With a series of unexpected huge losses in the financial markets around the world recently, especially in the insurance market with extreme loss cases such as catastrophes, there is an increasing demand for risk management for extreme loss exposures due to high unpredictability of those risks. For extreme risk management, to make a maximum use of the information concerning the tail part of a loss distribution, EVT(Extreme Value Theory) modelling nay be the best to analyze extreme values. The Extreme Value Theory is widely used in practice and, especially in financal markets, EVT modelling is getting popular to analyBe the effects of extreme risks. This study is to review the significance of the Extreme Value Theory in risk management and, focusing on analyzing insurer's risk capital, extreme risk is measured using the real fire loss data and insurer's specific amount of risk capital is figured out to buffer the extreme risk.
An extreme value analysis (EVA) is essential to obtain a design value for highly nonlinear variables such as long-term environmental data for wind and waves, and slamming or sloshing impact pressures. According to the extreme value theory (EVT), the extreme value distribution is derived by multiplying the initial cumulative distribution functions for independent and identically distributed (IID) random variables. However, in the position mooring of DNVGL, the sampled global maxima of the mooring line tension are assumed to be IID stochastic variables without checking their independence. The ITTC Recommended Procedures and Guidelines for Sloshing Model Tests never deal with the independence of the sampling data. Hence, a design value estimated without the IID check would be under- or over-estimated because of considering observations far away from a Weibull or generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) as outliers. In this study, the IID sampling data are first checked in an EVA. With no IID random variables, an automatic resampling scheme is recommended using the block maxima approach for a generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution and peaks-over-threshold (POT) approach for a GPD. A partial autocorrelation function (PACF) is used to check the IID variables. In this study, only one 5 h sample of sloshing test results was used for a feasibility study of the resampling IID variables approach. Based on this study, the resampling IID variables may reduce the number of outliers, and the statistically more appropriate design value could be achieved with independent samples.
The common practice to predict the characteristic structural load effects (LEs) in long reference periods is to employ the extreme value theory (EVT) for building limit distributions. However, most applications ignore that LEs are driven by multiple loading events and thus do not have the identical distribution, a prerequisite for EVT. In this study, we propose the composite extreme value modeling approach using clustering to (a) cluster initial blended samples into finite identical distributed subsamples using the finite mixture model, expectation-maximization algorithm, and the Akaike information criterion; (b) combine limit distributions of subsamples into a composite prediction equation using the generalized Pareto distribution based on a joint threshold. The proposed approach was validated both through numerical examples with known solutions and engineering applications of bridge traffic LEs on a long-span bridge. The results indicate that a joint threshold largely benefits the composite extreme value modeling, many appropriate tail approaching models can be used, and the equation form is simply the sum of the weighted models. In numerical examples, the proposed approach using clustering generated accurate extrema prediction of any reference period compared with the known solutions, whereas the common practice of employing EVT without clustering on the mixture data showed large deviations. Real-world bridge traffic LEs are driven by multi-events and present multipeak distributions, and the proposed approach is more capable of capturing the tendency of tailed LEs than the conventional approach. The proposed approach is expected to have wide applications to general problems such as samples that are driven by multiple events and that do not have the identical distribution.
Value at Risk (VaR) is widely used as an important tool for risk management of financial institutions. In this paper we discuss estimation and back testing for VaR of the portfolio composed of KOSPI, Dow Jones, Shanghai, Nikkei indexes. The copula functions are adopted to construct the multivariate distributions of portfolio components from marginal distributions that combine extreme value theory and GARCH models. Volatility models with t distribution of the error terms using Gaussian, t, Clayton and Frank copula functions are shown to be more appropriate than the other models, in particular the model using the Frank copula is shown to be the best.
VaR, a tail-related risk measure is now widely used as a tool for a measurement and a management of financial risks. For more accurate measurement of VaR, recently we are particularly concerned about the approach based on extreme value theory rather than the traditional method based on the assumption of normal distribution. However, many studies about the approaches using extreme value theory was done only for the univariate case. In this paper, we discuss portfolio risk measurements with modelling multivariate extreme value distributions by combining copulas and extreme value theory. We also discuss the estimation of ES together with VaR as portfolio risk measures. Finally, we investigate the relative superiority of EVT-copula approach than variance-covariance method through the back-testing of an empirical data.

This study proposes an analytical approximation algorithm based on extreme value theory (EVT) for the inverse of the power of the incomplete Gamma function. First, the Gumbel function is used to approximate the power of the incomplete Gamma function, and the corresponding inverse problem is transformed into the inversion of an exponential function. Then, using the tail equivalence theorem, the normalized coefficient of the general Weibull distribution function is employed to replace the normalized coefficient of the random variable following a Gamma distribution, and the approximate closed form solution is obtained. The effects of equation parameters on the algorithm performance are evaluated through simulation analysis under various conditions, and the performance of this algorithm is compared to those of the Newton iterative algorithm and other existing approximate analytical algorithms. The proposed algorithm exhibits good approximation performance under appropriate parameter settings. Finally, the performance of this method is evaluated by calculating the thresholds of space-time block coding and space-frequency block coding pattern recognition in multiple-input and multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. The analytical approximation method can be applied to other related situations involving the maximum statistics of independent and identically distributed random variables following Gamma distributions.

Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) is the core technology for improving the channel capacity compared to Single-User MIMO (SU-MIMO) by using multiuser gain and spatial diversity. Key problem for the MU-MIMO is the user selection which is the grouping the users optimally. To solve this problem, we adopt Extreme Value Theory (EVT) at the beginning of the proposed algorithm, which defines a primary user set instead of a single user that has maximum channel power according to a predetermined threshold. Each user in the primary set is then paired with all of the users in the system to define user groups. By comparing these user groups, the group that produces a maximum sum rate can be determined. Through computer simulations, we have found that the proposed method outperforms the conventional technique yielding a sum rate that is 0.81 bps/Hz higher when the transmit signal to noise ratio (SNR) is 30 dB and the total number of users is 100.
This study applies extreme value theory to get extreme value-VAR for Korean Stock market and showed the usefulness of the approach. Block maxima model and POT model were used as extreme value models and tested which model was more appropriate through back testing. It was shown that the block maxima model was unstable as the variation of the estimate was very large depending on the confidence level and the magnitude of the estimates depended largely on the block size. This shows that block maxima model was not appropriate for Korean Stock market. On the other hand POT model was relatively stable even though extreme value VAR depended on the selection of the critical value. Back test also showed VAR showed a better result than delta VAR above 97.5% confidence level. POT model performs better the higher the confidence level, which suggests that POT model is useful as a risk management tool especially for VAR estimates with a confidence level higher than 99%. This study picks up the right tail and left tail of the return distribution and estimates the EVT-VAR for each, which reflects the asymmetry of the return distribution of the Korean Stock market.
Investors mainly use PER and PBR among financial ratios for valuation and investment decision-making. I conduct an analysis of two basic financial ratios from a statistical perspective. Financial ratios contain key accounting numbers which reflect firm fundamentals and are useful for valuation or risk analysis such as enterprise credit evaluation and default prediction. The distribution of financial data tends to be extremely heavy-tailed, and PER and PBR show exceedingly high level of kurtosis and their extreme cases often contain significant information on financial risk. In this respect, Extreme Value Theory is required to fit its right tail more precisely. I introduce not only GPD but exGPD. GPD is conventionally preferred model in Extreme Value Theory and exGPD is log-transformed distribution of GPD. exGPD has recently proposed as an alternative of GPD(Lee and Kim, 2019). First, I conduct a simulation for comparing performances of the two distributions using the goodness of fit measures and the estimation of 90-99% percentiles. I also conduct an empirical analysis of Information Technology firms in Korea. Finally, exGPD shows better performance especially for PBR, suggesting that exGPD could be an alternative for GPD for the analysis of financial ratios.
VaR is used extensively as a tool for risk management by financial institutions. For convenience, the normal distribution is usually assumed for the measurement of VaR, but recently the method using extreme value theory is attracted for more accurate VaR estimation. So far, GEV and GPD models are used for probability models of EVT for the VaR estimation. In this paper, the PP model is suggested for improved VaR estimation as compared to the traditonal EV models such as GEV and GPD models. In view of the stochastic process, the PP model is regarded as a generalized model which include GEV and GPD models. In the empirical analysis, the PP model is shown to be superior to GEV and GPD models for the performance of VaR estimation.
