  • We present a new point-diffraction interferometer, which has been devised for the three-dimensional profile measurement of light scattering rough surfaces. The interferometer system has multiple sources of two-point-diffraction and a CCD camera composed of an array of two-dimensional photodetectors. Each diffraction source is an independent two-point-diffraction interferometer made of a pair of single-mode optical fibers, which are housed in a ceramic ferrule to emit two spherical wave fronts by means of diffraction at their free ends. The two spherical wave fronts then interfere with each other and subsequently generate a unique fringe pattern on the test surface. A He-Ne source provides coherent light to the two fibers through a 2${\times}$l optical coupler, and one of the fibers is elongated by use of a piezoelectric tube to produce phase shifting. The xyz coordinates of the target surface are determined by fitting the measured phase data into a global model of multilateration. Measurement has been performed for the warpage inspection of chip scale packages (CSPs) that are tape-mounted on ball grid arrays (BGAs) and backside profile of a silicon wafer in the middle of integrated-circuit fabrication process. When a diagonal profile is measured across the wafer, the maximum discrepancy turns out to be 5.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with a standard deviation of 1.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

  • In this paper, we present the roundness profile and run-out error measurement for a rotating shaft. The devices for measuring the roundness require a precision rotation table which is used as a reference to obtain the circular profile. Therefore, the roundness measuring system is expensive and requires precision manufacturing. The two-point method for succession measurement has been used to obtain a linear profile or used in straightness measurement using two displacement measuring devices. In this paper, the method is used for measuring the circular profile of a rotating shaft. A method to remove the vibration of the shaft, i.e., the run-out, is used, and the original circular profile is obtained from the measured raw data that excludes the run-out error of the rotating shaft. This method will be useful for obtaining the precise circular profile without using a precision reference circular artifact.

  • We constructed a TEA $N_2$ laser which consists of spark gap, pulse type high voltage power supply, Blumlein transmission line circuit, laser tube with Ernst electrode. We observed the self-preionization with an optical fiber in the spark gap and laser tube. The higher voltage power supplied to the Blumlein transmission line circuit, the better preionization was. An U-type transformer yielded better stability and output power than an I-type transformer. The discharge time after triggering a spark gap for the U-type transformer was also short. We obtained the stability of $2.7\%$ and output power of $36{\mu}J$ when the optimum conditions of the laser operation were spark gap distance of 6.0 mm, electrode distance in laser tube of 5.0 mm, $N_2$ gas flow rate in spark gap of 1500 cc/min, $N_2$ gas flow rate in laser tube of 4 ${\iota}$/min, output window reflectivity of $40\%$ and repetition rate of 10 Hz.

  • Ti-doped BSG (borosilicate glass) soot films on the silicone substrate have been deposited in the mixture of $SiCl_{4}$, TMB, $TiCL_{4}$ by flame hydrolysis deposition technique. The soot films are melted to form integrated fine glass films. We can fabricate thick films of serveral $10{\mu}m$ with deposition rate, more than $0.5{\mu}m$/min. Refractive index difference of BSG films are increased to more than 0.3% as function of the amount of Ti dopant. As a result of the process an optical waveguide which is simmilar with dimmension and refractive difference of optical fiber is produced. $BCl_{3}$ is widely used for B dopant, but we abtained the good results by the use of TMB in place of $BCl_{3}$. The melting point of silica soot glass is reduced to $1200^{\circ}C$ increasing B dopant. From FTIR analysis $B_2O_3$ content up to about lOmol% in BSG films. films.

  • We fabricated and characterized RWG-DFB-LDs emitting at $1.3\mu\textrm{m}$ wavelength. For fabrication of the laser diode, inteference fringe of optical beams was used for grating formation and epi layers were grown by LPE. The fablicated RWG-DFB-LD operated in a single longitudinal mode with more than 30 dB SMSR at 1296.5 nm emitting wavelength and its threshold current was 67 mA. Coupling coefficient (K) was estimated as $40cm^{-1}$ by means of stop-band measurement. Finally, we show that the RWG-DFB-LD fabricated in this experiment can be applicable as light source of 2.5 Gbps optical communication system from the fact that the small signal response of the RWG-DFB-LD rated up to 1.99 GHz at pre-bias level of $1.2 I_{th}$..

  • The structural dependence of the performance of an 1.55 $1.55{\mu}m$ InGaAsPIInGaAsP MQW electro-absorption modulator for highspeed digital fiber communication was systematically investigated. The effects of n-doped SCH region length $t_n$ as well as the general structure parameters including quantum well number $N_w$, well-thickness $t_w$, detuning wavelength $\Delta\lambda$, and device length L were thoroughly analyzed. Thereby, a high-pelfoIDlance electro-absorption modulator with device length L of $100{\mu}m$ was successfully designed. The designed structure showed excellent characteristics that have residual loss less than -1.5 dB, operational voltage from 0 V to -2V, and extinction ratios of -2.92 dB at $V_{\alpha}$=-1 V and -10 dB at $V_{\alpha}$=-2V.X>=-2V.

  • We have investigated the output characteristics of the 946 nm Nd:YAG laser which is longitudinally pumped by a fiber coupled laser diode. The temperature of a Nd:YAG crystal mount was kept constant by a controller with thermoelectric cooler. As a result, we measured more intense output at a low temperature, and then the maximum output power was measured to be 870 mW when the pumping power and the temperature were 9.95 W and $5^{\circ}C$, respectively. It appeared that output was decreased above 10 W pump power because of the thermal effects in gain medium.

  • This paper presents a simple but novel gain deviation detector scheme which can be used for general gain-clamping systems. By using the difference of ASEJprobe powers extracted from the edges of gain-flattened bandwidth, gain deviation of EDFA can be exactly detected regardless of the operating condition of a constructed EDFA. To prove the vahd1ty of the suggested scheme, we Implemented gain clamping systems on a single EDFA and cascaded EDFA's link and achieved sufficient gam-clamping performance without the elaborate measurement for tlIe determination of control parameters. eters.

  • To investigate the usefulness of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for imaging lymphedema, we directly compared it to other histological methods in a mouse model of lymphedema. We performed detailed imaging of the lymphedema lesion on a mouse tail. We imaged the mouse tail in vivo with OCT and created histopathological samples. We constructed a spectrometer-based OCT system using a fiber-optic Michelson interferometer. The light was directed to 50:50 couplers that split the light into reference and sample arms. Backscattered light from a reference mirror and the sample produced an interference fringe. An OCT image of the lymphedema model revealed an inflammatory reaction of the skin that was accompanied by edema, leading to an increase in the light attenuation in the dermal and subcutaneous layers. Similar to OCT image findings, histological biopsy showed an inflammatory response that involved edema, increased neutrophils in epidermis and subdermis, and lymphatic microvascular dilatation. Furthermore, the lymphedema model showed an increase in thickness of the dermis in both diagnostic studies. In the mouse tail model of lymphedema, OCT imaging showed very similar results to other histological examinations. OCT provides a quick and useful diagnostic imaging technique for lymphedema and is a valuable addition or complement to other noninvasive imaging tools.

  • We propose a novel metal-waveguide structure for sustaining long-range surface-plasmon-polaritons (LRSPP). The LRSPP waveguides are composed basically of two asymmetric metal layers: a very thin, finite-width metal strip on top of a metal slab with a dielectric gap in between them. Mode cut-off of LRSPPs excited on the double-metal waveguides is characterized by consistently investigating their dispersion relations and mode profiles. We also confirm experimentally the existence of low-loss, well-confined LRSPP modes by measuring far-field outputs emerging from an edge of the asymmetric double-metal waveguides. In the experiment, we have fabricated several types of SPP waveguide devices including straight lines, S-bend, and Y-branch consisting of gold strips (20 nm-thick, $5{\mu}m$-wide). Overall propagation loss of the proposed double-metal waveguides is quite comparable to that of single metal-strip waveguides, in addition the mode sizes can be tuned by increasing the core-insulator gap between the metal layers to get a higher coupling efficiency with a single-mode fiber in telecom wavelength. The proposed LRSPP waveguides may open up realization of SPP-waveguide sensors or nonlinear SPP-devices by replacing the core-insulator with a bio-fluid or a nonlinear medium.
