  • The neural networks were able to be used by analyze fire source with the optical characteristics of smoke particles. The neural networks were learned the optical characteristics for three types test fire (paper, wood, flammable liquid). These test fires which were adopted in this study were also used to performance test of smoke detector according to UL268. A smoke chamber which was able to detect light extinction and scattering simultaneously was created. The optical characteristics of smoke particles were measured by the smoke chamber. And the results were used to input data for the neural networks. The neural networks distinguished the fire source accurately for paper fire, wood fire or flammable liquid fire. The neural networks distinguished accurately the combined fire source such as paper-wood fire, paper-flammable liquid fire or wood-flammable liquid fire.

  • We have derived the general transfer equation for governing the continuity, energy transfer, mass and momentum transfer, and turbulent energy dissipation rate within the fire compartment which has the 800t fire source at the center of the floor. The governing transfer equations have been descretized using the finite volume approach and numerically experimented under the SIMPLE algorithm. In order for the SIMPLE algorithm approach to be physically reliable, the test results are compared with those of Morita's SOR Method using Conjugate Residual Method and found to be close to physical values though the computational convergence time still remains to be upgraded. The treatment of source terms in the system of finite difference equations has been critical in order to converge the governing equations within the appropriate time steps. The criteria of convergence allowance for the whole domain have been checked and the sudden change of the non-linear effects from the source term have been avoided. The criteria has been allowed to be for 5$\times$10$^{-5}$ .

  • Fire experiments were conducted in a real scale room which is assumed to be a residential living room under the various opening conditions and locations of wood crib fire source to study on fire hazard before and after sprinkler activation. Concentrations of oxygen and carbon monoxide, smoke density, and temperature were measured to look into environmental conditions in a room of fire origin. The response time of residential sprinklers was also examined in relation to distance between sprinkler heads and a fire source.

  • This study is intended to understand flame behavior of the pool fire by height of fire source. Liquid fuels were methanol and n-Heptane which are used in many studies of pool fire. Size of vessel was $100mm{\times}100mm{\times}50mm$ and the vessel was made by stainless steel. Combustion time, mass loss rate, flame temperature, flame height and air entrainment rate from the outside to flame were measured, and flame behavior was visualized with video camera. Based on the experiment, it was found that combustion characteristics of pool fire was decreased according to increase of height of fire source because entrainment volume of relative cold air was increased from the outside to flame.

  • In Korea, The buildings are getting higher and bigger, and also the fire risk is getting increased. The PBD was introduced in 2009 for the fire safety of these buildings, but the study on making scenario based on actual case of fire is insufficient. Therefore on this study, it will conduct an experiment about initial fire classification and making fire scenario based on that actual fire statistic investigation classification of PBD buildings as official and commercial facilities.

  • In this study, the authors designed a reduced-scale railway vehicle fire, which was necessary for evaluating the fire safety of railway tunnels using a reduced model. To overcome the shortcomings of the methods used in conventional reduced-scale railway tunnel tests, the authors simulated the fire source of a railway vehicle using a methanol fire source for fire buoyancy, and a smoke cartridge for smoke visualization. Therefore, the heat release mass consumption rates of various methane trays were measured using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660). The critical ventilation velocity in the railway tunnels was obtained using the designed fire source of the railway vehicle, which was evaluated by the measured temperature at the top of the tunnel as well as laser visualization.

  • Accurate prediction of the fire-induced air velocity, temperature and smoke flow in underground utility tunnel becomes more important for the optimization of design and placement of heat and smoke detectors. In order to improve the safety of underground utility tunnel systems, the behaviors of fire-induced smoke flow and temperature distributions are investigated. Especially, two different cross-sectional shapes of tunnel, such as rectangular and circular types are modeled. Also, fire source is modeled as a volumetric heat source. Three-dimensional thermal-flow characteristics in an underground tunnel are solved by means of FVM using SIMPLE algorithm. The effects of shape geometry on the fire-induced flow characteristics are graphically depicted. It is desirable that heat and smoke detectors are installed on the cables and the top of the wall.

  • This study evaluated the fire detection performance of an automatic fire extinguishing system for road tunnels, which combines flame wavelength detection technology with flame image detection technology. This fusion technique to improve the fire detection capability can reduce the damage caused by the fire suppression by locating the fire source in the fire and discharging the pressurized water only at the fire source. Experiments were conducted to determine the position of a fire source when a $70cm{\times}70cm$ target was placed at a distance of 15 m, 20 m, 25 m, 30 m, and 35 m, respectively, in a situation where there is a flame and smoke in a tunnel. The performance of the ultraviolet and triple wavelength infrared (IR3) sensors was attenuated due to the interference of thick smoke. In addition when the flame was blocked by thick smoke, the image sensor sensed the smoke and emitted a fire signal.

  • The first operation of alarm system starts at a detector. And the largest effect is produced on the operation of detector by the fire source position and installation position. Nevertheless, the Korean standard for the installation of detector only specifies matters of fire detector installation according to area and height, without consideration of installation position and fire source position. Therefore, this study carried out a fire test in consideration of detector installation position and fire source position (5 places) in order to minimize casualties owing to the fast operation of fire detector when a fire occurred. Considering that it took the longest time for a detector close to a wall to work in the results of this test, it was possible to find that a minimum clearance to the wall was required.

  • This paper aims to evaluate the effects that presence, installation number and capacity of ventilation vent and presence of multiple fire sources have on the behaviour of smoke temperature induced by vehicle fire in road tunnel. Six types of scenarios were assumed and FDS was ran to simulate them. As the number of ventilation vents increases, the smoke temperature are calculated to be reduced, but it is shown that effects exerted by two ventilation vents are almost similar to ones by three ventilation vents. Capacity of ventilation vent has a greater impact on the reduction of smoke temperature than installation number of ventilation vents. Smoke temperatures computed for all scenarios except for scenario No. 1 (without ventilation vent) and scenario No. 6 (with multiple fire sources) above fire source are analyzed to be under $400^{\circ}C$ and it means that the radiation of smoke layer above fire source doesn't induce the ignition of materials around fire source.
