  • Vanadium dioxide is a well-known metal-insulator phase transition material. Lots of researches of vanadium redox flow batteries have been researched as large scale energy storage system. In this study, vanadium oxide($VO_x$) thin films were applied to cathode for lithium ion battery. The $VO_x$ thin films were deposited on Si substrate($SiO_2$ layer of 300 nm thickness was formed on Si wafer via thermal oxidation process), quartz substrate by RF magnetron sputter system for 60 minutes at $500^{\circ}C$ with different RF powers. The surface morphology of as-deposited $VO_x$ thin films was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The crystallographic property was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The optical properties were characterized by UV-visible spectrophotometer. The coin cell lithium-ion battery of CR2032 was fabricated with cathode material of $VO_x$ thin films on Cu foil. Electrochemical property of the coin cell was investigated by electrochemical analyzer. As the results, as increased of RF power, grain size of as-deposited $VO_x$ thin films was increased. As-deposited thin films exhibit $VO_2$ phase with RF power of 200 W above. The transmittance of as-deposited $VO_x$ films exhibits different values for different crystalline phase. The cyclic performance of $VO_x$ films exhibits higher values for large surface area and mixed crystalline phase.

  • The pristine fluorine-doped $SnO_2$ (abbreviated as FTO) inverse opal (IO) was developed using a 410 nm polystyrene bead template. The nanolayered copper tungsten oxide ($CuWO_4$) was decorated on the FTO IO film using a facile electrochemical deposition, subsequently followed by annealing at $500^{\circ}C$ for 90 min. The morphologies, crystalline structure, optical properties and photoelectrochemical characteristics of the FTO and $CuWO_4$-decorated FTO (briefly denoted as $FTO/CuWO_4$) IO film were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, showing FTO IO in the hexagonally closed-pack arrangement with a pore diameter and wall thickness of about 300 nm and 20 nm, respectively. Above this film, the $CuWO_4$ was electrodeposited by controlling the cycling number in cyclic voltammetry, suggesting that the $CuWO_4$ formed during 4 cycles (abbreviated as $CuWO_4$(4 cycles)) on FTO IO film exhibited partial distribution of $CuWO_4$ nanoparticles. Additional distribution of $CuWO_4$ nanoparticles was observed in the case of $FTO/CuWO_4$(8 cycles) IO film. The $CuWO_4$ layer exhibits triclinic structure with an indirect band gap of approximately 2.5 eV and shows the enhanced visible light absorption. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) behavior was evaluated in the 0.5 M $Na_2SO_4$ solution under solar illumination, suggesting that the $FTO/CuWO_4$(4 cycles) IO films exhibit a photocurrent density ($J_{sc}$) of $0.42mA/cm^2$ at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE, denoted as $V_{RHE}$), while the FTO IO and $FTO/CuWO_4$(8 cycles) IO films exhibited a $J_{sc}$ of 0.14 and $0.24mA/cm^2$ at $1.23V_{RHE}$, respectively. This difference can be explained by the increased visible light absorption by the $CuWO_4$ layer and the favorable charge separation/transfer event in the cascading band alignment between FTO and $CuWO_4$ layer, enhancing the overall PEC performance.

  • A depth-encoding detector module with silicon photomultipliers(SiPMs) using two layers of scintillation crystal array was designed, and the position measurement capability was verified using DETECT2000. The depth of interaction of the crystal pixels with the gamma rays was tracked through the image acquired with the combination of surface treatment of the crystal pixels and reflectors. The bottom layer was treated as a reflector except for the optically coupled surfaces, and the crystals of top layer were optically coupled each other except for the outer surfaces so that the light sharing was made easier than the bottom layer. Flood images were obtained through the combination of specular reflectors and random reflectors, grounded and polished surfaces of crystal pixels, and the positions at which layer images were generated were measured and analyzed. The images were reconstructed using the Anger algorithm, whose the SiPM signals were reduced as the 16-channels to 4-channels. In the combination of the grounded surface and all reflectors, the depth positions were discriminated into two layers, whereas it was impossible to separate the two layers in the all polished surface combinations. Therefore, using the combination of grounded surface crystal pixels and reflectors could improve the spatial resolution at the outside of the field of view by measuring the depth position in preclinical positron emission tomography.

  • Lacquer is one of the most widely used natural resin in East Asia since Neolithic Age. As a major ingredient of lacquerware, lacquer is waterproof, insect-proof and rot-proof to be durable and anti-abrasion, generally utilized for mainly painting purpose. According to lacquerware excavated from several sites of Japan and China, lacquerware seems to appear in Neolithic Age. On the other hand in case of excavation research in Korea, lacquerwares are found after the Bronze Age. The initial purpose of lacquer is estimated to be adhesive, regarding the literatures mentioning bitumen(Yeoksceong ), animal glue(Kyeo) and egg alumen(Nanbaek). Especially piece of jar coffin unearthed in Pyeongtaek Daechu-ri site had trace of restoration by lacquer and hemp as an evidence of lacquer for adhesion in Pre-Three Kingdoms period. Since then a trend to restore the broken ceramics with lacquer and decorate with golden foil lasted especially in Joseon Dynasty. In the field of gold plated lacquer method, mother-of-pearl inlaying technique for lacquerware and restoration of buildings, lacquer is still used as adhesive. Due to matter of reversibility lacquer is being avoided for conservation and restoration of cultural heritage. Lacquer as a traditional material for adhesive since ancient times, however, has advantage in adhesion strength and durability. Because synthetic resin adhesive has problem of emission of volatile organic compounds and aging over time, lacquer receives attention recently. On the contrary, by combination adhesive from mixing lacquer and animal glue, already proved the possibility of applicability and chemical modification. A research to utilize lacquer as modern paint or functional material is also conducted continuously also in China and Japan. To put traditional material into practical use and modernize, chemical research from the molecular level of the lacquer is necessary in the near future.

  • Metal oxide nanostructures are promising materials for advanced applications, such as high sensitive gas sensors, and high capacitance lithium-ion batteries. In this study, tin oxide (SnO) nanostructures were grown on a Si wafer substrate using a two-zone horizontal furnace system for a various substrate temperatures. The raw material of tin dioxide ($SnO_2$) powder was vaporized at $1070^{\circ}C$ in an alumina crucible. High purity Ar gas, as a carrier gas, was flown with a flow rate of 1000 standard cubic centimeters per minute. The SnO nanostructures were grown on a Si substrate at $350{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ under 545 Pa for 30 minutes. The surface morphology of the as-grown SnO nanostructures on Si substrate was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Raman spectroscopy was used to confirm the phase of the as-grown SnO nanostructures. As the results, the as-grown tin oxide nanostructures exhibited a pure tin monoxide phase. As the substrate temperature was increased from $350^{\circ}C$ to $424^{\circ}C$, the thickness and grain size of the SnO nanostructures were increased. The SnO nanostructures grown at $450^{\circ}C$ exhibited complex polycrystalline structures, whereas the SnO nanostructures grown at $350^{\circ}C$ to $424^{\circ}C$ exhibited simple grain structures parallel to the substrate.

  • Organic dye-doped silica nanoparticles are used as a promising nanomaterials for bio-labeling, bio-imaging and bio-sensing. Fluorescent silica nanoparticles(NPs) have been synthesized by the modified $St{\ddot{o}}ber$ method. In this study, dye-free fluorescent silica NPs of various sized were synthesized by Sol-Gel process as the modified $St{\ddot{o}}ber$ method. The functional material of APTES((3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane) was added as an additive during the Sol-Gel process. The as-synthesized silica NPs were calcined at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The surface morphology and particle size of the as-synthesized silica NPs were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy. The fluorescent characteristics of the as-synthesized silica NPs was confirmed by UV lamp irradiation of 365 nm wavelength. The photoluminescence (PL) of the as-synthesized silica NPs with different size was analyzed by fluorometry. As the results, the as-synthesized silica NPs exhibits same blue fluorescent characteristics for different NPs size. Especially, as increased of the silica NPs size, the intensity of PL was decreased. The blue fluorescence of dye-free silica NPs was attributed to linkage of $NH_2$ groups of the APTES layer and oxygen-related defects in the silica matrix skeleton.

  • Palladium (Pd) is widely used as a catalyst and noxious gas sensing materials. Especially, various researches of Pd based hydrogen gas sensor have been studied due to the noble property, Pd can be adsorbed hydrogen up to 900 times its own volume. In this study, palladium oxide (PdO) nanostructures were grown on Si substrate ($SiO_2(300nm)/Si$) for 3 to 5 hours at $230^{\circ}C{\sim}440^{\circ}C$ using thermal chemical vapor deposition system. Pd powder (source material) was vaporized at $950^{\circ}C$ and high purity Ar gas (carrier gas) was flown with the 200 sccm. The surface morphology of as-grown PdO nanostructures were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM). The crystallographic properties were confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. As the results, the as-grown nanostructures exhibit PdO phase. The nano-cube structures of PdO were synthesized at specific substrate temperatures and specific growth duration. Especially, PdO nano-cube structrures were uniformly grown at $370^{\circ}C$ for growth duration of 5 hours. The PdO nano-cube structures are attributed to vapor-liquid-solid process. The nano-cube structures of PdO on graphene nanosheet can be applied to fabricate of high sensitivity hydrogen gas sensor.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the corrosion behaviors of dental implant alloy after microsized surface modification in electrolytes containing Mn ion. Materials and Methods: $Mn-TiO_2$ coatings were prepared on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy for dental implants using a plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method carried out in electrolytes containing different concentrations of Mn, namely, 0%, 5%, and 20%. Potentiodynamic method was employed to examine the corrosion behaviors, and the alternatingcurrent (AC) impedance behaviors were examined in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5^{\circ}C{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ using a potentiostat and an electrochemical impedance spectroscope. The potentiodynamic test was performed with a scanning rate of $1.667mV\;s^{-1}$ from -1,500 to 2,000 mV. A frequency range of $10^{-1}$ to $10^5Hz$ was used for the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The amplitude of the AC signal was 10 mV, and 5 points per decade were used. The morphology and structure of the samples were examined using field-emission scanning electron microscopy and thin-film X-ray diffraction. The elemental analysis was performed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Result: The PEO-treated surface exhibited an irregular pore shape, and the pore size and number of the pores increased with an increase in the Mn concentration. For the PEO-treated surface, a higher corrosion current density ($I_{corr}$) and a lower corrosion potential ($E_{corr}$) was obtained as compared to that of the bulk surface. However, the current density in the passive regions ($I_{pass}$) was found to be more stable for the PEO-treated surface than that of the bulk surface. As the Mn concentration increased, the capacitance values of the outer porous layer and the barrier layer decreased, and the polarization resistance of the barrier layers increased. In the case of the Mn/Ca-P coatings, the corroded surface was found to be covered with corrosion products. Conclusion: It is confirmed that corrosion resistance and polarization resistance of PEO-treated alloy increased as Mn content increased, and PEO-treated surface showed lower current density in the passive region.

  • In this paper, Mg-doped AlN epilayers for power semiconductor devices are grown by mixed-source hydride vapor phase epitaxy. Magnesium is used as p-type dopant material in the grown AlN epilayer. The AlN epilayers on the GaN-templated sapphire substrate and GaN-templated-patterned sapphire substrate (PSS), respectively, as the base substrates for device application, were selectively grown. The surface and the crystal structures of the AlN epilayers were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and high-resolution-X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD). From the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectra results, the p-type AlN epilayers grown by using the mixed-source HVPE method could be applied to power devices.

  • Metal oxide/graphene composites have been known as promising functional materials for advanced applications such as high sensitivity gas sensor, and high capacitive secondary battery. In this study, tin dioxide ($SnO_2$) nanostructures were grown on chemically synthesized graphene nanosheets using a two-zone horizontal furnace system. The large area graphene nanosheets were synthesized on Cu foil by thermal chemical vapor deposition system with the methane and hydrogen gas. Chemically synthesized graphene nanosheets were transferred on cleaned $SiO_2$(300 nm)/Si substrate using the PMMA. The $SnO_2$ nanostuctures were grown on graphene nanosheets at $424^{\circ}C$ under 3.1 Torr for 3 hours. Raman spectroscopy was used to estimate the quality of as-synthesized graphene nanosheets and to confirm the phase of as-grown $SnO_2$ nanostructures. The surface morphology of as-grown $SnO_2$ nanostructures on graphene nanosheets was characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). As the results, the synthesized graphene nanosheets are bi-layers graphene nanosheets, and as-grown tin oxide nanostructures exhibit tin dioxide phase. The morphology of $SnO_2$ nanostructures on graphene nanosheets exhibits complex nanostructures, whereas the surface morphology of $SnO_2$ nanostructures on $SiO_2$(300 nm)/Si substrate exhibits simply nano-dots. The complex nanostructures of $SnO_2$ on graphene nanosheets are attributed to functional groups on graphene surface.
