  • When the charged particle travels in transparent medium with a velocity greater than that of light in the same medium, the electromagnetic field close to the particle polarizes the medium along its path, and then the electrons in the atoms follow the waveform of the pulse which is called as Cerenkov light or radiation. This type of radiation can be easily observed in a spent fuel storage pit. In optical fibers, the Cerenkov light also can be generated due to their dielectric components. Accordingly, the radiation-induced light signals can be obtained using optical fibers without any scintillating material. In this study, to measure the intensities of Cerenkov radiation induced by gamma-rays, we have fabricated the fiber-optic Cerenkov radiation sensor system using silica optical fibers, plastic optical fibers, multi-anode photomultiplier tubes, simulated spent fuel assembly and a scanning system. To characterize the Cerenkov radiation generated in optical fibers, the intensities of Cerenkov radiation generated in the silica and plastic optical fibers were measured. Also, we measured the longitudinal distribution of gamma rays emitted from the Ir-192 isotope by using the fiber-optic Cerenkov radiation sensor system and simulated spent fuel assembly.

  • Chattering in cutting operations are usually a cumbersome part of the manufacturing process in mechanical. Particular, machining performance such as that of the boring process is limited by cutting condition at the movable components. Among various sources of chatter vibration, detrimental point in cutting condition is found a mechanical condition on overhang. It limits cutting speed, depth, surface roughness and tool wear failure as result because the all properties are varying with the metal removal process. In this case, we have to observe the resonance frequencies of a boring bar for continuous cutting. In the established research, boring bar vibration of cutting system has been measured with the aid of accelerometer. However, the inherent parameters of internal turning operations are severely limit for the real time monitoring on accelerometers. At this point, this paper is proposed other method for real time monitoring during continuous cutting with optical fiber at the inside of boring bar. This method has been used a plastic fiber in the special jig on boring bar by based on experimental modal analysis. In this study, improvement of monitoring system on continuous internal cutting was attempted using optical fiber sensor of inside type because usually chattering is investigated experimentally measuring the variation in chip thickness. It is demonstrated that the optical fiber sensor is possibility to measure of chattering with real time in boring process.

  • As global issues and interest in the environment increase, the transition to eco-friendly materials is accelerating in the automobile industry. In the automotive industry, eco-friendly composite materials are mainly used in various interior and exterior components, reducing the reliance on traditional petroleum-based materials. In particular, natural fiber composites help reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by making vehicles lighter. Additionally, they boast superior thermal properties and durability compared to non-recyclable composite materials, making them suitable for automotive interior parts. Furthermore, reduced production costs and sustainability are key advantages of natural fiber composites. The eco-friendly composites market is expected to grow to $86.43 billion at a CAGR of 15.3% from 2022 to 2030, and the natural fiber composites market is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 5.3% from 2023 to 2028 to $424 million. In this review paper, we explore research trends in nextgeneration natural fiber composite materials for automobiles and their application in the actual automobile industry.

  • We report effcient cascaded Raman generation and signal amplification at 1.3.mu.m achieved in a ring resonator constructed solely from fiber components, i.e. fusion WDM couplers. Low-loss single-mode fiber with moderate $GeO_2$ content (18 mole %) is used as an active medium and pumped by a Nd:YAG laser at 1.064.mu.m. In a resonant cascaded geometry, this generates the third Stokes line at 1.24.mu.m, which acts as a pump for signal wavelength around 1.3.mu.m. A DFB laser operating at 1.315.mu.m is used to provide an input signal. An output signal powers up to 20 dBm (100 mW) with a 28 dB Raman gain are attained, where the Nd:YAG pump power is 3.4 W. It is also shown experimentally that it is important to use optical filters to suppress feedback from the resonator, permitting high Raman gain and good signal quality.

  • Three stages of growth of Italian ryegrass (pre-blooming, P-B; early-blooming, E-B; and late-blooming, L-B) were used to evaluate the effect of maturity on in vitro digestion of dry matter, fiber components and gas production. The rumen digestibility and gas production values were obtained by incubation of each sample in the rumen fluid of sheep for 12, 24, 36, 48 and 72 hr, respectively. The results showed that digestibility of dry matter (DM) significantly reduced (p < 0.05) as advancing maturity of the grass. Similarly, the digestibility of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) also significantly decreased (p < 0.05) with advancing maturity at all incubation times. However, the effect of maturity on digestibility of cellulose and hemicellulose was only detected when the samples were incubated more than 36 hr, where L-B was lower than P-B and E-B. Potential digestibility of nutrients, the maximum digestibility attainable in the rumen theoretically, was also higher at P-B than those of E-B and L-B. The amount of gas produced by microbial fermentation was closely related to the extent of DM digestion, and it was negatively correlated with advancing maturity of the grass.

  • Many studies have presented results about the antioxidative and antimicrobial activities of Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale). There has yet to be a study which makes comparisons of nutrients based on the parts of the Dandelion. To identify the nutrient composition by part of dandelion, nutrient contents were analyzed. Dandelions were taken from Songpa-gu in Seoul and the nutrient composition of the flower, leaf and root were measured. The nutrient content of each part was analysed by using the method developed by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC). The proximate components(moisture, protein, fat, fiber, ash, and carbohydrates), minerals and vitamins of the dandelion were analysed. The nutrient composition of the dandelions showed many significant differences among the parts when the differences were determined by using Duncan's multiple range test. The leaf contains more protein, ash, Ca, K, Mg, Zn, vitamin A, B$_1$, B$_2$, and C than the other parts. The root has much more fiber, carbohydrate, P and Fe content. The results demonstrate that dandelions could be used as a food source supplement for fiber, Ca, Fe and vitamin B$_2$ which are common nutritional deficiencies in Korea. It is recommended that more research for other bio-functional factors besides nutrients composition is needed to enhance the utilization of the dandelion.

  • Fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPs) are being increasingly used for a wide range of engineering applications owing to their high specific strength and stiffness. However, their through-the-thickness performance lacks some of the most demanding physical and mechanical property requirements for structural applications, such as aerospace vehicles and military components. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs), due to their excellent mechanical, thermal and electrical properties, offer great promise to improve the weak properties in the thickness direction and impart multi-functionality without substantial weight addition to FRPs. This paper reviews the progress made to date on i) the techniques developed for integration of CNTs/ CNFs into FRPs, and ii) the effects of the addition of these nanofillers on the interlaminar properties, such as such interlaminar shear strength, interlaminar fracture toughness and impact damage resistance and tolerance, of FRPs. The key challenges and future prospects in the development of multiscale CNT-FRP composites for advanced applications are also highlighted.

  • A simple dispersion measurement technique has been demonstrated by using a self-seeding laser oscillation of a Fabry-Perot laser through a closed loop. The optical pulses of different wavelengths emitted from the Fabry-Perot laser travel down an optical fiber and the group velocity difference between the pulses due to the chromatic dispersion of the optical fiber is measured through the self-seeding laser oscillation process. The dispersion parameter of the optical fiber is calculated from the measured group velocity difference. The performance of the proposed technique has been confirmed experimentally and the accuracy of dispersion parameter measurement was comparable to that of commercial instruments with expensive equipment and components. The repeatability of the proposed method was better than 0.5%.

  • A new hybrid, heterodyne, fiber-optic electric field sensor scheme is presented. In this scheme, a dual polarization, dual frequency, stabilized He-Ne laser is used for the light source of the interferometer, Probe beam is delivered to the sensor head using polarization maintaining fiber. In the sensor head, $LiTaO_3$ electro-optic crystal is used for sensing element. Phase retardation is induced on the dual frquency, dual polarization probe beam due to applied electric field across the crystal. Induced phase retardation is demodulated by in-phase and quadrature demodulation technique. In this way, we can obtain optimum sensitivity for electric field measurement regardless a quasi-static phase difference between two polarization components.
