  • Although a family-centered approach to health care for developmentally disabled children has been advocated, existing systems of care have not adequately addressed the support needs of the family system and the essential role that parents play in the daily care of these children. The overall purpose of this research is to examine family system adaptation to the care of a developmetally disabled child using the Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustement, and Adaptation Framework. Relationships among family system demands (stressors, strains, transitions, child's illness factors) and family system strengths and capabilities(resource of social support) were examined to determine their separate and combined contribution to explanining the variability in family system outcomes (family system coping ). The subject for this study was 46 families who have a child with developmental disabilities(mental retardation and / or autism) from three special educational programs in Seoul, Korea. Results from correlation and hierachial regression analysis revealed that perceived social support operated as a resiliency factor between family stress and coping. Child and family characteristics appeared to be important predictors of perceived social support and coping. In summary, there is evidence that the resource of social support as a family strength and capability was found to improve the family coping. These findings also must be viewed within the context that sample of families of children with disabilities was relatively small and eligible families from support group of special educational program.

  • To investigate the response rate for family examination and the morbidity of family members, we reviewed the medical records of 1,525 tuberculosis patients at health center of Sunsan county in Kyungpook province from January 1981 to December 1990. The response rate for family examination in the first period(1981-1985) was 20.0%, and that in the second period(1986-1990) was 78.8%. The response rate for family examination was rapidly increased with the year. The kinship between the tuberculosis patients and examinees was very closely related with the response rate of family examination. The radiological finding was closely related with rate for family examination was 63.0% in the children of patients, 28.9% in wives or husbands of patients, 28.8% in other relatives and 19.9% the morbidity rate of family examinees. The severe the radiological finding, the higher the tuberculosis morbidity rate of family examinees. The prevalent rates of family examinees were 6.2% in parents, 4.3% in wives or husbands, 1.1% in children, and 1.5% in other relatives of parents. The results of this study suggest that the response rate for family examination should be increased especially for the old people, such as parents of tuberculosis patients.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the association of family support, self-efficacy, health literacy and perceived health status with health-promoting behavior (HPB) in married immigrant women. Methods: A cross-sectional based survey was conducted to collect data from married immigrant women living in Gyeongsang province. Questionnaires included Health promoting lifestyle profile II, General self - efficacy scale, Korean Health literacy assessment and perceived health status. Results: 157 subjects participated in the study (mean age, $30.47{\pm}6.83$). Their duration of living in Korea was $63.05{\pm}50.11$ months. Of the participants, 59.2% were Vietnamese. The level of HPB, perceived health status, health literacy, support of family and self-efficacy were $2.58{\pm}0.42$, $3.39{\pm}0.86$, $25.12{\pm}20.99$, $3.83{\pm}0.70$ and $3.61{\pm}0.53$ respectively. Factors affecting the HPB of the participants were support from family (${\beta}=.45$, p<.001) and self-efficacy (${\beta}=.16$, p<.05). The explanatory power of these two variables was 34.2%. Conclusion: This study suggests that the factors influencing the HPB of married immigrant women include support from family and self-efficacy. A variety of programs should be provided for families so that they can support those women to help them increase their HPB. It is recommended that more various programs be provided to increase their self- efficacy.

  • Background: It is important to investigate patient satisfaction to improve the quality of healthcare. Among the many factors that affect patient satisfaction, perceived health status has been considered as one of the major factors. Therefore, we investigated patient satisfaction through patient experience in outpatient settings according to perceived health status. Methods: This cross-sectional study using questionnaires of patient experience and perceived health status from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2015 included 4267 people aged over 19 years who met the inclusion criteria. Perceived health status was classified into three: good, fair, and poor. Questions about patient experience consisted of four items: doctor spending enough time with patients, doctor providing easy-to-understand explanation, doctor giving opportunity to ask questions or raise concerns, and doctor involving patient in decisions about care or treatment. Patient experience was classified into two: satisfied and non-satisfied. A multivariate regression model was used to analyze the data. Results: In the good perceived health status group, level of satisfaction was 79.2%, 88.5%, 83.3% and 87.2%, respectively for the four items targeting patient experience. In the poor group, level of satisfaction was 76%, 84.9%, 79.5%, and 83.1%, respectively for the four items. In multivariate logistic regression analyses, the odds ratios of good perceived health status group were 1.775 (1.347-2.338), 1.946 (1.356-2.793), 1.652 (1.218-2.240), and 1.665 (1.193-2.323) compared with the poor group. Conclusion: Perceived health status is associated with patient satisfaction. In particular, the better the perceived health status, the better the patient satisfaction through patient experience.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the present conditions and problems of oral health care in senior citizens with dementia using a qualitative research method, through focused group interviews. Methods: Data was collected for approximately one month from May 2019. The subjects were divided into two groups: care workers and family caregivers. Fifteen participants were included in the study. Results: In-depth interviews with the care workers revealed the following three categories: characteristics of senile dementia patients, oral health care in senile dementia patients, and oral health care education. In-depth interviews with the family caregivers revealed the following four categories: characteristics of senile dementia patients, oral health care in senile dementia patients, oral health care education, and burden of care. The central themes common to both the care workers and family caregivers were the challenges owing to the characteristics of senile dementia patients, poor health condition of the senile dementia patients, difficulty in oral health care of the senile dementia patients, the desire to receive oral health care education and related information, and to access the information more easily. Additional central themes specific to the care workers were, the applicability of the intervention programs, variability between the facilities, and the problems of oral health care education. An additional central theme specific to the family caregivers was the burden of care. Conclusions: It is necessary to provide oral health care education and information to care workers and family caregivers of senile dementia patients, and to manage and support the dental health professionals ready to care for senile dementia patients. In addition, support to the family caregivers should not be limited only to the financial aspects, but also consider the psychological and emotional difficulties.

  • Objective: To study the level of awareness and knowledge about cancers and associated risk factors among households in selected states of India. Methods: In the study 3070 households were interviewed from six states viz, West Bengal, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Mizoram. Results: Knowledge of cancers other than those related to tobacco was very low (prostate 8%, colon 11% ) among the communities, with a poor awareness of warning signs and symptoms. The knowledge varied from state to state. It is found that the major source of information related to cancers was television (38%) followed by friends and relatives (36%). Only about 15 % of respondents had knowledge about cancer awareness camps organized in their districts but they did not have knowledge about the organizers of the camp. Findings suggested a strong need for strengthening of DCCP. Conclusion: It is important to create awareness among community through educational programs on cancer prevention, preventable cancer risk factors, benefits of early diagnosis, and availability of screening facilities. Integration of District Cancer Control activities with NRHM could be the most cost-effective strategy to prevent cancers and rural population.
