  • Femtosecond laser micro-processing received much attention in the past decade. The nature of ultra-short light-matter interaction permits femtosecond laser to overcome the diffraction limit and realize precise micro-processing. The ultrahigh light intensity of the femtosecond laser allows sapece-selective microscopic modifications to materials based on multiphoton processes. In this paper, we review our recent research development on space-selective precipitation and control of functional crystals in glasses by an infrared femtosecond laser. The technique will open new possibilities in the fabrication of micro-optical components with various optical functions.

  • A femtosecond laser pre-annealing process based on indium zinc oxide (IZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) is fabricated. We demonstrate a stable pre-annealing process to analyze surface structure change of thin films, and we maintain electrical stability and improve electrical performance. Furthermore, dynamic electrical characteristics of the IZO TFTs were investigated. Femtosecond laser pre-annealing process-based IZO TFTs exhibit a field-effect mobility of $3.75cm^2/Vs$, an $I_{on}/I_{off}$ ratio of $1.77{\times}10^5$, a threshold voltage of 1.13 V, and a subthreshold swing of 1.21 V/dec. And the IZO-based inverter shows a fast switching behavior response. From this study, IZO TFTs from using the femtosecond laser annealing technique were found to strongly affect the electrical performance and charge transport dynamics in electronic devices.

  • The characteristics of femtosecond laser ablation of $Al_2O_3$ for prescision microfabrication are studied experimentally. Specifically, the process time during femtosecond laser drilling of microholes with $sub-100{\mu}m$ diameter are investigated for varying laser fluence, scan speed and beam path designs like trepanning with continuously changed start points. The accumulation of sub-micrometer size particles within the hole and the deterioration of edge clarity and roundness for decreasing hole diameter are examined and through process optimization the microdrilling with good hole quality is achieved using a femtosecond laser system (repetitionrate 1 kHz, wavelength 785 nm, pulse duration 185 fs)

  • We fabricated a multi-layer diffraction grating inside fused silica glass by using a femtosecond laser direct writing method. The femtosecond laser with a wavelength of 515 nm, a pulse width of 250 fs, a repetition rate of 100 kHz, and an average output power of 6 W was used. Two layer diffraction grating with a grating period of $6{\mu}m$ was successfully fabricated with the layer gap of 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and $5{\mu}m$, respectively. Also, we investigated the diffraction pattern by illuminating a He-Ne laser beam. Finally, we demonstrated the diffraction grating with a grating period of $3{\mu}m$ by adjusting the gap of each layer with a grating period of $6{\mu}m$. Femtosecond laser direct writing technology of multi-layer has a potential to fabricate the diffraction grating with a grating period of below $1.5{\mu}m$.

  • This paper investigates applications of femtosecond lasers for the micromachining of transparent materials and fabrication of optical devices. We show commercial micromachining examples of transparent materials which have been fabricated for various applications. Near infrared femtosecond laser processing is an attractive method to fabricate three-dimensional optical waveguides into various transparent materials. Focused femtosecond laser pulses induce a permanent refractive-index change only near the focal point. We also demonstrate a Y coupler with the splitting ratio of 1:1 written by femtosecond laser pulses into a fused silica glass. The minimum propagation loss of 0.8 ㏈/㎝ awl the refractive-index change of 0.006-0.01 at the wavelength of 1550 ㎚ were achieved by optimization of the laser fluence.

  • Electrospun meshed poly-caprolactone PCL was patterned by femtosecond laser with linear grooves. As parametric variables, focus spot size, pulse energy, and scanning speed were varied to determine the affects on groove size and the characteristics of the electrospun fiber at the edges of these grooves. The femtosecond laser was seen to be an effective means for flexibly structuring the surface of ES PCL scaffolds and the width of the ablated grooves was well controlled by laser energy and focus spot size. The ablation threshold was measured to be $14.9J/cm^2$ which is a little higher than other polymers. These affects were attributed to optical multiple reflections inside nano-fibers. By the laser-induced plasma at higher pulse energies, some melting of fibers was observed.

  • We report experimental results on the periodic patterning using a Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser (800nm, 100fs, 1kHz). Periodic structures with reproducible basic patterns are produced both on the surface and inside transparent materials. Period patterning for the application to display panel is widely investigated. Also, the submicron dot and line patterns are fabricated inside fused silica glass, which is important for the formation of diffraction grating in integrated optical circuit. finally, we demonstrate the utility of the femtosecond laser application to optical memory by fabricating the three-dimensional dot patterns.

  • Parallel femtosecond laser processing using a computer-generated hologram (CGH) displayed on a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LCSLM) is demonstrated. The use of the LCSLM enables to perform an arbitrary and variable patterning. This holographic femtosecond laser processing has advantages of high throughput and high light-use efficiency. A critical issue is to precisely control the intensities of the diffraction peaks of the CGH. We demonstrate some methods for the control of the diffraction peaks. We also demonstrate the laser processing with two-dimensional and three-dimensional parallelism.

  • One of display trends today is development of high pixel density. To get high PPI, a small size of pixel must be developed. RGB pixel is arranged by evaporation process which determines pixel size. Normally, a fine metal mask (FMM; Invar alloy) has been used for evaporation process and it has advantages such as good strength, and low thermal expansion coefficient at low temperature. A FMM has been manufactured by chemical etching which has limitation to controlling the pattern shape and size. One of alternative method for patterning FMM is laser micromachining. Femtosecond laser is normally considered to improve those disadvantages for laser micromachining process due to such short pulse duration. In this paper, a femtosecond laser drilling for thickness of 16 ㎛ FMM is examined. Additionally, we introduce experimental results for controlling taper angle of hole by vibration module adapted in laser system. We used Ti:Sapphire based femtosecond laser with attenuating optics, co-axial illumination, vision system, 3-axis linear stage and vibration module. By controlling vibration amplitude, entrance and exit diameters are controllable. Using vibrating objective lens, we can control taper angle when femtosecond laser hole drilling by moving focusing point. The larger amplitude of vibration we control, the smaller taper angle will be carried out.

  • Interface friction in blanking dies, cold forging and extrusion of aluminum alloys is a major cause of inefficient process. This paper describes an investigation of femtosecond laser texturing for reduction of interface friction on sliding surfaces in forming process. Femtosecond direct writing technology was used to fabricate a laser micro-machined die and to create microgroove patterns with varying size and density on metal forming dies. A systematic approach to find the optimum parameters and computer simulation comparison of friction coefficients are provided to study the relation of friction coefficients and die profiles. In metal forming tests, the effectiveness of various laser-machined patterns for enhancing interface lubrication is determined.
