  • A computer model is developed capable of simulating the transient behavior of a pool-type liquid metal-cooled fast breeder reactor (LMFBR). The model, SIMFARP, is a fast running computer code which may be used to simulate the loss of power to any pump(s), a complete loss-of-forced cooling, and the natural circulation behavior. Eight governing equations are derived and a Runge-Kutta algorithm is applied to integrate the eight differential equations. The developed computer program is applied to two cases; loss of electric power to any pump(s), and loss of all external electric supply power without scram in Super-Phenix-I.

  • This paper develops a moving-magnet electromagnetic actuator for fast steering mirror (FSM). The actuator achieves a reasonable compromise between voice coil actuator and piezoelectric actuator. The stroke of the actuator is between the strokes of a piezoelectric actuator and a voice coil actuator, and its force output is a linear function of air gap and excitation current within our FSM travel range. Additionally, the actuator is more reliable than voice coil actuator as the electrical connection in the actuator is static. Analytically modeling the actuator is difficult and time-consuming. Alternatively, numerous finite element simulations are carried out for the actuator analysis and design. According to the design results, a real prototype of the actuator is fabricated. An experimental test system is then built. Using the test system, the force output of the fabricated actuator is evaluated. The test results validate the actuator analysis and design.

  • In order to improve seismic safety of nuclear power plant (NPP) structures in high seismicity area, seismic isolation system can be adapted. In this study, friction pendulum system (FPS) is used as the seismic isolation system. According to Coulomb's friction theory, friction coefficient is constant regardless of bearing pressure and sliding velocity. However, friction coefficient under actual situation can be changed according to bearing pressure, sliding velocity and temperature. Seismic responses of friction pendulum system with constant friction and various velocity-dependent friction are compared. The velocity-dependent friction coefficients of FPS are varied between low-and fast-velocity friction coefficients according to sliding velocity. From the results of seismic analysis of FPS with various cases of friction coefficient, it can be observed that the yield force of FPS becomes larger as the fast-velocity friction coefficient becomes larger. Also, the displacement response of FPS becomes smaller as the fast-velocity coefficient becomes larger.

  • Explicit numerical integration methods for power system transient stability simulation require very small time steps to avoid numerical instability. The EXST1 exciter model is a primary source of fast dynamics in power system transients. In case of the EXST1, the required small integration time step for entire system simulation increases the computational demands in terms of running time and storage. This paper presents a practical exciter model reduction approach which allows the increase of the required step size and thus the method can decrease the computational demands. The fast dynamics in the original EXST1 are eliminated in the reduced exciter model. The use of a larger time step improves the computational efficiency. This paper describes the way to eliminate the fast dynamics from the original exciter model based on linear system theory. In order to validate the performance of the proposed method, case studies with the GSO-37 bus system are provided. Comparisons between the original and reduced models are made in simulation accuracy and critical clearing time.

  • The laser marking system is widely used in many industrial manufacturing companies as an effective process, because it is versitile, clean, and fast to run. Minimal heat deformation and zero tool wear can be obtained using fast and non-contact process of laser marking. As an introductory level, the basic knowledges about laser marking system layout and its components are presented with diagrams. The effects, requirements, and application example of laser marking process are also described in this paper.

  • The flow from developing a machine learning model to deploying it in a production environment suffers challenges. Efficient and reliable deployment is critical for realizing the true value of machine learning models. Bridging this gap between development and publication has become a pivotal concern in the machine learning community. FastAPI, a modern and fast web framework for building APIs with Python, has gained substantial popularity for its speed, ease of use, and asynchronous capabilities. This paper focused on leveraging FastAPI for deploying machine learning models, addressing the potentials associated with integration, scalability, and performance in a production setting. In this work, we explored the seamless integration of machine learning models into FastAPI applications, enabling real-time predictions and showing a possibility of scaling up for a more diverse range of use cases. We discussed the intricacies of integrating popular machine learning frameworks with FastAPI, ensuring smooth interactions between data processing, model inference, and API responses. This study focused on elucidating the integration of machine learning models into production environments using FastAPI, exploring its capabilities, features, and best practices. We delved into the potential of FastAPI in providing a robust and efficient solution for deploying machine learning systems, handling real-time predictions, managing input/output data, and ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

  • A fast-transient repetitive control strategy for a three-phase shunt active power filter is presented in this study to improve dynamic performance without sacrificing steady-state accuracy. The proposed approach requires one-sixth of the fundamental period required by conventional repetitive control methods as the repetitive control time delay in the synchronous reference frames. Therefore, the proposed method allows the system to achieve a fast dynamic response, and the program occupies minimal storage space. A proportional-integral regulator is also added to the current control loop to eliminate arbitrary-order harmonics and ensure system stability under severe harmonic distortion conditions. The design process of the corrector in the fast-transient repetitive controller is also presented in detail. The LCL filter resonance problem is avoided by the appropriately designed corrector, which increases the margin of system stability and maintains the original compensation current tracking accuracy. Finally, experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed strategy.

  • A thermal-hydraulic system code is an essential tool for the design and safety analysis of a nuclear power plant, and its accuracy quantification is very important for the code assessment and applications. The fast Fourier transform-based method (FFTBM) by signal mirroring (FFTBM-SM) has been used to quantify the accuracy of a system code by using a comparison of the experimental data and the calculated results. The method is an improved version of the FFTBM, and it is known that the FFTBM-SM judges the code accuracy in a more consistent and unbiased way. However, in some applications, unrealistic results have been obtained. In this study, it was found that accuracy quantification by FFTBM-SM is dependent on the frequency spectrum of the fast Fourier transform of experimental and error signals. The primary objective of this study is to reduce the frequency dependency of FFTBM-SM evaluation. For this, it was proposed to reduce the cut off frequency, which was introduced to cut off spurious contributions, in FFTBM-SM. A method to determine an appropriate cut off frequency was also proposed. The FFTBM-SM with the modified cut off frequency showed a significant improvement of the accuracy quantification.

  • New Fabrication Facility (FAB) construction is performed with Building Information Modeling (BIM) based design. The BIM design data keep updated during the FAB construction. To improve fast-track construction management, a Fabrication Facility Augmented Reality (FABAR) was developed. This study introduces a FABAR system development process and shows performance evaluation results of the FABAR prototype system. The FABAR is implemented with three major modules: Augmented Reality (AR) visualization unit (Room-box) to transfer big BIM data to AR data, AR registration and tracking unit to match AR with real scape and to keep AR coordination in real, and AR data management unit to enhance usability. The prototype performance results were as follows: visualization of design BIM data via AR within 24 hours, precise AR registration and tracking registration, and appropriate usability to support FAB construction management at site. The results indicate that the FABAR is applicable for FAB construction management. Especially, the BIM data transformation method using Room-box in this study signifies a new construction management approach using fluctuating BIM design data in the fast track construction condition.
