The Role of Information Communication Capital Stock to the increase of Productivity (정보통신자본의 생산성증가에 관한 고찰)

  • This Study is to show the impact of IT capital stock accumulation on the total factor productivity in 9 industries during 1980 through 2000. We construct the If capital stock using input and output table provided by Bank of Korea (2000). Using sequence testing methodologies, we investigate the nonstationary characteristics of the relevant data and test the cointegration relationship between total factor productivity and IT capital stock. Over the past two decades, IT capital stock contributed between 0.19 to 0.07 percentage point per IT capital stock on total factor productivity. Our empirical results, therefore, do not support Solow's IT paradox in using the long period panel data case in Korea.

  • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a group of positional and geometric isomers of linoleic acid that have been used to reduce the incidence, growth and metastasis of breast, colon, prostate and gastric cancer in animals. CLA could reduce tumor growth by altering angiogenesis; a process requiring associated angiogenic factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In this study, we determined whether CLA could modulate the expression of VEGF in murine mammary tumor cells and adipocytes. The c9, t11-CLA isomer reduced VEGF transcripts and protein when mammary tumor cells were stimulated with PMA. That isomer also reduced VEGF expression in un stimulated mouse 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Since VEGF can be regulated by cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), we determined whether CLA could alter COX-2 enzyme expression and $PGE_2$ production. The c9, t11-CLA isomer reduced not only COX-2 enzyme expression but also $PGE_2$ production. Thus, c9, t11-CLA could modulate neovascularization by alteration of VEGF expression from mammary tumor cells and adipocytes by reducing COX-2 metabolites.

Wnt5a attenuates the pathogenic effects of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway in human retinal pigment epithelial cells via down-regulating β-catenin and Snail

  • Activation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway plays a pathogenic role in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and is thus a potential target for the development of therapeutics for this disease. Here, we demonstrated that Wnt5a antagonized β-catenin response transcription (CRT) induced with Wnt3a by promoting β-catenin phosphorylation at Ser33/Ser37/Thr41 and its subsequent degradation in human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. Wnt5a decreased the levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), which was up-regulated by Wnt3a. Furthermore, Wnt5a increased E-cadherin expression and decreased cell migration by down-regulating Snail expression, thereby abrogating the Wnt3a-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in human RPE cells. Our findings suggest that Wnt5a suppresses the pathogenic effects of canonical Wnt signaling in human RPE cells by promoting β-catenin phosphorylation and degradation.   • The purposes of this study were to classify somatotype was obtained from the factor scores of the upper half of body and analyze the somatometric characteristics. The sample group was drawn from boys at the ages 9 to 10 living in Pusan and Kyungsangnam-do. Data from each boy comprised 36 anthropometric measurements and 7 photographic measurements. The study reached following conclusions. 1. According to the analysis to draw somatometric factors, seven indicative factors were obtained from measurements of the upper half of body. The most significant factor "sectional size" and the second most significant factor "longitudinal size" characterized most aspects of body shape. 2. According to the analysis of somatometric characteristics by the upper half of body, they were categorized into four types; Boys in type 1 had high stature, broadest shoulders, average frame, flattest chest and quite protruded shoulder blades and belly; boys in type 2 had shortest stature, smallest frame, most sloping shoulders and flattest shoulder blades and belly; boys in type 3 had quite corpulent with average stature, rising shoulders, most protruded chest and shoulder blades and belly of protrusion close to the average; boys in type 4 had highest stature, biggest frame, broad shoulders and back, and most protruded shoulder blades and belly.

A Study on the Relationship between Influential Range and Cognition Factor of Landmark (랜드마크의 영향력 범위와 인지요인과의 관계)

  • This study investigated the influential range of landmarks and the relationship between landmarks and cognition factor so as to offer basic data to be used for the effective use and the management of landmarks. In this study, eighteen famous landmark in Seoul were selected and analyzed. The result of this study can be summarized as follows : 1) First, eighteen determining elements of cognition factors were selected via documents survey. Second, general cognition factors of landmarks were analysed using these elements through questionnaires to specialists. As a result of factor analysis, historic cultural factor, scale factor, visual form factor, locational factor and uniqueness factor were revealed. 2) According to revealed cognition factor, eighteen landmarks are categorized into four types using MDS method via questionnaire to resident in Seoul city. These four types of landmarks are: type I that are recognized by historic cultural factor; type II that are recognized by scale factor; type III that are recognized by uniqueness factor; and type IV that are recognized by visual form factor. 3) As the result of regression, the influential range of landmarks were revealed at about a 10km radius(type I : 12km type II : whole area of Seoul city≒15km, typeIII : 8.7km, typeIV : 8.5km). 4) As a result of analysing the correlation between the influential range and the cognition factor through multiple linear regression analysis, the locational factor is the main factor affecting the influential range of landmarks in every type. The uniqueness factor comes next, which affects influential range partially. 5) Except type 1, as a result of analysing the correlation between influential range and the physical heights of landmarks, a quadratic equation is revealed, showing that the influential range of landmarks over 200 meters in height shows a radical change. Landmarks can be used as reinforcement tools of legibility, effective tools for landscape management and for the improvement of a community's image. This study on the influential range of landmarks and main cognition factor can be utilized as a landmark management plan and in urban planning, such as a new town plan.

The Effect of Oxygen Transfer Rate on the Nebramycin Factor 5' Activity and Component Ratio in Streptoalloteichus hindustanus Fermentation. (Streptoalloteichus hindustanus 발효시 Nebramycin Factor 5' 역가 및 구성비율에 대한 산소전달속도의 영향)

  • Nebramycin is a complex of aminocyclitol compounds that is produced by aerobic culture in fermentation process. The major antibiotic factors produced by Streptoalloteichus hindustanus are nebramycin factor 2, 4, 5'and kanamycin A. A mutant was selected, producing nebramycin factor 5' activity 16.4 times higher than parent strain by microbiological assay using Pseudomonas aeruginosa CH-U34AF. The component ratio of nebramycin factor 5' was dramatically increased from 34% to 70% by the optimization of fermentation condition. It was found that the component ratio of nebramycin factor 5' in fermentation was especially affected by the oxygen transfer rate. Optimum oxygen transfer rate for maximal nebramycin factor 5' productivity and ratio during S. hindustanus fermentation was elucidated to $0.50 mMO_2$/min.

Reproductive Cycle of Surf Clam (Tresus keenae) in Southern Coast of Korea (남해안에 서식하는 왕우럭 (Tresus keenae)의 생식주기)

  • Gametogenesis, reproductive cycle, condition factor, and meat weight rate of the surf clam, Tresus Keenae were studied by histological observations and morphometric data based on the samples which have been collected from the south coast of Korea, from January 1995 to February 1996. The annual ranges of the mean seawater temperature and specific gravity in habitat of the surf clam were $4.9\~24.9^{\circ}C$ and 1.0210$\~$1.0266, respectively. Monthly changes in the condition factor showed in a wide range from 0.2381 to 0.2827, began to increase in January and reached the first maximum (0.2827) in April. And then the value rapidly decreased in June, thereafter, reached the second peak (0.2812) in August. The condition factor of this species showed the two peaks, and gonadal development reached sexually mature and ripe conditions during the period of these two peaks. The meat weight rate ranged from $38.0\%$ to $46.4\%$, and its change showed a similar tendency with the condition factor. The reproductive cycle of this species can be divided into five successive stages: in both sex, multiplicative (December to January, July to August), growing (January to February, September to October), mature (February to April, September to November), spawning (April to June, September to November), and degenerative and resting stage (May to July, November to January).

A Study on Photoreceptor by Using the Effect of Additives

  • We have been studied photosensitization mechanism's additive effect, of perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyl-diimide and X-phthalocyanine (charge generation materials), using the photochemical and photoelectrochemical approach. It was found that the photoreceptor on the excited state reacts with metal oxide, which creates the charge transfer on the interface of SnO2/electrolyte. In the electrode (X5P1) made of five X-phthalocyanine and single perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide layers, the cathodic photocurrent of X-phthalocyanine in the 400-600 nm region was increased by the addition of perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide. The maximum wavelength of fluorescence of perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide showed no dependence on the temperature. The addition of 4-dibenzylamino-2-methylbenzaldehyde diphenylhydrazone known as charge transport material was represented as decreasing photocurrent for X-phthalocyanine and perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide, respectively. In the electrode (X1P1) made of single X-phthalocyanine and single perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxyldiimide layers, an anodic photocurrent of about 10.5 nA was generated by addition of hydroquinone at 550 nm. And the characteristic of photoinduced discharge was shown to decrease by a factor of 5 and the speed of dark decay was increased by a factor of 1.2.

  • Human garnulocyte-colony stimulating factor(hG-CSF), a hematopoietic growth factor$^{1)}$, was produced and secreted from tobacco cell suspension. hG-CSF produced from tobacco cell suspension culture is biologically active form. The produced amount of hG-CSF is about 100${\mu}g/L$ in 9 days after inoculation.
