A Study on Feasibility of Dual-Channel 3DTV Service via ATSC-M/H

  • This paper analyzes the feasibility of a new 3DTV broadcasting service scenario via Advanced Television Systems Committee Mobile/Handheld (ATSC-M/H). We suggest a dual-channel system in which a left-view image is encoded by MPEG-2 with HD quality and a small-sized right-view image is encoded by AVC. Also, the left view is transmitted through ATSC main channel and the right view is transmitted through ATSC-M/H channel. Although the transport stream formats of two channels are different from each other, we demonstrate that it is possible for the ATSC 2.0 decoder to synchronize the display of the left and right views when both encoders use a common wall clock and time stamp. We also propose a program specific information descriptor which guarantees full compatibility with the conventional 2D HDTV and emerging mobile TV services. Finally, we provide the results of subjective visual quality assessment of the proposed system in support of its 3DTV service quality.

  • In this paper, we propose a practical method for displaying 2D/True3D mixed contents in real-time. Many companies released their 3D display recently, but the costs of producing True3D contents are still very expensive. Since there are already a lot of 2D contents in the world and it is more effective to mix True3D objects into the 2D contents than making True3D contents directly, people became interested in mixing 2D/True3D contents. Moreover, real-time 2D/True3D mixing is helpful for 3D displays because the scenario of the contents can be easily changed on playback-time by adjusting the 3D effects and the motion of the True3D object interactively. In our system, True3D objects are rendered into multiple view-point images, which are composed with 2D contents by using depth information, and then they are multiplexed with pre-generated view masks. All the processes are performed on a graphics processor. We were still able to play a 2D/True3D mixed contents with Full HD resolution in real-time using a normal graphics processor.

  • We have studied on optical properties of advanced S-IPS with a fine pitch electrode and a new finger design. Transmittance of panel increases with decreasing of width and angle of finger electrode. In order to improve transmittance, fine pitch electrode of ${\sim}2{\mu}m$ and rubbing angle of 10 degree have been adopted. Various optical performances are defined as the function of finger design and field intensify across the IPS pixel electrodes. We have developed the advanced electrode structures with a high performance. As a result, the optical properties of 42" full HD with 120Hz frequency shows high transmittance over 5%, contrast ratio of 1800:1, gray-to-gray response time of 4.4ms, respectively. And also we have studied that the moving picture quality of IPS LCD is related with design parameters of IPS cells and finger shape.

효율적인 영상 스트리밍 서비스를 위한 Cross-layer 영상 정보 공유 방법 및 선택적 재전송 기법 (Cross-layered Video Information Sharing Method and Selective Retransmission Technique for The Efficient Video Streaming Services)

  • In this paper, we proposed cross-layered approach of video codec and communication system for the efficient video streaming service. Conventional video streaming is served by divided system which consist of video codec layer and communication layer. Its disintegration causes the limitation of the performance of video streaming service. With the cross-layered design, each layer could share the information and the service is able to enhance the performance. And we proposed the selective retransmission method in communication system based on the cross-layered system that reflect the information of encoded video data. Selective retransmission method which consider the characteristics of video data improves the performance of video streaming services. We verified the proposed method with raw format full HD test sequence with H.264/AVC codec and MATLAB simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed method improves about 10% PSNR performance.

  • 최근 HD급 이상의 해상도를 가지는 영상을 위한 차세대 코덱 표준이 연구되고 있다. 이 코덱의 특징은 압축효율을 증가시키기 위해서 시간을 많이 소모시키는 복잡한 툴들을 많이 채택하고 있다는 점이다. 이는 실시간 방송에 대한 부담감으로 작용되기 때문에, 표준을 재정하는 전문가들은 속도 개선을 위한 병렬화 연구 또한 동시에 진행을 하고 있다. 병렬화 방법 중 슬라이스 단위 병렬화와 모듈 내부 병렬화가 대표적으로 논의되고 있지만, 이 두 가지 방법은 각각 시간 지연과 추가 비트 할당이라는 단점이 있기 때문에 이를 극복하기 위한 새로운 병렬화 기법이 요구되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 시간 지연과 추가비트 할당을 극복 가능한 병렬화 기법을 연구하였는데, HEVC 코덱의 구조 분석을 통해 어떻게 병렬화 해야 단점을 극복할 수 있는지 알아보고 단점을 극복한 병렬화 기법이 속도 개선을 할 수 있는지 시간 분석을 통해 알아본다. 본 논문에서는 구조 분석을 통해 알아낸 CU 단위 병렬화 기법을 제안하고 CU 단위 병렬화 기법을 HEVC Test model reference software 2.1 decoder에 적용하여 Full HD 영상에 대해 Lowdelay에서 평균 19.83%의 속도 개선을 얻었으며, Randomaccess에서 평균 22.63%의 속도 개선을 얻었다.

  • When screen size of the Flat Panel Display (FPD) becomes larger, the traditional photo-lithography using photomasks and UV lamps might not be possible to make patterns on Photo Resist (PR) material due to limitation of the mask size. Though the maskless photo-lithography using UV lasers and scanners had been developed to implement large screen display, it was very slow to apply the process for mass-production systems. The laser exposure system using 405 nm semi-conductor lasers and Digital Micromirror Devices (DMD) has been developed to overcome above-mentioned problems and make more than 100 inches FPD devices. It makes very fine patterns for full HD display and exposes them very fast. The optical engines which contain DMD, Micro Lens Array (MLA) and projection lenses are designed for 10 to 50 ${\mu}m$ bitmap pattern resolutions. The test patterns for LCD and PDP displays are exposed on PR and Dry Film Resists (DFR) which are coated or laminated on some specific substrates and developed. The fabricated edges of the sample patterns are well-defined and the results are satisfied with tight manufacturing requirements.

액정 전계 렌즈 기반의 시청구간 전환가능 디스플레이의 광학적 해석 (An Optical Analysis of Viewing-angle Switchable Display Using ELC Lens)

  • This paper proposes a private display that can adjust viewing angles by using an electric-field-driven (EFD) LC Lens. The EFD LC Lens design and simulation were analyzed by using the Extended Jones Matrix Method. The conventional method for attaching a private film to the display was difficult. In order to solve this problem, in this study, by using the EFD LC Lens, we devised a method that can view images more conveniently. We analyzed the luminance and illumination of the optical viewing distance by using the Extended Jones Matrix Method. We also measured the intensity of the viewing angles. The simulation attached the EFD LC Lens to the 14" Full HD RGB stripe wide panel. We calculated the relative luminance distribution and the luminance distribution on the viewing angle of the image at the optimum viewing distance of 60 cm, using the EFD LC Lens and the lenticular lens. The proposed method could be used to design private displays that can adjust the viewing angle of the EFD LC Lens.

  • To drive the high-image quality plasma displays of XGA and/or full-HD, we must effectively improve the driving waveform, which get the reset period for the stabilized control of wall charges, the address period to select discharge or non-discharge, and sustain period for luminance in 1 TV-frame, and also the display quality. To accomplish them, the development of the technology for the fast address discharge is required. In this paper, the correlation between the sustain-electrode gap and address discharge characteristics for the high-speed addressing was analyzed using the measurements of dynamic voltage margins. Results showed that the narrower the gap between the sustain electrodes, the narrower the with of the scan pulse became and a dynamic margin of data voltage of 29.2 V was obtained at scan pulse width of $1.0{\mu}s\;and\;V_{ramp}$ of 240 V for driving 4-inch test penal, which the gap between sustain electrodes was $65{\mu}m$.

H.264 High-Profile Intra Prediction 모듈 설계 (A design of High-Profile Intra Prediction module for H.264)

  • 본 논문에서는 AMBA 기반으로 사용될 수 있는 H.264용 High Profile Intra Prediction을 구조를 제안한다. 설계된 모듈은 한 매크로 블록 당 최대 306 cycle내에 동작한다. 제안된 Encoder 구조를 검증하기 위하여 JM 13.2로부터 reference C를 개발하였으며, reference C로부터 test vector를 추출하여 설계된 회로를 검증하였다. 우리는 Hardware cost를 줄이기 위하여 plan mode를 제거 하였고, SAD 계산 방법과 8 pixel 병렬처리 등을 사용하여 Hardware cost와 cycle을 줄이는 방법을 채택하였다. 제안된 회로는 Full HD1080@fps 영상을 133MHz clock에서 동작시킬 수 있으며, 합성결과 TSMC 0.18um 공정에 램 포함 25만gate크기 이다.

  • 지금까지 영상 콘텐츠 제작 기술의 발전은 SD(Standard Definition)에서 시작하여 HD(High Definition)와 FHD(Full High Definition)를 거쳐, UHD(Ultra High Definition)에 이르기까지 화질을 중심으로 이루어져 왔다. UHD 에 이르며 육안으로는 그 이상의 해상도로 제작된 콘텐츠와 구분하는 것이 힘들어졌으며, 이에 영상 콘텐츠 제작은 화질이 아닌 제한된 촬영 장비들로부터 촬영 방법, 영상 화각의 개선 작업 등으로 그 방향을 전환하고 있다. 이의 연장선 상에서 360 도 영상에 대한 기술개발이 활발히 이루어 지고 있다. 방송 분야에서는 360 도 영상의 실시간 스트리밍 적용 가능성이 모색되고 있는데, 이것이 가능 하려면 대량의 동영상 데이터를 실시간으로 스티칭하여 전달하는 기술이 필요하다. 따라서 고속 이미지 스티칭이 가능해질 경우 실시간 동영상 스티칭을 통해 방송 통신 분야에서의 서비스 향상에 기여할 것으로 보인다. 본 논문은 이미지의 edge 정보를 방향성을 가진 데이터로 분할하여 특징점을 추출하고, 이후 가중치를 통한 특징점 매칭으로 기존의 이미지 스티칭 방법 보다 빠른 속도의 알고리즘을 제안한다.
