance domain statistical inference algorithm combined with second order sensitivity technology. The method proposal first finds and determines the sub-set sensors from the theoretic measure point derived from analytical model by the statistical tolerance domain procedure under the principle of modal effective independence. The second step is to judge whether the sorted out measured point set has sensitive to the dynamic change of structure by utilizing second order characteristic value sensitivity analysis. A 76-high-building benchmark mode and an offshore platform structure sensor optimal selection are demonstrated and result shows that the method is available and feasible.
The bilinear formulation proposed earlier by Peters and Izadpanah to develop finite elements in time to solve undamped linear systems, Is extended (and found to be readily amenable) to develop time finite elements to obtain transient responses of both linear and nonlinear, and damped and undamped systems. The formulation Is used in the h-, p- and hp-versions. The resulting linear and nonlinear algebraic equations are differentiated to obtain the first- and second-order sensitivities of the transient response with respect to various system parameters. The present developments were tested on a series of linear and nonlinear examples and were found to yield, when compared with results obtained using other methods, excellent results for both the transient response and Its sensitivity to system parameters. Mostly. the results were obtained using the Legendre polynomials as basis functions, though. in some cases other orthogonal polynomials namely. the Hermite. the Chebyshev, and integrated Legendre polynomials were also employed (but to no great advantage). A key advantage of the time finite element method, and the one often overlooked in its past applications, is the ease In which the sensitivity of the transient response with respect to various system parameters can be obtained. The results of sensitivity analysis can be used for approximate schemes for efficient solution of design optimization problems. Also. the results can be applied to gradient-based parameter identification schemes.
This study is to obtain the order of the sensitivity of importing marine products with regard to non - economic aspects of considerations under the free - trade. Three criteria are extracted considering various aspects of Korean fishery society. They are the socio - economic, resource - environmental, and policy - appropriateness criterion. The Analytic Hierachy Process(AHP) is used to obtain the estimates of weights among these criteria. First of all, the weights between economic and non - economic in the first hierachy of sensitivity criteria turn out to be 83.3% and 16.7%. Second, the weights among three criteria in the non - economic aspect, the second hierachy, are following that the socio - economic criterion is 19.6%, resource - environmental 31.1%, and policy - appropriateness 49.3% respectively. 47 selected fishes are evaluated based on these three non - economic criteria using 9- point scales. The over - all order of sensitivity is a croaker, hairtail, flatfish, sea breams, and so forth in descending order. The least sensitive fish turns out to be an angler. In addition to the over - all order, the sensitivity based on the three specific non - economic aspects is also investigated. The most sensitive fish in terms of the socio - economic criterion is an hairtail while the least one is a filefish. The most sensitive fish in terms of the resource - environmental criterion is an abalone while the least one is an angler. Finally, the most sensitive fish in terms of the policy - appropriateness is a mackerel while the least one is a small octopus.

Two realigation procedures of any open-circuit transfer functions are presented through the use of genera1ized immitance converters composed of two operational amplifiers and passive elements. The fast precedure is to select the admittance conversion, h(s), to be k/s , and the second one to be k/s. The merit of the second procedure is the elimination of capacitors in passive networks, however, requires more CGIC's than the first. The second-order transfer function is realiged in the two methods under discussion to find that the sensitivity of Q factor and the undamped oscillation frequency to the variation of circuit elements. The first procedure proved to be favorable from the view point of sensitivities.
This paper presents a new method for first and second order eigen-sensitivity analysis of system matrix in augmented form. Eigen-sensitivity analysis provides invaluable informations in power system planning and operation. However, conventional eigen-sensitivity analysis methods, which need all the eigenvalues and eigenvectors, can not be applicable to large scale power systems due to large computer memory and computing time required. In the proposed method, all sensitivity computations for a mode are carried out using the augmented system matrix and its own eigenvalue and right & left eigenvectors. In other words sensitivity analysis for a mode does not need informations on the other eigenvalues and eigenvectors and sparsity technique can be fully utilized. Thus compuations can be done very efficiently with moderate computer memory and computing time even for large power systems. The proposed algorithm is tested for one machine infinite bus system.
This paper presents a number of verification case studies for a recently developed sensitivity/uncertainty code package. The code package, ROMUSE (Reduced Order Modeling based Uncertainty/Sensitivity Estimator) is an effort to provide an analysis tool to be used in conjunction with reactor core simulators, in particular the Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA) core simulator. ROMUSE has been written in C++ and is currently capable of performing various types of parameter perturbations and associated sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification, surrogate model construction and subspace analysis. The current version 2.0 has the capability to interface with the Design Analysis Kit for Optimization and Terascale Applications (DAKOTA) code, which gives ROMUSE access to the various algorithms implemented within DAKOTA, most importantly model calibration. The verification study is performed via two basic problems and two reactor physics models. The first problem is used to verify the ROMUSE single physics gradient-based range finding algorithm capability using an abstract quadratic model. The second problem is the Brusselator problem, which is a coupled problem representative of multi-physics problems. This problem is used to test the capability of constructing surrogates via ROMUSE-DAKOTA. Finally, light water reactor pin cell and sodium-cooled fast reactor fuel assembly problems are simulated via SCALE 6.1 to test ROMUSE capability for uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis purposes.
