  • Purpose: This study aimed to comparatively evaluate the stress distribution of bones surrounding the implant system to which both titanium and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) abutments are applied using a three-dimensional finite element analysis. Methods: The three-dimensional implant system was designed by the computer-aided design program (CATIA; Dassault Systemes). The discretization process for setting nodes and elements was conducted using the HyperMesh program (Altair), after finishing the design of each structure for the customized abutment implant system. The results of the stress analysis were drawn from the Abaqus program (Dassault Systèmes). This study applied 200 N of vertical load and 100 N of oblique load to the occlusal surface of a mandibular first molar. Results: Under external load application, the PEEK-modeled dental implant showed the highest von Mises stress (VMS). The lowest VMS was observed in the Ti-modeled abutment screws. In all groups, the VMS was observed in the crestal regions or necks of implants. Conclusion: The bones surrounding the implant system to which the PEEK abutment was applied, such as the cortical and trabecular bones, showed stress distribution similar to that of the titanium implant system. This finding suggests that the difference in the abutment materials had no effect on the stress distribution of the bones surrounding implants. However, the PEEK abutments require mechanical and physical properties improved for clinical application, and the clinical application is thought to be limited.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on the heat of hydration of reinforced concrete with different steel ratio. And this study intends to determine the effect of the steel on the variation of temperatures during hydration. In order to do this, the thermal analyses of the pier-foundation models were carried out using the finite element analysis program, ADINA. As the steel rate increased, the maximum temperature and the internal-external temperature difference decreased.

  • Direct numerical simulation has been used to study turbulent boundary layers with convex curvature. A direct numerical simulation program has been developed to solve incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized coordinates with the finite volume method. We considered two boundary layer thicknesses. When the curvature effect is small, mean velocity statistics show little difference with those of a plane channel flow. Turbulent intensity decreases as curvature increases. Contours suggest that streamwise vorticities are strong where large pressure fluctuations exist.

  • Induction heating is a process that is accompanied with magnetic and thermal situation. When the high-frequency current flows in the coil, induced eddy current generates heat to conductor. To simulate an induction heating process, the finite element analysis program was developed. A coupling method between the magnetic and thermal routines was developed. In the process of magnetic analysis and thermal analysis, magnetic material properties and thermal material properties depending on temperature are taken into consideration. In this paper, to predict the angular deformation, temperature difference and the shape of heat affected zone were discussed. Also appropriate coil shape for maximum angular deformation were proposed.

  • We have developed an finite-difference time-domain program that can analyze photonic devices with gain and/or dispersion. As an example, a two-dimensional photonic-crystal laser is simulated. The simulation can show the relaxation oscillation behavior at extremely high current injection.

  • This paper analyzed the partial differential equations of laminated composite shells of revolution by using the finite difference method. The proof that numerical results are reasonable and accurate is obtained through converge ratio analysis and commercial program LUSAS for the structural analysis. The purpose of this study is to examine closely the engineering advantages and to analyze the structural behaviors of the anisotropic shells of revolution. Thus, the relevant reinforcement and most suitable arrangement of fiber to produce the highest strength are proposed through the numerical results according to a variety of parameter study. Namely, the distribution of displacements and stress resultants are analyzed according to the change of meridian's curvature, the ratio of height-width of shell, subtended angle, fiber angle, and so on. Using these distribution, the most suitable shell may be proposed to produce the highest strength. Also, the configuration of the entire laminated composite conical shells is analysed, and a variety of the design criterion of circular conical shell are proposed and studied in engineering view points.

  • The behavior of axially loaded pile was analyzed by two methodologies: one is the finite difference method using load transfer curves recommended by API(1993) , and the other is the numerical analysis using the FLAC program. From both analyses, load-displacement curves and load distributions along the depth were evaluated appropriately for the measured. The analysis using the FLAC could capture the nonlinearity of load-displacement curve even for unloading and reloading cases, since the unloaded stress paths of fill layer elements occurred on the failure envelop. Futhermore, the measured load transfer curves were compared with the API recommendations and with the calculations obtained front the results of the FLAC analysis for the interpretation of the transfer behavior between the soil and the pile under axial loadings. It was concluded that the atrial behavior of open ended piles at Pusan could be evaluated by both the finite difference analysis using API load transfer curves and the numerical analysis using FLAC.

  • A prediction of penetration and heat affected zone by using Finite Element Method in CO$_{2}$ Arc Welding has been discussed this paper. The temperature distribution of a base metal produced by the CO$_{2}$ arc welding processing is analyzed by using a three dimensional finite element model. The common finite element program ANSYS 4.4A was employed to obtain the numerical results. Temperature dependent material properties, effect of latent heat, and the convective boundary conditions are included in the model. Numerically predicted sizes of the penetration and the heat affected zone are compared with the experimentally observed values. As a result, there was a slight difference between numerical analysis values and experimentally observed values. For in the case of heat affected zone, it was not considered a precise forced convective coefficient value, and in the case of penetration, it was not, considered a arc force.

  • Deep drawing process for rectangular drawn section is different with that for axisymmetric circular one. Therefore deep drawing process for rectangular drawn section requires several intermediate steps to generate the final configuration without any significant defect. In this study, finite element analysis for multi-stage deep drawing process for high precision rectangular cases is carried out especially for an extreme aspect ratio. The analysis is performed using rigid-plastic finite element method with an explicit time integration scheme of the commercial program, LS-DYNA3D. The sheet blank is modeled using eight-node continuum brick elements. The results of analysis show that the irregular contact condition between blank and die affects the occurrence of failure, and the difference of aspect ratio in the drawn section leads to non-uniform metal flow, which may cause failure. A series of experiments for multi-stage deep drawing process for the rectangular cases are conducted, and the deformation configuration and the thickness distribution of the drawn rectangular cases are investigated by comparing with the results of the numerical analysis. The numerical analysis with an explicit time integration scheme shows good agreement with the experimental observation.
