The objective of this study was to determine the effect of rain tree pod meal with palm oil supplementation on feed intake, digestibility, microbial protein synthesis and microbial populations in dairy cows. Four, multiparous early-lactation Holstein-Friesian crossbred (75%) lactating dairy cows with an initial body weight (BW) of $405{\pm}40$ kg and $36{\pm}8$ DIM were randomly assigned to receive dietary treatments according to a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design. The four dietary treatments were un-supplementation (control), supplementation with rain tree pod meal (RPM) at 60 g/kg, supplementation with palm oil (PO) at 20 g/kg, and supplementation with RPM at 60 g/kg and PO at 20 g/kg (RPO), of total dry matter intake. The cows were offered concentrates, at a ratio of concentrate to milk production of 1:2, and chopped 30 g/kg of urea treated rice straw was fed ad libitum. The RPM contained condensed tannins and crude saponins at 88 and 141 g/kg of DM, respectively. It was found that supplementation with RPM and/or PO to dairy cows diets did not show negative effects on feed intake and ruminal pH and BUN at any times of sampling (p>0.05). However, RPM supplementation resulted in lower crude protein digestibility, $NH_3$-N concentration and number of proteolytic bacteria. It resulted in greater allantoin absorption and microbial crude protein (p<0.05). In addition, dairy cows showed a higher efficiency of microbial N supply (EMNS) in both RPM and RPO treatments. Moreover, NDF digestibility and cellulolytic bacteria numbers were highest in RPO supplementation (p<0.05) while, supplementation with RPM and/or PO decreased the protozoa population in dairy cows. Based on this study, supplementation with RPM and/or PO in diets could improve fiber digestibility, microbial protein synthesis in terms of quantity and efficiency and microbial populations in dairy cows.
A field experiment was carried out to determine the effects of mechanical and chemical drying agents at mowing on the field drying rate and hay quality of orchardgrass dominant pasture plants. The mower conditioner /chemical drying agent ($K_2CO_3$ 2% conditioning, $K_2CO_3$ 2% + conditioning and control) were treated at different harvest stages (late boot, heading and bloom stage) for hastening hay manufacture in 1996. After field dry, four square bales were made by hay baler, and the visual estimation and nutritive value of hay were evaluated after storing two months. The field drying rate of pasture plants was higher with delayed stage of harvest, and mechanical and mechanical + chemical, but chemical alone was very low. In mower conditioning, the duration of field dry was shortened by 0.5 to 1 day compared with $K_2CO_3$ and 1.5 to 2 days compared with control. The dry matter loss of hay was reduced by late harvest and mechanical, and mechanical + chemical, but the score by chemical alone was very low. The visual score (leafiness, green color, odor and softness) of hay after storage was high in mechanical and mechanical + chemical, but the score by chemical alone was very low. Nutritive value (ADF, NDF, digestibility, and relative feed value) of hay was also high with treatment of mechanical and mechanical + chemical, but the quality by chemical alone was similar compared with control. The quality of hay was very low when harvested at bloom stage. In conclusion, mower conditioning can enhance the field drying rate of orchardgrass dominant pasture plants, however the drying efficiency of chemical drying agent was very low. Harvesting at early heading to heading stage was recommened for manufacture of high quality hay.
Computer simulation has been widely used to design and optimize the operation of wastewater treatment plants since 1980. For secondary clarifiers, the simulation has been a tool to optimize the performance by providing dimensions for flocculation well. However, there has been no attempt to find the optimized geometrical parameters in circular secondary clarifier using simulation tools. In this study, three SVIs (Sludge Volume Indexes), two well types (feed and flocculation wells), 8 SWDs (Side Water Depths) and 9 bottom slopes were variables for simulation. Diurnal inflow and associated MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solid) concentrations were used for input loadings. When flocculation well was installed, 48% less concentration at lowest ESS (Effluent Suspended Solid) concentrations was produced and the diurnal ESS concentration range had been reduced by 52%. From these results, flocculation well must be installed to produce lower and stable ESS from circular secondary clarifiers. Under same loading conditions with $300m{\ell}$/g of SVI, The lowest ESS was produced when SWD was 4.5m with 4% of bottom slope. Therefore, SWD and bottom slope must not be deeper than 4.5m and must be near 4%, respectively, in circular clarifier with flocculation well to produce the lowest ESS concentration.
Many antinutritional and toxic factors abound in tropical seeds, which are also generally rich in nutrients and therefore more prone to attack from herbivores. Antinutritional and toxic factors are considered to defend seeds against environmental vagaries and thus help to protect them. These factors though good for the plant, cause deleterious effects or are even toxic to animals and man. The conventional seeds cultivated for oil or non-oil purposes, and general aspects of antinutritional factors are not presented here as these have already been discussed widely by many workers. Deficits in conventional protein and energy sources in the tropics have stimulated a quest for alternative feeds both for animals and humans. This article attempts to highlight two new oilseed crops, Jatropha curcas and Moringa oleifera, and in addition deals with some under-utilized seeds with potential as animal feed. Most of these seed plants are adapted to various marginal growing conditions in the tropics and can help to mitigate the prevailing deficit in protein and energy sources. Antinutritional and toxic factors in seed or seed meal, various approaches to detoxify seed meal, and future research and development priorities for their exploitation as animal feeds are presented.

There is increasing interest in exploiting natural products as feed additives to solve problems in animal nutrition and livestock production. Essential oils and saponins are two types of plant secondary compounds that hold promise as natural feed additives for ruminants. This paper describes recent advances in research into these additives. The research has generally concentrated on protein metabolism. Dietary essential oils caused rates of NH$_3$ production from amino acids in ruminal fluid taken from sheep and cattle receiving the oils to decrease, yet proteinase and peptidase activities were unchanged. Hyper-ammonia-producing (HAP) bacteria were the most sensitive of ruminal bacteria to essential oils in pure culture. Essential oils also slowed colonisation and digestion of some feedstuffs. Ruminobacter amylophilus may be a key organism in mediating these effects. Saponin-containing plants and their extracts appear to be useful as a means of suppressing the bacteriolytic activity of rumen ciliate protozoa and thereby enhancing total microbial protein flow from the rumen. The effects of some saponins seems to be transient, which may stem from the hydrolysis of saponins to their corresponding sapogenin aglycones, which are much less toxic to protozoa. Saponins also have selective antibacterial effects which may prove useful in, for example, controlling starch digestion. These studies illustrate that plant secondary compounds, of which essential oils and saponins comprise a small proportion, have great potential as 'natural' manipulators of rumen fermentation, to the potential benefit of the farmer and the environment.
The training and prediction modeling using an artificial neural network was implemented to predict the turbidity of treated water as well as to estimate the optimized feed concentration of polyaluminium chloride (PACl) in a water treatment plant. The parameters used in the input layers were pH, temperature, turbidity and alkalinity, while those in output layers were PACl and turbidity of treated water. Levenberg-Marquadt method of feedforward back-propagation perceptron in the neural network toolbox of MATLAB program was used in this study. Correlation coefficients of the training data with the measured data were 0.9997 for PACl and 0.6850 for turbidity and those of the testing data with measured data were 0.9140 for PACl and 0.3828 for turbidity, when four parameters at input layer, 12-12 nodes each at both the first and the second hidden layers, and two parameters(PACl and turbidity) at output layer were used. Although the predictability of PACl was improved, compared to that of the previous studies to use the only coagulant dose as output layer, turbidity in treated water could not be predicted well. Acquisition of more data through several years obtained with the advanced on-line measuring system could make the artificial neural network useful and practical in actual water treatment plants.
Most of steam power plants in Korea are using the method of heating the feed water whenever the ambient temperature around the power plant area below $5^{\circ}C$ to prevent freezing water flowing in the pipe in winter time. But this kind of heat supplying system is not useful to save energy. If we take the method that the temperature of the each pipe is controled by direct measure of temperature by attaching sensor on the outside surface of the feed water tubes, then we can expect that a plenty of energy can be saved. In this study, the computer simulation is used to compare the energy consumption loads of both systems. Energy saving rate is calculated for the location of Incheon area in winter season. Four convection heat transfer coefficients for the ambient air and three initial flowing water temperature inside the tube were used. The result shows that the temperature control system using sensor represents more than 95% of energy saving rate in Incheon area. Even in the severe January weather condition, the energy saving rate is almost 75% in two days basis and even 83% in one day basis.
Organic livestock farming in northern European regions has been expanded with the major animals of large ruminants using pastures and grass silages. Organic livestock farming in some European countries has been in rather short of productivity compared to the conventional livestock farming, however since the gap of productivity between organic and conventional livestock farming has been reported to be reduced when the efficiency of management would improve, organic livestock farming has a potential to develop as a clean livestock farming in the future. We expect that organic livestock farming be propelled to a future model of livestock farming in Korea too. As the schemes for realization of organic livestock farming in Korea, firstly a system for the consistent supply of organic feed should be established. Mountainous areas that represents 63 % of total area of Korea could be utilized for the production of organic forages. Uncultivated rice paddy and upland agricultural field could also be used for this purpose. The active application of organic agricultural by-products such as organic rice straw, organic rice bran and SO forth can be considered for organic livestock farming. Secondly, the replacement of anti-biotics for the management of animal diseases should be developed using natural products. Plants and microbes would be good sources of natural products. Thirdly, the realization of organic livestock farming may require a system for certification of the organic farms and consequently the experts to work on.
The lynx spiders are free wandering spiders with long spines on their legs. They do not build web, but hunt small insects on plants. In spite of the facts that the wandering spiders do not produce webs for prey-catching, they also have silk apparatuses even though the functions are not fully defined. This paper describes the microstructural organization of the silk-spinning nozzles and its silk glands of the lynx spider, Oxyopes licenti, revealed by the field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The silkspinning nozzles of this spider were identified as three groups: ampullate, pyriform and aciniform glands. Each group of silk gland feed silk into one of the three pairs of spinnerets. Two pairs of major ampullate glands send secretory ductules to the anterior spinnerets, and another two pair of minor ampullate glands supply the middle spinnerets. In addition, the pyriform glands feed silk into the anterior spinnerets (25-30 pairs in females and 24-40 pairs in males), and the aciniform glands send ductules to the middle (9-12 pairs in females and 7-11 pairs in males) and the posterior spinnerets (16-20 pairs in females and 16-17 pairs in males). Among these, the ampullate one is the most predominate gland in both sexes. However the flagelliform and the aggregate glands which had the functions of cocoon production or adhesive thread production in other webbuilding spiders were not observed at both sexes of this spider.
Major rice grain losses both in quality and in quantity are incurred in the whitening process which is indispensable in the milling process. Rice whitening it performed by two different whitening actions known as abrasive and frictional. In Korea, abrasive-type whiteners equipped with a emery-stone roller have been adopted in the whitening system in large scale milling plants, but not in customary small scale. However, researches on this type whitener have rarely been conducted in Korea. This study was attempted to establish design criteria or a modified abrasive-type whitener which is aerated with blower. The factors considered in this study were three levels of feedscrew pitch (20, 27, 34 mm) and three levels of clearance(11, 13, 15 mm) between surfaces or emery-stone roller and screen and two levels of moisture content (14.5%, 15.7%, w.b.) of brown rice. Also, the effect of aeration on whitening performance was examined, and a system performance consisting of one pass in the aerated abrasive-type and two passes in the existing friction type was compared with the performance of the existing whitening system consisting of three passes in friction type only. The latter system is prevailed in customery small milling plants. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1. The interactions between feed-screw pitch and chamber clearance of the aerated abrasive-type whitener had great effect on the performance of the machine. When the value of a nondimensional parameter, $C^2/(P{\cdot}d_p)$, expressing the relations between feed-screw pitch, P, and chamber clearance, C, ranged from 0.40 to 0.45, the performance of the aerated abrasive-type whitener was the best. 2. Aeration to the abrasive-type whitener gave positive effect on milled and head rice recoveries. 3. The whitening system involving the aerated abrasive-type whitener, which has appropriate feed-screw pitch and chamber clearance as described in item 1 above, produced more milled and head rice recoveries by about 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively, than the existing frictional whitening system. The former also consumed less electricity by about 10% (0.9KwH/1000kg).
