  • Although the finite element method has become an indispensible tool for the dynamic analysis of structures, difficulty remains to quantify the errors associated with discretization. To improve the modeling accuracy, this paper proposes a method to make a combined use of finite elements and exact dynamic elements. Exact interpolation functions for the Timoshenko beam element are derived using the exact dynamic element modeling (EDEM) and compared with interpolation functions of the finite element method (FEM). The exact interpolation functions are tested with the Laplace variable varied. A combined use of finite element method and exact interpolation functions is presented to gain more accurate mode shape functions. This paper also presents a combined use of finite elements and exact dynamic elements in design/reanalysis problems. Timoshenko flames with tapered sections are tested to demonstrate the design procedure with the proposed method. The numerical study shows that the combined use of finite element model and exact dynamic element model is very useful.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study free vibration analysis of thick plates resting on Winkler foundation using Mindlin's theory with shear locking free fourth order finite element, to determine the effects of the thickness/span ratio, the aspect ratio, subgrade reaction modulus and the boundary conditions on the frequency paramerets of thick plates subjected to free vibration. In the analysis, finite element method is used for spatial integration. Finite element formulation of the equations of the thick plate theory is derived by using higher order displacement shape functions. A computer program using finite element method is coded in C++ to analyze the plates free, clamped or simply supported along all four edges. In the analysis, 17-noded finite element is used. Graphs are presented that should help engineers in the design of thick plates subjected to earthquake excitations. It is concluded that 17-noded finite element can be effectively used in the free vibration analysis of thick plates. It is also concluded that, in general, the changes in the thickness/span ratio are more effective on the maximum responses considered in this study than the changes in the aspect ratio.

  • This paper is proposed to select the optimal finite element type in finite element analysis. Based on the NUREG reports, static analyses were performed using a commercial analysis program, $ABAQUS^{TM}$. In this study, we used a nonlinear kinematic hardening model proposed by Chaboche. The analysis result of solid elements by inputting the same material constants was different from the results of the NUREG report. This is resulted from the difference between shell element and solid element. Therefore, the material constants that have similar result to the experimental result were determined and compared according to element type. In case of using solid element for efficient finite element analysis, we confirmed that the use of C3D8I element type(incompatible mode 8-node linear brick element) leads the accurate result while reducing the analysis time.

  • In this study, a new smart beam finite element is proposed for the finite element modeling of the beam-type smart structure with bonded plate-type piezoelectric sensors and actuators. Constitutive equations far the direct piezoelectric effect and converse piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric materials are considered. By using the variational principle, the equations of motion for the smart beam finite element are derived. The presented 2-node beam finite element is isoparametric element based on Timoshenko beam theory. The validity of the proposed beam element is shown through comparing the analysis results of the verification examples with those of other previous researches. Therefore, by analyzing smart structures with smart beam finite elements, it is possible to simulate the control of the structural behavior by piezoelectric actuators with applied voltages and the monitoring of the structure behavior by piezoelectric sensors with sensed voltages.

  • Finite element method is a very effective method to simulate the forming processes with good prediction of the deformation behaviour. For the finite element modeling of sheet mental forming the accurate die model is required. Among finite element method, the static-implicit finite element method is applied effectively to analyze real-size auto-body panel stamping processes, which include the forming stage. This study is about analyzing the stamping process problems by using AutoForm commercial software which used static-implicit method. According to this study, the results of simulation will give engineers good information to access the die design of optimization.

The modulus of elasticity of signal cable and pneumatic hose is predicted by deflection test. Finite element model for the signal cable and pneumatic hose is developed by using the modulus of elasticity obtained from the tests. • When the temperature of a structure varies, there is a tendency to produce changes in the shape of the structure. The resulting actions may be of considerable importance in the analysis of the structures having non-prismatic members. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the modeling, analysis and behavior of the non-prismatic members subjected to temperature changes with the aid of finite element modeling. The fixed-end moments and fixed-end forces of such members due to temperature changes were computed through a comprehensive parametric study. It was demonstrated that the conventional methods using frame elements can lead to significant errors, and the deviations can reach to unacceptable levels for these types of structures. The design formulas and the dimensionless design coefficients were proposed based on a comprehensive parametric study using two-dimensional plane-stress finite element models. The fixed-end actions of the non-prismatic members having parabolic and straight haunches due to temperature changes can be determined using the proposed approach without necessitating a detailed finite element model solution. Additionally, the robust results of the finite element analyses allowed examining the sources and magnitudes of the errors in the conventional analysis.
