  • This study investigated one-dimensional vertical infiltration to an unsaturated residual soil by numerical solutions, FDM. In order to estimate the parameters needed for numerical analysis, tire soil-water characteristic curve(SWCC) of Shinnae-dong soil, one of the most typical residual soils in Korea, were experimentally obtained. Then, the statistical analysis for obtaining the SWCC was performed. The numerical solution to the linearized governing equation for unsaturated groundwater flow provides the infiltration characteristics for the unsaturated residual soil represented by transient pressure profiles and water contents profiles.

  • This paper is concerned with a balancing motion formulation and control of the ZMP (Zero Moment Point) for a biped-walking robot that has a prismatic balancing weight or a revolute balancing weight. The dynamic stability equation of a walking robot which have a prismatic balancing weight is conditionally linear but a walking robot's stability equation with a revolute balancing weight is nonlinear. For a stable gait, stabilization equations of a biped-walking robot are modeled as non-homogeneous second order differential equations for each balancing weight type, and a trajectory of balancing weight can be directly calculated with the FDM (Finite Difference Method) solution of the linearized differential equation. In this paper, the 3dimensional graphic simulator is developed to get and calculate the desired ZMP and the actual ZMP. The operating program is developed for a real biped-walking robot IWRⅢ. Walking of 4 steps will be simulated and experimented with a real biped-walking robot. This balancing system will be applied to a biped humanoid robot, which consist legs and upper body, as a future work.

  • A new theoretical approach for analysis of stress around a tensioned anchor in rock is presented in this paper. The solution has been derived for semi-infinite elastic rock and anchor and for plane strain conditions. The method considers both the anchor head bearing plate and its grouted bond length embedded in depth. The solution of the tensioned rock anchor problem is obtained by superimposing the solutions of two simpler but fundamental problems: A distributed load applied at a finite portion (bearing plate area) of the rock surface and a distributed shear stress applied at the anchor-rock interface along the bond length. The solution of the first problem already exists and the solution of the shear stress distributed along the bond length is found in this study. To acquire a deep understanding of the stress distribution around a tensioned anchor in rock, an illustrative example is solved and stress contours are drawn for stress components. In order to verify the results obtained by the proposed solution, comparisons are made with finite difference method (FDM) results. Very good agreements are observed for the teoretical results in comparison with FDM.

  • This paper introduces a study on reliability-driven device placement using simulated annealing algorithm which can be applicable to MCM or electronic systems embedded in a spacecraft running at thermal conduction environment. Reliability of the unit's has been predicted with the devices' junction temperatures calculated from FDM solver and optimized by simulated annealing algorithm. Simulated annealing in this paper adopts swapping devices method as a perturbation. This paper describes and compares the optimization simulation results with respect to two objective functions: minimization of failure rate and minimization of average junction temperature. Annealing temperature variation simulation case and equilibrium coefficient variation simulation case are also presented at the two respective objective functions. This paper proposes a new approach for reliability optimization of MCM and electronic systems considering those simulation results.

  • Checking the stability of anisotropic plates with free edges, it is impossible that buckling loads and modes are found via existing classical methods about various loads and boundary conditions. For solving this problems. finite difference method(FDM) is used to analyze the buckling behaviors for arbitrary boundary conditions. Using FDM, it is difficult to treat the fictitious points on free edges. So, this paper analyzes buckling behaviors of analytic models with one edge free and the other edges clamped and with opposite two edges free and other two edges clamped. The various buckling loads and mode characteristics through numerical results are given for buckling behaviors of anisotropic plates on free edges.

  • Most of agricultural structures located in seashore could not avoid rapid deterioration of concrete because chloride-ion and $CO_2$ gradually penetrate into concrete. However, since most of models can be able to describe the phenomenon of penetration by using one or two dimensional models based on finite difference method (FDM), those modes can not simulate the real geometry and it takes a lot of computational time to complete even the calculation. To overcome those weaknesses, three dimensional numerical model considering time dependent variables such as surface concentration of chloride and diffusion coefficient of domain based on finite element method (FEM) was suggested. This model also included the neutralization occurred by the penetration of $CO_2$. Because the model used various sizes of tetrahedral mesh instead of equivalent rectangular mesh, it reduced the computational time to compare with FDM. As this model is based on FEM, it will be easily extended to execute multi-physics simulation including water evaporation and temperature change of concrete.

  • This study carries out a finite difference nonlinear analysis of anisotropic advanced composite plate structures with various layer sequences. In the numerical analysis of various mechanical problems involving complex partial differential equations, the finite difference method (FDM) developed in this study has an advantage over the finite element method in its ability to avoid mesh generation and numerical integration. Many studies in FDM have been made on clamped or simple boundary conditions using merely an energy approach. These approaches cannot be satisfied, however, with pivotal points along the free boundary. Therefore, this study addresses the nonlinear problem of anisotropic plates by adopting a finite difference modeling elimination of pivotal difference points in the case of a free boundary condition. Complex nonlinear behaviors of composite plate structures for various parameters, especially for layer sequences, are analyzed using the proposed approach.

  • The influence of internal water pressure under the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) on tunnel spillway is analysed using 3D FDM analysis. HEC-RAS program including 1-D hydrologic numerical model was also implemented to estimate the maximum pressure on the lining under the PMF, thereafter determined rational internal water pressure. Tunnel spillway was designed as twin tunnel and excavation and supporting stage are fully considered. Analysis was classified into the 3 cases; pressure is applied only to the left tunnel, only to right tunnel, and to both tunnels. The maximum tensile stress and axial force in supporting materials induced by water flow were compared with the critical values to assess the stablilty of the tunnel and the locations of stress concentration parts were also examined.

  • In this study, the effect of temperature and soil confining stress on geosyntheic stress-strain properties was quantified by performing the temperature dependent confined tension tests for four types of geosynthetic including woven geotextile, composite, geomembrane and geogrid specimen. Temperature instrumentation on the GRS-retaining wall constructed in Jaechon-shi area was also performed to examine the a seasonal temperature variation of geosynthetic reinforcements in the backfill. Based on the test results, a comparison was made between unconfined and confined moduli far each temperature to quantify the soil confinement and temperature effect on stress-strain properties. And it was also proposed that the simple expressions for the secant moduli of geosynthetics as a function of temperature and confining stress on geosynthetics. As a result of the FDM analysis of GRS-retaining wall, the method of considering the effect of temperature and confining stress on geosynthetic reinforcements when performing the FDM analysis of GRS-retaining wall was proposed.

  • The dynamic characteristics of externally pressurized journal bearing have been studied theoretically. The Reynolds' equation has been solved by FDM, and the dynamic coefficients have been calculated by using perturbation method. The bearing is compensated by orifice or double-pad diaphragm control valve. The effects of diaphragm initial gap and stiffness are considered. As the results of analysis, it is shown that a control valve has better performance than orifice.
