  • The design regulations for simple explosive storage in Korea only stipulate standards for the materials and thickness of the wall of the structure because the amount of explosives that can be stored is small. There is concern about secondary damage during an internal explosion in a simple storage facility, and it is necessary to reexamine the current standards. The numerical analysis for the TNT 15 kg explosion inside the simple storage was carried out by setting the factors using the robust experimental design method. The displacement of the structure generated under the same time condition was analyzed, and the contribution was evaluated. The contribution of concrete thickness was the highest, and the contribution of concrete strength and rebar arrangement was lower than that of concrete thickness. The reinforcement diameter contributed extremely little to the displacement. The structural standards of the simple storage that are currently applied are insufficient on blast resistance, and it is necessary to present new design standards. Therefore, the design factor to be applied later analysis and actual experiments were taken into consideration. For the design variables, the thickness of the concrete was 15 cm considering the displacement, the concrete strength was selected as general concrete considering the inlet discharge pressure, the factor with the lowest average displacement was selected for the reinforcement arrangement and the diameter of the reinforcement, the factor with the smallest level was selected in consideration of economic feasibility because the difference in displacement was low.

  • A study was made on the design of the prediction model concerning blasting vibration in a constraction site, Namgu, Daegu City. The geology in this area consists of hornfels of shale and mud underlain by quartize, of which the main strike of the geological structure is NW direction. Measurements were carried out on the top of the wall concrete water storage tank, which is burried in the ground earth. The attenuation due to the vertical wall of the concrete structure may be experted because of spherical divergency at the bottom corner of the wall by the Huygens principle. For design of blasting prediction model, thus among scaled distance(SD) may be preferable to use in the regression model, since they represents most likely the average ground condition. Judging from the regression results, the cube root method may be more suitable for this area. The SD values for the maximum allowable vibration velocity of 0.5 cm/s, in this area are 22.5, 28.0 and 30.6 for the significance level of 50%, 95% and 99%, respectively.

  • On August 12, 2015, two huge explosions were accidently happened in Tianjin port, China. The explosion energies of the two explosions were similar to those of TNT 3 tons and TNT 21 tons. Until now, the cause of the explosions was not clearly announced but some guesses of the cause were released. One of the possible cause of the explosion is the generation of explosive acetylene gas from the chemical reaction between $CaC_2$ and spraying water to extinguish fire happened at the storage site of different chemical compounds. The explosion of acetylene gas might ignite the explosion of 800 tons of ammonium nitrate. In this study, the explosion due to the scenario was analyzed in order to check that such a chemical reaction can produce the huge explosion observed at the Tianjin accident.

  • With the development of modern society, there have been great technical advances, and the meaning, shape, and type of preservation objects have also become diverse. However, the legislation of executives established in 1961 has nt yet been revised realistically. Thatses administrative problems related to the usge and storage of explosives. In this study, the cases of civilian's question and thought that had been submitted to the government agency were surveyed. In order to analyze the effects of preservation object, ENPro3.1, which is a simulation program to analyze the sound pressure, was used to estimate the blast pressure when a magazine containing preservation objects exploded. With the damage due to the blast pressure, the problem with the safe distance depending on the preservation object levels was investigated. From the investigation, the blast pressures in the two cases with the artificial structures at the real distance 309 m and without the artificial structures at the legitimate standard space distance 440 m, were found to be 123 dB(L) and 138 dB(L), respectively. That means the influence of blast pressure in shorter distance with artificial structures is 15 dB(L) lower than longer distance without them. Therefore, it is recommended to apply the preservation distance based on the engineering analysis with a consideration of surrounding environment.

  • The ISO document of ISO/TC/190/SC3/WG11/N11 is a working draft of international standard (WD) dealing with analytical method for the determination of explosives and related compounds using high performance liquid chromatography. The scope of this WD covers the storage of samples, preparing test portion, extraction and instrumentation. The main purpose of this study was to improve the extraction conditions which were already adopted in the WD. For this purpose, mechanical shaking method could be corresponded up to 18 hours of ultrasonic bath extraction in the WD was tested. Methanol was also tested with the intention of being added as an extracting solvent other than acetonitrile in the WD. According to the results, 16 hours of mechanical shaking method showed statistically the same effectiveness as that of 18 hours of ultrasonic bath extraction. In case of extracting solvent, methanol also showed statistically the same extraction capability as acetonitrile for DNB, TNT, 2-A-DNT and 2,4-DNT. However, the recovery rate of TNB with methanol extraction was 40% higher than that of acetonitrile extraction. Through adding mechanical shaking method into committee draft (cf. the next stage draft of the WD during the process for making international standard), ISO standard of analyzing explosives and related compounds in soil would become more useful in dealing with huge number of field samples in the laboratory. In other aspect, adopting methanol as an alternative extracting solvent would be very effective in the terms of exchangeability with GC-ECD/MS method which is being developed by German experts.

  • In the military, ammunition and explosives stored and managed can cause serious damage if mishandled, thus securing safety through the utilization of ammunition reliability data is necessary. In this study, exploratory data analysis of ammunition inspection records data is conducted to extract reliability information of stored ammunition and to predict the ammunition condition code, which represents the lifespan information of the ammunition. This study consists of three stages: ammunition inspection record data collection and preprocessing, exploratory data analysis, and classification of ammunition condition codes. For the classification of ammunition condition codes, five models based on boosting algorithms are employed (AdaBoost, GBM, XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost). The most superior model is selected based on the performance metrics of the model, including Accuracy, Precision, Recall, and F1-score. The ammunition in this study was primarily produced from the 1980s to the 1990s, with a trend of increased inspection volume in the early stages of production and around 30 years after production. Pre-issue inspections (PII) were predominantly conducted, and there was a tendency for the grade of ammunition condition codes to decrease as the storage period increased. The classification of ammunition condition codes showed that the CatBoost model exhibited the most superior performance, with an Accuracy of 93% and an F1-score of 93%. This study emphasizes the safety and reliability of ammunition and proposes a model for classifying ammunition condition codes by analyzing ammunition inspection record data. This model can serve as a tool to assist ammunition inspectors and is expected to enhance not only the safety of ammunition but also the efficiency of ammunition storage management.
