Academic achievements and self-esteem were assessed for a sample of adolescents (male 187, female 201) in KYPS (Korea Youth Panel Survey). Cross-lagged autoregressive analyses indicated that for academic achievement and self-esteem, these two variables were reciprocally interrelated in middle school. However, thereafter, middle school 3rd grade students' self-esteem influenced high school 1st grade students' academic achievement, while high school 1st grade students' academic achievement influenced high school 2nd grade students' self-esteem.

Subjects were 396 male and female 10th grade students. Data were collected with structured questionnaires and analyzed by SPSS. Findings were that the internet functioned as a major field of interpersonal relationships for Korean adolescents. Among 3 types of internet usage patterns, pursuit of interpersonal relationship, constituted most of the functioning and the most intimate friendships and game pleasure had the fewest and least intimate friendships both in real life and on the internet. Subjects addicted to the internet had the most functioning friendships and the highest level of intimacy in friendships. As the level of internet addiction increased, the level of satisfaction in friendships in real life decreased while the level of satisfaction of friendships through the internet increased.

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify cell phone addiction in high school students and variables predicting this addiction. Methods: The participants were 469 adolescents from four high schools. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires, and analyzed using the SPSS program. Results: Of the high school students, 88.4% reported being average users, 7.5%, heavy users, and 4.1%, cell phone addicted. Cell phone addiction was significantly correlated with immediate self-control, self-efficacy, depression, and peer support. Predictors of cell phone addiction were the following: receiving text message on weekends, immediate self-control, main use (text message), minute per call on weekdays, listening to music, gender (female), monthly call charges, depression, person called (friends), and self-efficacy. These factors explained 39% of variance in cell phone addiction. Conclusion: The above findings indicate that cell phone addiction in high school students was influenced by gender, cell phone use, and psychological factors. Therefore the approach to effective cell phone addiction management for high school students is to consider these variables when developing programs for these students.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how parenting and peer relationships influence the development of adolescent self-concept by using Structural Equation Modeling(SEM). The subjects were 198 first graders (94 male and 104 female) from four high schools within the Seoul area. Descriptive and comparative statistical analysis was conducted with SPSS (Version10.0), while AMOS (Version 4.0) was used to assess structural equation modelling of parenting, peer relationship and the self-concept. Results showed that, in terms of correlation, more positive parenting behaviors induced more positive self-concept. In addition, better peer relationships demonstrated more positive self-concept. Regression analysis showed that peer relationships explained the variance in adolescents' self-concept more effectively than parenting behavior. This was confirmed by the SEM.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of early menarche on sexual experience among high school girls in South Korea. Methods: The study sample was comprised of 16,286 high school girls. Using statistics from the 11th (2015) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, hierarchical logistic regression analysis was conducted. Results: Among the girls, 5.8% reported early menarche. Early menarche was associated with sexual experience (Odds Ratio (OR), 5.27; 95% Confidence Interval (CI), 4.11-6.77). Controlled for sociodemographic, emotional and health behavior characteristics, early menarche was associated with sexual experience (OR, 3.98; 95% CI, 3.04-5.21). Conclusion: The results indicate that early menarche predicts an increase in sexual experience among female adolescents. Therefore, health education programs and health policy for interventions to improve sexual health are required for girls who are expected to experience early menarche.

  • The menarcheal age of Korean women has been rapidly decreasing for the last 50 years, and the average menarcheal age of women born in the 1990s is approaching 12.6 years. In addition, interest in early puberty has been increasing recently owing to the rapid increase in precocious puberty. Generally, out of concern for short stature and early menarche, idiopathic central precocious puberty in female adolescents is treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs. Studies to date have described the association between early menarche and psychosocial problems such as delinquency and risky sexual behavior, as well as physical health problems such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and breast cancer throughout the lifespan of women. However, the pathophysiological mechanism underlying this association has not been clarified thus far. In this article, we review and discuss the existing literature to describe the current understanding of the effects of early menarche on the physical and psychosocial health of adolescent girls and adult women.
