Effects of Organic Materials on Soil Chemical Properties (유기물(有機物)의 시용(施用)이 토양(土壤)의 화학적(化學的) 성질(性質)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • A review was made on the effect of organic matter application on the chemical characteristics of soils such as pH, solubilities of minerals, and cation exchange capacity mainly at flooded rice soils. The review can be summarized as follows: 1. Application of organic material such as rice straw and compost in flooded rice soil leads to a temporary lowering of soil pH at the earlier stage of soil reduction, due to the production of various organic acids and carbonic acid. This temporary lowered pH is replaced with the production of alkaline substances such as ammonia as the reduction of soil proceeds. 2. Incorporation of organic materials intensifies the ferrous iron, dissolving various minerals, virtually to the increase in electrical conductivity of soils. 3. Organic materials also play an important role in dissolving soil minerals through the production of various chelating agents. 4. Application of soil organic matter significantly increases cation exchange capacity of soils. 5. Continuous application of rice straw or compost leads to the increase in soil organic matter content to some extent, up to the level of equilibrium. In soils low in organic matter the equilibrium level is attained with five years continuous application of compost. 6. The manner of chemical fertilizer application influences the accumulation of organic matter applied in soils. Low levels of fertilization lowers the accumulation while high levels of fertilization accerelates the accumulation.

Comparison of Embryonic Developmental Capacity by different Co-culture Time of Oocytes in IVF-ET Cycles (체외수정술에서 난자의 공배양 시점에 따른 배아 발생능력의 비교)

  • Objective: To evaluate whether co-culture of oocytes on vero cell monolayers from Day 0 (Day 0 group) after egg retrieval results in an increase in developmental capacity such as fertilization rate, embryo quality, blastulation and clinical pregnancy rate compared with co-culture of oocytes from Day 1 (Day 1 group). Methods: Sperms were treated with Hams F-10 supplemented with 10% human follicular fluid (hFF). Vero cells for co-culture were prepared in TCM-199 with 10% FBS. Oocytes were co-cultured from Day 0 and fertilized oocytes were co-cultured from Day 1 on vero cell monolayers in DMEM with 10% and 20% hFF, respectively after egg retrieval. On day 1, 2 and 5, fertilization rate and grade of embryos and blastocysts were evaluated. Results (fertilization rate, cleavage rate, grade of embryos and blastocysts and pregnancy rate) were considered statistically significant when p value was less than 0.05 using t-test and $x^2$. Results: In sibling oocytes of same cycles, no differences were found in fertilization rate (94.6 vs. 91.4%), cleavage rates (94.6 vs. 91.4%), embryo grade (on day 2 and 3) and blastulation (65.6 vs. 57.0%) and their grade. In different oocytes of different cycles (patients), no differences were found in fertilization (79.8 vs. 78.3%), cleavage rates (77.7 vs. 76.4%) and blastulation (56.0 vs. 45.3%), but pregnancy rate was higher in the Day 0 group than in the Day 1 group (60.0 vs. 42.9%). Conclusions: This study revealed that the embryonic development capacities were not affected by the different co-culture time in the sibling oocytes of same cycles. Although no statistical significance, because of small size of study, there was a trend for higher pregnancy rates in Day 0 group compared to Day 1 group in different oocytes of different cycles.

The Effects of Fertilization on Growth Performances and Physiological Characteristics of Liriodendron tulipifera in a Container Nursery System (시비 처리가 백합나무 용기묘의 생장 및 생리적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Fertilization is essential to seedling production in nursery culture, but excessive fertilization can contaminate surface and ground water around the nursery. The objective of this study was to find optimal fertilization practice of container seedling production for reducing soil and water contamination around the nursery without compromising seedling quality. This study was conducted to investigate growth performance, photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, and chlorophyll contents of Liriodendron tulipifera growing under three different fertilization treatments (Constant rate, Three-stage rate, and Exponential rate fertilization). Root collar diameter, height, and biomass of L. tulipifera were the highest at Constant treatment. Like growth performance, seedling quality index (SQI) were higher at Constant than at other treatments, but not significantly different among treatments. L. tulipifera showed good photosynthetic capacity at all treatments. Photochemical efficiency and chlorophyll contents were significantly lower at Exponential than at other treatments. Therefore, Exponential fertilization which is 50% fertilizer of other treatments would maximize seedling growth and minimize nutrient loss.

  • This studies were carried out to investigate the effects of nitrogen fertilizer rates and methods of its application on maturity of leaves, total nitrogen and total alkaloids concentration in burley tobacco leaves. Nitrogen rate ranged from 17.5 to 40.5kg/10a and applied through basic fertilization and sidedressing. The filling capacity of cured leaves was decreased with increasing levels of nitrogen fertilizer. As the rate of nitrogen fertilization was increased or sidedressing, the maturity of leaves was delayed and total alkaloids and total nitrogen concentration were increased. Total alkaloids concentration in leaves was gradually increased, especially more in upper leaves from 60 to no days after tratnsplanting, but total nitrogen concentration was decreased.

  • Defective or inadequate semen quality, usually presenting as low sperm count or poor sperm motility , is recognizable by semen analysis. However, the ability of spermatozoa to fertilize an ovum is not determined used in various experiments. In this study, hamster oocyte sperm penetration assay was used to determine the fertilizing capacity of sperms in 20 subjects which divided into two groups, group A with 10 normal fertile men, and group B with 10 infertile men. The % penetration in group A and group B were 61% and 35% respectively, which showed statistically not significant but fertilization index was significantly different between group A(FI=2.24) and group B(FI=O.05). Additionally it seemed that the percentage of sperm penetraton was influenced more by the motility of spermatozoa than by the number.

  • Glass wool filtration and swim-up method resulted in inreasing to 58.3% and 62.7% of the progressive motility in frozen-thawed boar sperm, compared to 34.2% in the untreated sperm. Glass wool filtration tended to be more successful than swim-up method for the survival sfter incubation of 38.5$^{\circ}C$ for 3h.   • From the results of countrywide two year N. P. K simple trial with newly bred IR 667-Suwon 214 and leading local varieties for comparison soil productivity (yield without fertilizer) and fertilization productivity (yield increase with fertilizer) were investigated. 1. IR667 showed higher yield than leading local by 19% in 1971 and by 12% in the year of low temperature stress, 1972. High yielding capacity of IR667 was attributed to greater number of spikelet per panicle. The coefficient of variation in yield was smaller in IR667 but the leading locals showed higher yield in 23(1971) and 30% (1972) of the fields. 2. IR667 required more nitrogen, especially phosphorus and potassium. Fertilization efficiency (yield increment per unit fertilizer) in IR667 was-about 4kg higher in nitrogen but smaller in phosphorus and almost the same in potassium. 3. Soil productivity was higher in IR667 but percent contribution of soil productivity to total productivity (field productivity) was lower. 4. Percent contribution of fertilization productivity to field productivity was 19 to 33, of which 5 was due to phosphorus and potassium. 5. The greater the soil productivity, the greater the field productivity becomes, but the much greater the percentage contribution of soil productivity becomes. 6. Fertility saturation point at which fertilization efficiency is nil, was propoesd as a soil productivity (or field productivity) limit.

  • Four important attributes for successful fertilization by a spermatozoon are (ⅰ) correct morphology, (ⅱ) correct presentation of egg recognition and fusion molecules, (ⅲ) progressive motility and (ⅳ), correct transfer of signalling molecules from sperm to egg for activation of development. In this presentation, these topics will be described and illustrated with emphasis on the endogenous control mechanisms that enable spermatozoa to respond to external signals. (omitted)
