  • In this paper, we evaluate the performance of a moving average (MA) channel estimation filter when space-time block coding transmit diversity (STBC-TD) is applied to the wideband direct sequence code division multiple access (WCDMA) forward link. And we present the infinite impulse response (IIR) filter scheme that can reduce the required memory buffer and the channel estimation delay time. This paper also compares the performance between MA filter scheme and IIR filter scheme in various Rayleigh fading channel environments through the bit error rate (BER) and the frame error rate (FER). Extensive computer simulation results show that transmission with STBC-TD provides a significant gain in performance over no transmit diversity technique, particularly at pedestrian speeds. If STBC-TD technique is employed in the channel estimator based on MA filter, it provides considerable performance gains against Rayleigh fading and reduces the optimum filter tap number. Consequently, the channel estimation delay time and the complexity of the receiver are reduced. In addition, the channel estimator based on IIR filter has the advantages such as little memory requirement and no delay time compared to the MA scheme. However, IIR filter coefficients is very sensitive to the mobile speed change and it exerts a serious influence upon the performance. For that reason, it is important to set uP the optimum IIR filter coefficients.

  • This paper proposes a design of the three-parallel converter system and grid-connection technique for a PMSG based wind turbine systems. The back-to-back converter of the PMSG based wind turbine system is directly connected to the grid so that both the power devices and the filters are needed to have large power ratings. The three-parallel converter configuration can reduce the required power ratings of the devices and filters. However, the three-parallel converter can cause circulating currents. These circulating currents can be suppressed by sellecting proper inner inductance at each leg. An LCL filter design is used to meet the THD regulations. The latent resonance caused by the LCL filter is compensated by an active damping method without additional loss. The decline of the power quality caused by the unbalanced and distorted grid voltages is also compensated with an additional compensation algorithm. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed system and compensation methods are effective for the wind turbine systems.

  • In this paper, we proposed image enhancement method using sharpening filter for improving the accuracy of object detection using the existing Grabcut algorithm. GrabCut algorithm is the excellent performance extracting an object within a rectangular window range, but it has the drawback of the inferior performance in image with no clear distinction between background and objects. So, in this paper, reinforcing the brightness and clarity through histogram equalization, and tightening the border of the object using the sharpening filter look better than that extracted result of existing GrabCut algorithm in a similar image of the object and the background. Based on improved Grabcut algorithm, it is possible to obtain an improved result in the image processing convergence technique of character recognition, real-time object tracking and so on.

  • Adaptive back stepping control technique may provide robust control characteristics under parameter perturbation caused by changing external condition. In order to synthesize a high-precision velocity controller for IPMSM(Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) using this method, the period of control loop should be very small. However, because of the resolution of the encoder for speed measurement, control cycle is limited, which makes it difficult to improve the performance of the controller. This paper proposes a velocity controller design method based on nonlinear adaptive back-stepping method to accomplish fast and accurate performance. Here, an EKF(Extended Kalman Filter) method is incorporated for the estimation of the motor speed into the design of a speed controller using adapted back-stepping control technique. The performance of the proposed controller is demonstrated through simulation using PSIM.

  • Interest about social security has recently increased in favor of safety for infrastructure. In addition, advances in computer vision and pattern recognition research are leading to video-based surveillance systems with improved scene analysis capabilities. However, such video surveillance systems, which are controlled by human operators, cannot actively cope with dynamic and anomalous events, such as having an invader in the corporate, commercial, or public sectors. For this reason, intelligent surveillance systems are increasingly needed to provide active social security services. In this study, we propose a core technique for intelligent surveillance system that is based on swarm robot technology. We present techniques for invader enclosing using swarm robots based on multiple distributed object environment. The proposed methods are composed of three main stages: location estimation of the object, specified object tracking, and decision of the cooperative behavior of the swarm robots. By using particle filter, object tracking and location estimation procedures are performed and a specified enclosing point for the swarm robots is located on the interactive positions in their coordinate system. Furthermore, the cooperative behaviors of the swarm robots are determined via the result of path navigation based on the combination of potential field and wall-following methods. The results of each stage are combined into the swarm robot-based invader-enclosing technique on multiple distributed object environments. Finally, several simulation results are provided to further discuss and verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

  • FastSLAM which uses the Rao-Blackwellized particle filter is one of the famous solutions to SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) problem that estimates concurrently a robot's pose and surrounding environment. However, the particle depletion problem arises from the loss of the particle diversity in the resampling process of FastSLAM. Then, the performance of FastSLAM degenerates over the time. In this work, DIR (Density Information-based Resampling) technique is proposed to solve the particle depletion problem. First, the cluster is constructed based on the density of each particle, and the density of each cluster is computed. After that, the number of particles to be reserved in each cluster is determined using a linear method based on the distance between the highest density cluster and each cluster. Finally, the resampling process is performed by rejecting the particles which are not selected to be reserved in each cluster. The performance of the DIR proposed to solve the particle depletion problem in FastSLAM was verified in computer simulations, which significantly reduced both the RMS position error and the feature error.

  • In this study, we examine the applicability of an artificial neural network(ANN) for filtering underwater random noise and for identifying underlying signals taken from noisy environment. The approach is to find a way of compressing the input data and then decompressing it using an ANN as in image compressing process. It is well known that random signal is hard to compress while ordered information is not. The use of a limited number of processing elements(PEs) in the hidden layer of an Ann ensures that some of the noise would be removed in the reconstruction process. Two types of the signals, synthesized and measured, are used to examine the effectiveness of the ANN-based filter. After training process is completed, the ANN successfully extracts the underlying signals form the synthesized or measured noisy signals. In particular, compared with the results form without filtering or moving averaged, the ANN-based filter gives much better spectrograms to identify underlying signals from the measured noisy data. This filtering process is achieved without using and kind of highly accurate signal processing technique. More experimentation needs to be followed to develop the ANN-based filtering technique to the level of complete understanding.

  • One of the most difficult problem of designing VLSI is a mixed-circuit design, that is to design circuit containing both analog parts and digital parts. Digital to analog converter and analog to digital converter is a typical case. Especially it can be a serious problem when mixed circuit are put into a large digital circuit like microcontroller. However nowadays this problem is settled by separating analog circuit parts outside the IC. This technique is based on converting a digital signal into a pulse sequence. Then an analog signal is obtained by averaging this pulse sequence at the external low-pass filter. An anlog to digital converter is designed using a stochastic logic instead of a traditional PWM (pulse-width modulation) signal and ins implemente dusing FPGa. Stochastic pulse sequence can be made as a simple circuits and moreover can be mathematically processed by simple circuits -AND gates. The spectral property of stochastic pulse sequence method is better than that of PWM method. So it make easy to design a external low-pass filter. This technique has important advantages, especially the reduction of the ADC cost.

  • In this paper, we present an efficient instruction set architecture using vector register file hardware to accelerate operation of general matrix-vector operations in DSP microprocessor. The technique enables in-situ row-access as well as column access to the register files. It can reduce the number of memory access significantly. The technique is especially useful for block-based video signal processing kernels such as FFT/IFFT, DCT/IDCT, and two-dimensional filtering. We have applied the new instruction set architecture to in-loop deblocking filter processing in H.264 decoder. Performance comparisons show that the required load/store operations for the in-loop deblocking filter can be reduced about 42%. The architecture would improve the processing speed, and code density in DSP microprocessor especially for video signal processing substantially.

  • Non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) gas sensors typically use an optical filter that transmits a discriminating 4.26 ㎛ wavelength band to measure carbon dioxide (CO2), as CO2 absorbs 4.26 ㎛ infrared. The filter performance depends on the transmittance and full width at half maximum (FWHM). This paper presents the fabrication, sensitivity, and selectivity characteristics of a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR)-based Fabry-Perot filter with a simple structure for CO2 detection. Each Ge and SiO2 films were prepared using the RF magnetron sputtering technique. The transmittance characteristics were measured using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The fabricated filter had a peak transmittance of 59.1% at 4.26 ㎛ and a FWHM of 158 nm. In addition, sensitivity and selectivity experiments were conducted by mounting the sapphire substrate and the fabricated filter on an NDIR CO2 sensor measurement system. When measuring the sensitivity, the concentration of CO2 was observed in the range of 0-10000 ppm, and the selectivity was measured for environmental gases of 1000 ppm. The fabricated filter showed lower sensitivity to CO2 but showed higher selectivity with other gases.
