  • For investigating whether the MARSSIM nonparametric test has sufficient statistical power when a site has a specific contamination distribution before conducting a final status survey (FSS), a novel approach was proposed to predict the release probability of the site. Five distributions were assumed: lognormal distribution, normal distribution, maximum extreme value distribution, minimum extreme value distribution, and uniform distribution. Hypothetical radioactivity populations were generated for each distribution, and Sign tests were performed to predict the release probabilities after extracting samples using Monte Carlo simulations. The designed Type I error (0.01, 0.05, and 0.1) was always satisfied for all distributions, while the designed Type II error (0.01, 0.05, and 0.1) was not always met for the uniform, maximum extreme value, and lognormal distributions. Through detailed analyses for lognormal and normal distributions which are often found for contaminants in actual environmental or soil samples, it was found that a greater statistical power was obtained from survey units with normal distribution than with lognormal distribution. This study is expected to contribute to achieving the designed decision error when the contamination distribution of a survey unit is identified, by predicting whether the survey unit passes the statistical test before undertaking the FSS according to MARSSIM.

  • Recently, growing emphasis has been placed on the installation of rain gardens. However, previous rain garden studies have mainly focused on physicochemical effects such as rainfall runoff management and water quality improvement. Therefore, this study aims to investigate general perceptions of rain gardens and landscape aesthetics among rain garden visitors. To achieve this goal, a survey of 100 rain garden visitors was conducted, gathering information about their general perceptions of rain gardens and landscape aesthetics at three pre-selected rain garden locations. Results showed that rain garden recognition was limited to 34% of the respondents, indicating that most people were not aware of rain gardens and were unable to notice differences between rain gardens and traditional gardens. However, stronger support for rain gardens was observed among those who were aware of the concept, those who recognized that rain garden planting types are differentiated from traditional gardens, and those who rated positively the landscape aesthetic value of rain gardens. The main findings are expected to encourage further studies of quantitative indicators by conducting a correlation analysis between aesthetics and functionality of rain gardens.

  • This study examines the stability of Sungsu bridge which was issued nine years ago because of its collapse accident and now is on the progress of extension work in each construction stage by construction monitoring system. From this study, the measured value in each construction stage of anchorage truss and suspended truss shows the agreement with the analytical values up to 60~110 percents, and the elements' stresses emanating from the pre-loading stage, are also similar to the analytical value. Regarding these results, it is expected that each member has enough stiffness and the construction condition is satisfactory. In addition, it is expected that the transverse members and sway bracing bolts integrate completely the existing truss and new attached truss as a one body from the result of the vibration test to find out the integration rates.

  • The genetic relationships between different populations and breeds of exotic dairy goats in Thailand were studied using 12 microsatellite markers. Blood samples were obtained from 211 goats from Department of Livestock Development breeding and research farms: 29 Anglonubian (AN), 21 Alpine (AP), 23 Jamunapari (JAM), 50 Saanen (SN), and 88 Toggenburg (TG). Five of the 12 microsatellite markers were found to be polymorphic. A mean of 7.40 alleles per locus was found, with a range from 5 (SPS115 and ETH225) to 11 (TGLA122). We found 24, 27, 19, 32, and 24 alleles in the AN, AP, JAM, SN, and TG breeds, respectively; 37 alleles were present in all breeds. The mean number of alleles in each population ranged from 3.2 (ETH225 locus) to 7.6 (TGLA122 locus). Genetic variability within the breeds was moderate as evidenced by the mean expected heterozygosity of 0.539. The average observed heterozygosity across the 5 markers in all breeds was 0.529 with the maximum observed at the BM1818 locus (0.772) and the minimum at the ETH225 locus (0.248). The observed and expected heterozygosity for all breeds for the 5 microsatellite markers ranged from 0.419 to 0.772 and 0.227 to 0.792, respectively. On the basis of their means, the TGLA122 and BM1818 loci were the most suitable markers for distinguishing genetic diversity among the goats. The estimated average $F_{is}$ value for the breeds ranged from -0.044 (ETH225) to 0.180 (SPS115), while the estimated average $F_{st}$ value ranged from 0.021 (SPS115) to 0.104 (ETH10). These results indicated that TGLA122 and BM1818 markers are suitable to be used for aiding conservation and breeding improvement strategies of dairy.

  • Cookies containing wheat flour mixed with 10, 30 or 50% esterified with octenylsuccinic anhydride (OSA, 3%) and dry-heated ($130^{\circ}C$, 2 hr) high amylose rice (Goami 2) starch (DH-OSAR) were prepared and then their physical and digestive properties were evaluated. When the amount of added DH-OSAR increased, the hardness and brittleness of the cookies decreased, and L (brightness) value increased. For the digestive properties, the cookies containing 50% DH-OSAR significantly increased the amount of slowly digestible starch (SDS), and decreased the amount of rapidly digestible starch (RDS), resulting in the lowest expected Glycemic Index (eGI) among tested cookies. Although the cookies containing DHOSAR were inferior to the control, the addition of xanthan gum (0.5% based on total powder amount) significantly improved their textural and sensory properties. Specially, the cookies containing 50% DH-OSAR and the addition of 0.5% xanthan gum showed the lowest eGI value, maintaining the improved textural and sensory properties.

  • The Juam reservoir, hydrological investigations on the catchment environment and pollutants inflow have been carried out simultaneously. The average COD in 1992 observed in Juam reservoir was 2.3 mg/L, and reached to 2.72 mg/L in 2005 that is increased 0.23 mg/L for 13 years. Following this trend, the water duality is expected to deteriorate down to the second-grade water quality exceeding the 3 mg/L limit in 2010. The concentration exceeding the value of 46.5 $mg/m^3$ will not guarantee the water quality better than $2^{nd}$ grade drinking water resource since correlative between COD and chl-a is y=0.0732x+2.5953 its $r^2=0.8141$. This result will help control the algal growth in the future by taking into account the expected value as a monitoring target.

  • It is expected that the korean power retail market will be reorganized someday. Thus, this study analyzes the changes in consumers' utility level when new companies enter the retail market and offer various bundled services. For the analysis, the utility function of the consumers was estimated using the conjoint choice method. The results of the analysis can be summarized in two-folds. First, consumer will still prefer KEPCO in electricity sales. Therefore, difficulties can be expected when new companies enter the power retail market. Second, consumers do not favor bundled services in the electricity market also. Bundled services would not provide as much as utility each service provide separately.
