  • Gyeongsang Basin in the southeastern part of the Korean peninsular is characterized by many fault systems. To decipher the geotectonical evolution of the Korean peninsular and marginal basins in her adjacent areas it is prerequisite to understand the spatial distribution pattern and mutual relationships of these fault systems. Because of difficulties in finding any criterion to recognize the faults in field, their extension and mutual relationships in ages are not very clear yet. As an attempt to find geophysical criteria to recognize the fault, geoelectrical resistivity survey was carried out in this study. With the Wenner configuration four resistivity soundings and twenty seven resistivity profilings were done. The electrode distance used was up to 50m. From the results of the resistivity soundings and boring data of earlier groundwater investigations the depth of alluvial and weathered zone was established to be at most 20m in the study area. In the resistivity profiling low resistivity anomaly zones are detected on every traverse, which are interpreted as caused by fractures, fault clays and mylonites in the fault zone. The width of the fault zone amounts to 0.3-1km. By correlating and connecting the negative anomaly zones from traverse to traverse one can determine the trend of th of the faultzone and therefore that of fault itself. The recognized fault trend in this way was $N15^{\circ}-20^{\circ}E$ and this coincides with the direction of the inferred fault line from earlier geological surface mapping. With the help of this characteristical negative anomaly the existance of another $N80^{\circ}W$ trending fault was estabished. This study has shown that geoelectrical resistivity survey can be applied successfully to the problem of tracing fault line insofar as a fault zone has been developed along fault line.

  • Lineaments in the Kyungsang basin most intensely develop in the East coast domain including the Yangsan fault, which dominantly run in NNE direction. The geometry of small fault population near or along the Yangsan fault represents the dominant strikes of N35E, high angle dips and shallowly plunging rakes with dextral movement sense. Stereographic solution on the Yangsan fault geometry gives the dip of 88SE, the slip direction of 17,024 and the slip rake of 18, which were determined from the strike (N23E) of the fault measured on map, and the average attitude (N35E, 84SE) and fault striation (16, 037) of small fault population considered as Riedel shears. It is judged from the geometry of small fault population to the main Yangsan fault and dragging features of bedding attitude near the fault that the Yangsan fault was produced from dextrally strike-slip movement. The movement of the Yangsan and the adjacent parallel faults is thought to be taken place much later than the other fault sets in the Kyungsang basin. It might occur during the geologic age from Eocence to early Miocene according to the consideration of K-Ar ages of the igneous rocks near the fault. The estimated paleostress state indicates ENE shortening and NNW extension. The displacement of the Yangsan fault in the study area is not constant along the fault but decreases from the south to the north. Taking the northern end of the study area as a separating point the whole extension of the Yangsan fault may be divided into southern and northern segments.

  • The estimation of recurrence interval for fault activity and earthquake is an important input parameter for seismic hazard assessment. In this study, the methods of recurrences interval estimation were reviewed and tentative calculation was performed for age dating data which have uncertainty. Age dating data come from previous studies of Ulsan fault system which is a well developed lineament in the southeastern part of korean Peninsula. Age dating for fault gouges, parent rocks, Quaternary sediments and veins were carried out by several researchers through various methods. Recurrence interval for fault activity was estimated on the basis of the age dating data of minor fault gouge and sediments during past 3Ma. The estimated recurrence interval was about 430-500 ka. Exact estimation of recurrence interval for fault activity need to compile more geological data and fault characteristics such as fault length, amount of displacement, slip rate and accurate fault movement age. In the future, the methods and results of fault recurrence interval estimation should be considered for establishing the criteria for domestic active fault definition.

  • In this paper, we propose a fault diagnosis method using artificial neural network and SVM (Support Vector Machine) to detect and isolate faults in the nonlinear systems. The proposed algorithm consists of two main parts: fault detection through threshold testing using a artificial neural network and fault isolation by SVM fault classifier. In the proposed method a fault is detected when the errors between the actual system output and the artificial neural network nominal system output cross a predetermined threshold. Once a fault in the nonlinear system is detected the SVM fault classifier isolates the fault. The computer simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed SVM and artificial neural network based fault diagnosis method.

  • In aviation navigation by GPS, requirements on availability and integrity must be absolutely satisfied for safety. Current study on accomplishing this integrity includes RAM(Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring), checking integrity internally in GPS receiver itself. However RAIM techniques have be investigated and presented under assumption that there is included only one fault in measurements from GPS, In case of multiple fault, an interaction among bias errors sometimes results in decreasing the effect of multiple fault. This may make an exact fault detection and identification difficult, and study on mutiple fault RAIM focused on. This paper explains the reasons that techniques applied on single fault are not adequate to extend directly to two faults case and shows that RAIM solution on two fault may be given in revised parity space.

  • As a part of study on the structure of the Yangsan Fault, geological and VLF EM studies have been made in the fault area approximately between Kyeongju and Eonyang. The result provides comparatively clear information on the trace of the fault and extent of fracture zone as well as the structural characteristics of the Yangsan Fault area. The location of fault trace identified from this VLF EM study coincides well in general with that expected from geological information of the area. And the extent of fault fracture zone turn out to be characterized by U shaped low resistivity zone whose width increases from north to south.

  • According to the use of distribution automation systems, the function to find or to search a fault phase is necessary for automatic switches in a distribution substation. In this paper, two algorithms are developed to fine the fault circuit and the fault phase for the automatic switches in substation with ungrounded power system. One is the fault circuit searching method using the zero sequence voltage at the bus and zero sequence current of circuit current and the other is to find the fault phase using the line voltage and zero sequence current. The developed algorithms are tested in the case study simulations. An ungrounded power system is modeled by EMTP as a case study system. The developed algorithms are tested in the case study simulations and each shows correct results.

  • To study the reverse fault formation process and the stress evolution feature, a simulation test system of reverse fault formation is developed based on the analysis of reverse fault formation mechanism. The system mainly consists of simulation laboratory module, operation console and horizontal loading control system, and data monitoring system. It can represent the fault formation process, induce fault crack initiation and simulate faults of different throws. Simulation tests on reverse fault formation process are conducted by using the simulation test system: horizontal loading is added to one side of the model. the bottom rock layer cracks under the effect of the induction device. The crack dip angle is about 29°. A reverse fault is formed with the expansion of the crack dip angle towards the upper right along the fracture surface and the slippage of the hanging wall over the foot wall. Its formation process unfolds five stages: compressive deformation of rock, local crack initiation, reverse fault penetration, slippage of the hanging wall over the foot wall and compaction of fault plane. There is residual structural stress inside rock after fault formation. The study methods and results have guiding and referential significance for further study on reverse fault formation mechanism and rock stress evolution.

  • A soft-recoil system, which is a new technology, can dramatically reduce a recoil force. Due to the inaccurate explosion, various fault modes may happen. These fault modes can cause the serious damage of the recoil system and must be suppressed to avoid them. In the present study, the fault mode control method of the soft-recoil system is investigated. A hydraulic damper is working under normal mode and a MR damper is additionally working when the fault modes happen. In the design of the fault mode controller, the detection method of the fault mode is important as well as its suppression. The results of the simulation show that the soft-recoil system performs when the fault modes happen.
