  • Finite element equations by using fast Fourier transformation were formulated for studying temperatures resulting from frictional heating in sliding systems. The equations include the effect of velocity of moving components. The program developed by using FFT-FEM that combines Fourier transform techniques and the finite element method, was applied to the sliding bearing system. Numerical prediction obtained by FFT-FEM was in an excellent agreement of experimental temperature measurements.

  • In this study, deformation analysis for solid-liquid coupled structure has been performed using explicit finite element program In order to model the behavior of liquid, SPH (Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics) algorithm was adopted. Crash test and simulation for the hydro-type impact energy absorber were given as an example of industrial application. The obtained good correlation between the test results and simulation reveals that the proposed method could be used effectively for the structural analysis of solid-liquid coupled problems

  • The finite element analysis (FEA) is widely used in modern structural dynamics because the performance of structure can be predicted in early stage. However, due to the difficulty in determination of various uncertain parameters, it is not easy to obtain a reliable finite element model. To overcome these difficulties, a updating program of FE model is developed by consisting of pretest, correlation and update. In correlation, it calculates modal assurance criteria, cross orthogonality, mixed orthogonality and coordinate modal assurance criteria. For the model updating, the continuum sensitivity analysis and design optimization tool(DOT) are used. The SENSUP program is developed for model updating giving physical parameter sensitivity. The developed program is applied to practical examples such as the BLDC spindle motor of HDD, and upper housing of induction motor. And the sensor placement for the square plate is compared using several methods.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element program for the analysis of orthogonal cutting process. Deformation of the workpiece material is considered as rigid-viscoplastic and the numerical solution is obtained from the coupled analysis bctween plastic deformation and temperature field, including treament of temperature dependent material properties. The chip and the burr formation are simulated for the non-steady state orthogonal cutting using the developed program. To validate the program the predicted results at chip and burr format~on stage are compared with the published ones. The case of isothermal cutting process is also considered to study the thermal effect on the machining process.

  • This paper is concerned with the numerical analysis of frictional contact problems in axisymmetric bodies using the rigid-plastic finite element method. A contact finite element method, based on a penalty function, are derived from variational formulations. The contact boundary condition between two deformable bodies is prescribed by the proposed algorithm. The program which can handle frictional contact problem is developed by using pre-existing rigid-plastic finite element code. Some examples used in this paper illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed formulations and algorithms. Efforts focus on the deformation patterns, contact force, and velocity gradient through the various simulations.

  • A finite element analysis for near-net-shape forming of Al6061 powder was performed under warm pressing. The advantages of warm compaction by rubber isostatic pressing were discussed to obtain parts with better density distributions. To simulate densification and deformed shape of a powder compact during warm pressing, the elastoplastic constitutive equation based on yield function of Shima-Oyane was implemented into a finite element program(ABAQUS). The hyperelastic constitutive equation based on the Ogden strain energy potential was employed to analyze nonlinear elastic response of rubber. Finite element results were compared with experimental data for Al6061 powder compacts under warm pressing.

  • A nodeless variables finite element method for analysis of two-dimensional, steady-state viscous incompressible flow is presented. The finite element equations are derived from the governing Navier-Stokes differential equations and a corresponding computer program is developed. The proposed method is evaluated by solving the examples of the lubricant flow in journal bearing and the flow in the lid-driven cavity. An adaptive meshing technique is incorporated to improve the solution accuracy and, at the same time, to reduce the analysis computational time. The efficiency of the combined adaptive meshing technique and the nodeless variables finite element method is illustrated by using the example of the flow past two fences in a channel.

  • This study was intended to computerize the structural analysis of two-dimensional continuum by finite element method, and to provide a preparatory basis for more sophisticated and more generalized computer programs of this kind. A computer program, applicable to any shape of two-dimensional continuum, was formulated on the basis of 16-degree-of- freedom rectangular element. Various computational aspects pertaining to the implementation of finite element method were reviewed and settled in the course of programming. The validity of the program was checked through several case studies. To assess the accuracy and the convergence characteristics of the method, the results computed by the program were compared with solutions by other methods, namely the analytical Navier's method and the framework method. Through actual programming and analysis of the computed results, the following facts were recognized; 1) The stiffness matrix should necessarily be assembled in a condensed form in order to make it possible to discretize the continuum into practically adequate number of elements without using back-up storage. 2) For minimization of solution time, in-core solution of the equilibrium equation is essential. LDLT decomposition is recommended for stiffness matrices condensed by the compacted column storage scheme. 3) As for rectangular plates, the finite element method shows better performances both in the accuracy and in the rate of convergence than the framework method. As the number of elements increases, the error of the finite element method approaches around 1%. 4) Regardless of the structural shape, there is a uniform tendency in convergence characteristics dependent on the shape of element. Square elements show the best performance. 5) The accuracy of computation is independent of the interpolation function selected.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns using inelastic finite element analysis. The accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process may be enhanced by the use of sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Damage index aims to provide a means of quantifying numerically the damage in reinforced concrete bridge columns sustained under earthquake loading. The proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of reinforced concrete bridge columns is verified by comparison with reliable experimental results.
