Correlations between the Polarization and Strain Induced by Electric field in $\textrm{0.9Pb}\textrm({Mg}_{1/3}\textrm{Nb}_{2/3})\textrm{O}_3$-$\textrm{0.1PbTiO}_3$ Relaxor Ferroelectrics ($\textrm{0.9Pb}\textrm({Mg}_{1/3}\textrm{Nb}_{2/3})\textrm{O}_3$-$\textrm{0.1PbTiO}_3$계 강유전체에서 전계인가에 따른 분극 및 변위의 상관관계)

  • Polarization and strain induced by unipolar electric field (P\ulcorner, S\ulcorner), those induced by bipolar electric field (P, S) and remanent polarization (P\ulcorner) were investigated in 0.9Pb(Mg\ulcornerNb\ulcorner)O$_3$-$0.1PbTiO_3$relaxor ferroelectric ceramics in the temperature range of $-50^{\circ}C$~$90^{\circ}C$. From the temperature dependence of polarization and strain, the transition from predominantly paraelectric (electrostrictive) to partially ferroelectric (piezoelectric) is visualized. Under the given temperature, the P\ulcorner/P\ulcorner is always larger than the S\ulcorner/S\ulcorner and the difference between them becomes larger ass the temperature decrease. The S\ulcorner/P\ulcorner increases as the temperature decreased below phase transition temperature. It was suggested that these experimental results might be explained with a simple rigid ion model concentrating on BO\ulcorner octahedron.

Ferroelectric Properties and DPT in the Perovskite PMT-PT System (Perovskite PMT-PT계의 강유전 특성 및 확산상전이)

  • Ferroelectric properties of the PMT-PT were also studied from the temperature dependence of hysteresis loops using a method slightly modified from Sawyer-Tower's. Dielectric, pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the ceramics in the system PMT-PT were investigated. The resulted densities of the PMT-PT ceramics system were greater than 97 % of the theoretical value. As observed SEM micrograph of the fracture surfaces of the PMT-PT ceramics system, the average grain sizes were increased about 3-5 ${\mu}m$ to 6-8 ${\mu}m$ with increasing sintering temperature. The specimens with PT<0.30 for PMT-PT solid solution system exhibited the dielectric and pyroelectric properties of a typical relaxor ferroelectrics. The composition with the maximum dielectric constant exhibits relatively superior pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties.

  • Ferroelectric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric effects for lanthanum modified $BiFeO_3-PbTiO_3$ ceramics have been investigated. The data show that magnetoelectric polarization coefficient, ${\alpha}_p$ is due to a linear coupling between polarization and magnetization, and that ${\alpha}_p$ is independent of dc magnetic bias and ac magnetic field. The values of ${\alpha}_p$ and magnetic induced susceptibility for lanthanum modified $BiFeO_3-PbTiO_3$ ceramics are much larger than those of single $BiFeO_3$ crystal. We believe that the magnetoelectric effect is significantly enhanced by breaking of the cycloidal spin state of a long-period spiral spin structure due to randomly distributed charged imperfections.

Effect of Nb Doping on the Dielectric and Strain Properties of Lead-free 0.94(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3-0.06BaTiO3 Ceramics

  • $(Bi_{1/2}Na_{1/2})_{0.94}Ba_{0.06}(Ti_{1-x}Nb_x)O_3$ (BNBTxNb) ceramics were investigated in terms of the crystal structure as well as the ferroelectric, dielectric, and piezoelectric properties. While little change was observed in the microstructure except for a slight decrease in the average grain size, a significant change was noticed in the temperature dependence of dielectric and piezoelectric properties. It was shown that the property changes are closely related to the downward shift in the position of the ferroelectric-to-relaxor transition temperature with increasing amount of Nb doping. A special emphasis is put on the fact that Nb doping is so effective at decreasing the ferroelectric-to-relaxor transition temperature that even at no more than 2 at.% Nb addition, the transition temperature was already brought down slightly below room temperature, resulting in the birth of a large strain at 0.46 %, equivalent to $S_{max}/E_{max}=767pm/V$.

  • The structural, piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of $(1-x)(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$ x=0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.10) ceramics were investigated. A gradual change in the crystal and microstructures with tile increase of $BaTiO_3$ (BT) concentration was observed. The $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$ (BNT) samples show unusual properties as ferroelectric relaxer materials. We observed a phase transition in BNT solid solutions with BT having normal ferroelectric phase transition. At room temperature, BNT presents a single phase without the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). In the case of samples doped with $4\~8 mol\%$ BT, rhombohedral-tetragonal MPB was formed and the piezoelectric properties were improved.

Fractal Analysis of the Surface in Thin Film Capacitors

  • The thin films of high permitivity in ferroelectric materials using a capacitor are applied to DRAMs and FRAMs. (Ba, Sr)TiO$_3$ thin as ferroelectric materials were prepared by the sol-gel method and made by spin-coating on the Pt/Sio$_2$/Si substrate at 4,000 [rpm] for 10 seconds. The structural characteristics of the surface were analyzed by fractal dimension. The thickness of BST ceramics thin films was about 260∼280 [nm]. The property of the leakage current was stable with 10-9∼10-11[A] when the applied voltage was 0∼3[V]. BST thin films ha low leakage current properties when fractal dimension was low and a coating area was high.

  • The discovery of ferroelectric barium titanate (BaTiO$_3$) in 1942 began the present era of dielectrics-based electronic ceramics. Ferroelectric barium titanate has a high dielectric constant and after the recognition of BaTiO$_3$ as a new ferroelectric compound, various attractive electrical properties have been extensively studied and reported. Since then, pioneering work on valence-compensated semiconduction led to the discovery of the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of the resistance effect found in doped BaTiO$_3$. Significant progress has since followed with respect to understanding the PTC phenomena, advancing materials capabilities, and developing devices for sensor and switching applications. In this paper, the theoretical aspects of the various PTC models are discussed and the future trends of practical applications for PTC devices are briefly mentioned.

Experiment and Prediction of Nonlinear Behavior at High Temperatures of Ferroelectric Ceramics Switched by Electric Field at Room Temperature

  • Changes in polarization and thermal expansion coefficients during temperature increase of a poled lead zirconate titanate (PZT) cube specimen switched by an electric field at room temperature are measured. The measured data are analyzed to construct governing differential equations for polarization and strain changes. By solving the differential equations, an experimental formula for the high temperature behavior of ferroelectric materials is obtained. It is found that the predictions by the formula are in good agreement with measures. From the viewpoint of macroscopic remnant state variables, it appears that the processes of electric field-induced switching at different temperatures are identical and independent of temperature between $20^{\circ}C$ and $110^{\circ}C$.

  • PZT ceramics, usually used pyroelectric materials exhibited a relatively highly Curie temperture(Tc) of $250-450^{\circ}C$ and permittivity constant of 500-1600. In this paper, the pyroelectric infrared detectors are applied two different types of pyroelectric materials, that is tetragonal crystal of ferroelectric $PbTiO_3$ and rhombohedral crystal of $Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$. PZT ceramics shows not only highly Curie temperture but also excellent pyro and piezoelectric properties at the Zr/Ti(=52/48) ratio. Therefor in this paper, the pyroelectric infrared detectors are applied PZT ceramics, and obtained sensitive sensing characteristics by expriment case studies.

  • BiFeO3 with perovskite structure is a well-known material that has both ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic properties called multiferroics. However, leaky electrical properties and difficulty of controlling stoichiometry due to Bi volatility and difficulty of obtaining high relative density due to high dependency on the ceramic process are issues for BiFeO3 applications. In this work we investigated the sintering behavior of samples with different stoichiometries and sintering conditions. To understand the optimum sintering conditions, nonstoichiometric Bi1±xFeO3±δ ceramics and Ti-doped Bi1.03Fe1-4x/3TixO3 ceramics were synthesized by a conventional solid-state route. Dense single phase BiFeO3 ceramics were successfully fabricated using a two-step sintering and quenching process. The effects of Bi volatility on microstructure were determined by Bi-excess and Ti doping. Bi-excess increased grain size, and Ti doping increased sintering temperature and decreased grain size. It should be noted that Ti-doping suppressed Bi volatility and stabilized the BiFeO3 phase.
