  • Objectives : This study was to investigate the effectiveness of cupping therapy on peripheral facial paralysis. Methods : We investigated 39 cases of patients with peripheral facial paralysis, and devided patients into two groups : We treated one group by complex oriental medical treatment with cupping therapy, and did the other group by complex oriental medical treatment without cupping therapy. To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment applied for two groups, we used gross grading system of House-Brackmann(HB score), Yanagihara's unweighed grading system(Y score) at baseline and final. Results : 1. In cupping group and non-cupping group, compared with baseline, at final, HB score was significantly decreased and Y score was significantly increased. 2. At final, cupping group showed significant decrease on HB score and significant increase on Y score compared with non-cupping group. Conclusions : Cupping therapy can be available for relieving symptoms related with peripheral facial paralysis.

  • This paper presents a method of score counting for computer Go that includes the consideration of stability, management of dead stones, and an algorithm for score counting. Thus, method for managing dead stones, filling all dames, and making additional moves is presented, along with a score-counting algorithm, where dames are defined as empty points that are not included in the area of a group, while additional moves are required for life when filling all the dames. In experiments using the final positions of 362 games, a mean error of 8.66, 5.96, and 4.15 was recorded for the score counting produced by the CGoban, HandTalk, and proposed methods, respectively. The proposed method was confirmed by experiments where it was success fully applied to the final positions.

  • In this study we aimed to evaluate the reduction in dimensionality of 20 linear type traits and more final score in 14,943 Holstein cows in Brazil using factor analysis, and indicate their relationship with longevity and 305 d first lactation milk production. Low partial correlations (-0.19 to 0.38), the medium to high Kaiser sampling mean (0.79) and the significance of the Bartlett sphericity test (p<0.001), indicated correlations between type traits and the suitability of these data for a factor analysis, after the elimination of seven traits. Two factors had autovalues greater than one. The first included width and height of posterior udder, udder texture, udder cleft, loin strength, bone quality and final score. The second included stature, top line, chest width, body depth, fore udder attachment, angularity and final score. The linear regression of the factors on several measures of longevity and 305 d milk production showed that selection considering only the first factor should lead to improvements in longevity and 305 milk production.

  • Objectives : This study was to compare the effect of moxibustion therapy on peripheral facial para- lysis according to location of acupoint. Methods : We investigated 41 cases of inpatients with Peripheral Facial Paralysis, and divided them into two groups, One group was treated by moxibustion on local point(ML), and the other was treated by moxibustion on distant point(MD). We evaluated the effect of moxibustion in each group by using Gross Grading System of House-Brackmann(HB score) and Yanagihara's Unweighed Grading System(Y score). Results : 1. In ML and MD, compared with baseline, at final, HB score was significantly decreased and Y score was significantly increased. 2. At final, ML showed significant decrease on HB score and significant increase on Y score compared with MD. Conclusions : These results suggested that ML should be more useful for improving symptoms related with peripheral facial paralysis than MD.

Results : 1. In acupuncture treatment group compared with baseline, at final, Ryodoraku score(F3) was significantly increased. 2. At final, acupuncture treatment group showed significant increase on Ryodoraku score(F3) score compared with non acupuncture treatment group. Conclusions : It is suggested that Ryodoraku score(F3) should be available for diagnosing kidney deficiency-induced chronic low back pain as a promising diagnostic index and a outcome measurement.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of surgical treatment in adolescent patients suffering from navicular stress fracture. Materials and Methods: A total of 11 adolescent patients aged 14 to 19, who underwent an operation for navicular stress fracture between 2005 and 2008 were recruited. Clinical outcomes were evaluated by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) midfoot score and visual analogue scale (VAS) score. Results: The mean VAS score before the operation was 7.7. A score of 2.9 was confirmed at final follow up after the operation. The mean final follow-up period was 22.1 months. There was a statistically significant improvement in the VAS score between before and after the operation (p=0.01), and similarly, the AOFAS score also showed an improvement, from 46.5 to 80.7 (p=0.01). The pain that remained after the operation, according to the VAS score, was severe in three patients (27.3%), tolerable in seven patients (63.6%), and free of pain in one patient (9.1%). Conclusion: In navicular stress fracture in adolescents, careful selection of patients who could benefit from surgical treatment is recommended.

  • Objectives : This study was to evaluate the effectiveness of manipulation complex therapy on ankle sprain with ankle pain. Methods : We divided ankle sprain with ankle pain patient into 2 groups; one group combined manipulation therapy and acupuncture therapy, another group was only acupuncture therapy. To estimate the efficacy of treatment that applied for two groups, we used visual analog scale(VAS) and ankle-hindfoot scale(AHS). We compared the VAS score and AHS score of two groups statistically. Results : 1. As a result of evaluation by using visual analog scale(VAS) and ankle-hindfoot scale(AHS), treatment score at final was marked more higher than score before treatment on each groups. 2. treatment at final, acupuncture and manipulation therapy group had significant result on visual analog scale(VAS) and ankle-hindfoot scale(AHS) compared with acupuncture therapy group. Conclusions : Manipulation therapy can be used with acupuncture therapy for highly effective treatment for ankle sprain with ankle pain.
