Stress and Mental Health by Extracurricular Learning in upper Grade Elementary School Students (초등학교 고학년 학생의 과외학습에 따른 스트레스와 정신건강)

  • Purpose: In an attempt to investigate the differences in the level of stress & mental health between extracurricular learning group and non-extracurricular learning group and level of stress and mental health by the extracurricular learning-related characteristics, this study was carried out in upper grade elementary students. Method: The subjects were 241 students living in 4 small towns in 4th, 5th and 6th grade elementary students. The data were collected by using the questionnaires, and analyzed by SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. Results: First, 64.7% of subjects were receiving extra-curricular learning, and extracurricular learning contents were the main curriculum and foreign language classes in many cases. Second, there were no differences in the level of stress and mental health between extracurricular learning group and non-extracurricular learning group, but also in the area of stress as physical, mental, emotional and behavioral stress. Third, extra-curricular learning satisfaction and learning effects are the major factor affecting mental and emotional stress and mental health. In other words, the group with high satisfaction and effectiveness by extra-curricular learning was less mentally and emotionally stressed and better for mental health than low group. Also, days per week for extracurricular learning affected physical stress and intention to continue extracurricular learning affected mental stress. Fourth, factors affecting whether the intention to continue extracurricular learning were the sex, decision-makers about whether they receive extracurricular learning, extracurricular learning satisfaction and duration of extracurricular learning. Conclusion: From the above results, The fact that the upper grade elementary school students receiving the extracurricular learning did not affect on the stress and mental health. In case of extracurricular group, the effectiveness and satisfaction about extra-curricular learning were major factors affecting mental and emotional stress as well as mental health.

Relationship between satisfaction with adolescent extracurricular activities and social withdrawal: The mediating effect of self-esteem and sense of community (청소년 체험활동 만족도가 사회적 위축에 미치는 영향: 자아존중감과 공동체의식의 매개효과)

  • This study examines the effect of satisfaction with adolescent extracurricular activities on social withdrawal with a focus on the mediating effect of self-esteem and sense of community. We used data from the 3rd wave (2012) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) collected by the National Youth Policy Institute for path analysis. Participants were 1,139 first year middle school students who participated in adolescent extracurricular activities. First, the degree of satisfaction with the adolescent extracurricular activities had an indirect effect on social withdrawal via self-esteem. Second, satisfaction with the adolescent extracurricular activities had an indirect effect on social withdrawal via a sense of community. Lastly, satisfaction with adolescent extracurricular activities had an indirect effect on social withdrawal via self-esteem and a sense of community. The research findings indicate that the level of social withdrawal is less when adolescents are satisfied with adolescent extracurricular activities and have a high level of self-esteem and sense of community. The results demonstrate that a satisfactory level of adolescent extracurricular activity would help adolescents decrease their social withdrawal by increasing the level of self-esteem and sense of community.

Exploring the Dilemma and Improvement Strategies for the Integrated Management of Extracurricular Education Programs at Duksung Women's University

  • This study was conducted with the purpose of exploring the dilemma and improvement strategies for the integrated management of extracurricular education programs at Duksung Women's University. The research method was finally composed of a procedure with a meeting of experts based on the procedure of collecting and analyzing the previous research literature. As for the contents of the study, the dilemma of the integrated management of the extracurricular education program at Duksung Women's University was presented first. Examples of dilemmas include difficulties in organizing and operating programs from the perspective of a roadmap customized for each grade level, difficulties in establishing a foundation for balanced mapping of core competencies and cultivating programs, difficulties in managing the performance of regular program monitoring and feedback improvement, and activating the linkage system between subjects and extracurricular education programs difficulties and difficulties in establishing a support system for the operation of the extracurricular education integrated management system were reflected. In addition, a strategy to complement and improve this dilemma was presented in a linkage. As a result of the study, the integrated management dilemma of Duksung Women's University's extracurricular education programs needs to be resolved in the long term through formal infrastructure such as external expert advice and expert exchange, and the development and use of related manuals should be considered aspects were analyzed. In addition, the content of this study was analyzed not only in the educational case of Duksung Women's University, but also in that it deals with cases that can be usefully referenced in most universities that develop and operate extracurricular education programs. Finally, this study presents an evidence-based practices that can be referenced in promoting the integrated management of extracurricular education programs in university sites, and the position and identity of extracurricular education throughout the university curriculum. It is judged that the significance and expected effect of the study can be obtained in that it provides an opportunity to improve from the management point of view.

  • Purpose The purpose of this study is to introduce U-CAAM(University-Competence Assessment & Accreditation Management) system which is designed to effectively manage extracurricular education programs in a university. Extracurricular education is known to be very important to increase core competences of students who have different levels of knowledge and skills as well as career plans. Design/methodology/approach In this study, U-CAAM system which is designed and developed to tackle the problems related to university extracurricular education is introduced. The case will give meaningful insights to those universities which consider to have similar environment. The survey is conducted to show the need to a systematic management environment to effectively manage the problems with operating extracurricular education programs. Findings The survey result shows that universities understand the need to manage extracurricular education programs effectively. Implementation of U-CAAM provides the practical insights related to this issue.

After-School Extracurricular Activities of Kindergarten Children : Relationships with Daily Stress (유아의 방과후 활동 경험과 일상적 스트레스와의 관계)

  • This study investigated relationships between the after-school extracurricular activities of kindergarten children and their daily stress. The subjects were 380 kindergarten children; they were interviewed regarding the degree of their daily stress. Their mothers completed questionnaires on the children's extracurricular after-school activities. Statistical analysis of the data showed that kindergarteners who participated in extracurricular after-school activities showed a higher degree of daily stress than children who did not. It was concluded that developmental appropriateness of extracurricular activities should be considered, and educational curricular and strategies to help children cope with daily stress due to excessive extracurricular activities should be prepared. Further research on this subject is recommended.

  • This study analyzed the effect of the extracurricular activity management system on user satisfaction. For this purpose, the effects of content, navigation, screen frame, design, interaction, and error handling factors on user satisfaction were analyzed. A survey was conducted on 321 students of K University located in Chungcheongbuk-do, and the research results based on the survey contents are as follows. First, content, navigation, screen frame, interactivity, and error handling, which are major elements of the extracurricular activity management system, showed statistically significant results. Second, interactivity and error handling were found to have the greatest influence on the factors affecting user satisfaction of the extracurricular activity management system. In this study, it was found that the interaction of the whole system including contents is important for continuous improvement of the extracurricular activity management system, and that it has a positive effect on user satisfaction when prompt error handling is possible.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the meaning of the extracurricular activities in the early childhood education institutions because the discussions and the discrepancy between theoretical viewpoint and reality are gradually expanded. For this purpose, the classes of three early childhood education institutes were observed, and interviews with the instructors were conducted where extracurricular activities programs were implemented. The meanings of extracurricular activities in the early childhood education institutes were 'coexistence of newness and pleasure', 'meaning as learning', 'diverse teaching media experience' and 'inevitable limit' in the reality of formal lessons and other situations. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to make comprehensive and complementary approaches between the formal curriculum and extracurricular activities for the future high quality extracurricular activity education. Continuous training and education of the instructor are required for better extracurricular activities.

The Effect of Learning Strategy, Learning Attitude, Achievement Motivation on Satisfaction of Online Extracurricular Participants (온라인 비교과 프로그램 참여자의 학습전략, 학습태도, 성취동기가 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted with students who participated in an online extracurricular after COVID-19 in order to analyze the effects of college students' learning strategy, learning attitude, and achievement motivation on satisfaction. After participating in the online extracurricular, an online survey was conducted, and responses from 163 students were collected. Based on the collected data, the study results were analyzed. The results of the study are as follows. First, learning strategy was found to have a positive effect on satisfaction. These results can be inferred that positive recognition worked in the process of actually applying the learning strategies acquired through the extracurricular to their own learning. Second, learning attitude had a positive effect on satisfaction. The learner's learning attitude to develop necessary skills through experience and the sense of achievement experienced in the process of participating in the online extracurricular had a positive effect on satisfaction. Third, achievement motivation was found to have a positive effect on satisfaction. It can be inferred that the learner's active behavior by participating in the program acts as a motivation for achievement and affects satisfaction. Finally, through this study, a plan for effectively operating extracurricular in an online environment was presented.

  • This study conducted a survey of 330 students participating in the extracurricular curriculum program at K University in Chungcheongbuk-do to analyze the impact of extracurricular satisfaction and career decision self-efficacy on career preparation behavior. The main results and implications are as follows. First, the positive perception of participation in extracurricular curriculum programs had a significant impact on career preparation behavior. Second, high career decision self-efficacy was related to active career preparation behavior. It is necessary to provide continuous career program support, provide counseling tailored to the needs of each student, and establish a systematic career diagnosis system. This study is limited to extracurricular curriculum program participants and has limitations in generalization. Comparative and analytical research is needed by measuring the performance of various educational programs conducted in universities. It is necessary to support the development and operation of various extracurricular curriculum programs that reflect the needs of society and students and to prepare continuous quality management measures.

Evidence-based Practices Convergence Issues for Advancement of Performance Analysis of Duksung Women's University Extracurricular Activities (덕성여자대학교 비교과교육과정 성과분석 고도화 근거기반 실제(evidence-based practices) 융합 쟁점)

  • This study was conducted for the purpose of convergence exploration of evidence-based practices for the advancement of performance analysis of the extracurricular activities at Duksung Women's University. The research method consisted of an expert meeting procedure along with a procedure for analyzing previous studies dealing with the performance analysis of the university's extracurricular activities in the field of pedagogy. The contents of this study consisted of presenting some facts that should be based on evidence for the advancement of performance analysis of the extracurricular activities after the establishment of the center for extracurricular activities in Duksung Women's University. And in practices, the development and diagnostic analysis of tools for diagnosing extracurricular customized learning capabilities, data-based multidimensional analysis (IR system), continuous monitoring analysis through extracurricular certification, and analysis based on feedback tools were presented in a convergence perspective and context. As a result of the study, the evidence-based practices for the advancement of the performance analysis of the extracurricular activities at Duksung Women's University guarantees the validity and stability of the performance evaluation and feedback system of the extracurricular activities at Duksung Women's University, and has a close influence on the extracurricular education work of other universities analyzed as possible.
