Fires and Burns Occurring in an Electrocautery after Skin Preparation with Alcohol during a Neurosurgery

  • While there are reports regarding burns occurring to patients during the surgery, there are little reports concerning the incidents of the burns related to neurosurgical operations. Moreover, in Korea, even surveys and statistics on the incidents of burns in operating rooms are not known. This report explores burns occurring to a patient in an electrocautery scenario after disinfecting the surgical site with alcohol during the preparation of a neurosurgical operation in an operating room where there is much exposure to oxygen. The authors show a case of a 33-year-old male patient who undergoing evacuation of hematoma on occipital lesion, suffered second degree burns as a result of surgical fires.

  • Some large accidents in tunnels in recent years, such as Mont Blanc, Gotthard and Tauern tunnels, have lead to an increasing attention for tunnel safety and necessity of tool for quantitative risk assesment of road tunnel. And the purpose of this study is to develop the quantitative risk assesment tool for the application of road tunnel. The objectives of this paper are as follows : (1) analyze of traffic accident rates in tunnel, (2) make out scenario for fire accidents, (3) develop the evacuation model and FED calculation model, (4) Present the results from quantitative risk assesment for the model tunnel according with the fire heat release rates and distances of cross passage.

  • In Korea, in the case of fire scenarios in performance design, it is assumed that the sprinkler is not working. In addition, it does not applicate various fire conditions. Therefore it is not enough that the accuracy about fire scenario. In foreign countries, reseach is being conducted to predict the casualities that can occur due to fire in the building space through statistical risk analysis. Also, research is consistently conducting for design that consider the sprinker probability of operation. Therefore, to analyze the fire risk of each building in Korea, the risk was analyzed using statistical data. As a result, the risk of casualties that can occur for each building use was analyzed as 0.6(persons/cases) for residential buildings, 0.25(persons/cases) for sales facilities, and 0.12(persons/cases) for buisiness facilities.

  • Recently, evacuation safety of a resident of building become the major concern, because building has been higher and more complicated. Buildings in Korea should install the natural smoke venting or mechanical smoke exhaust equipment according to the building law. The smoke control is the most important to guarantee the evacuation safety. This study evaluate the influence to the height and temperature of smoke layer by enlarging smoke vent size and operating sprinkler system using CFAST (Version 6). Smoke venting size is larger, the effect to height and temperature of smoke layer is increased in below 5 MW fire. But, the correlation of these is decreased in above 10 MW fire. The case that opened smoke vent and sprinklered are applied, life safety criteria are satisfied regardless of fire size. After design the fire scenario according to the service and size of building. Install the smoke vent suitable for the fire size and verify that by experiment or simulation.

Derivations of Positive Pressure Condition for Development of Foldable Safe Pathway in Railway Tunnel Fires (철도터널화재용 접이식 대피통로 개발을 위한 양압 조건 도출)

  • The Korea Foldable safe pathway system is an evacuation support system to get temporary evacuation route in railway tunnel and large space fires. A prevention smoke screen is unfolded in fires and it is needed to prevent heat and smoke from fire source. Therefore, ventilation system for positive pressure condition is equipped with foldable safe pathway system. Numerical analyses of temperature and pressure distribution with distance from fire source were performed considering fire scenario of new train vehicle. The smoke temperatures did not exceed $200^{\circ}C$ that distance from the fire source was more than 20 m and smoke pressure was reduced with distance from fire source. Maximum smoke pressure was 14 Pa and average pressure was 6 Pa in position of prevention smoke screen. As results, to install foldable safe pathway system, ventilation system is need to maintain 6 Pa positive pressure condition.

  • As part of the Fire Evacuation Service scenario using mobile applications, this study aims to find the appropriate colors to be used in the interface of the application and to define and apply colors that can positively and reliably affect human unstable psychology in the course of evacuating the room in case of fire. In the situation of fire, proper design and placement of the colored escape guidance interface is important, taking into account the psychology of the occupants. However, literature and previous research have shown that colors used to induce evacuation are not suitable for effective evacuation in case of fire. In this study, the purpose of the study was to provide a color that would provide psychological stability in the event of a evacuation in consideration of the psychological issues of those who are still in need of shelter, and to use it to help induce an efficient evacuation in the event of a disaster. Using the image evaluation method, the form and color of images have been derived through frequency analysis to a number of unspecified people, and the main and secondary colors of images were analyzed through KSCA color analysis. Finally, the final application color was constructed through mutual verification between the results by comparing and analyzing the colors obtained through the image evaluation analysis results and the KSCA color analysis results. The results of the study showed that the green line can help stabilize the human mind through comparative analysis with prior research. Therefore, the main color for guiding calm and calm applications in case of fire escape is proposed in the green line. In this study, the experiment with image evaluation cannot accurately measure the effect of factors on color among complex factors. A subsequent study of this will help quantify images if it allows the subject matter of color and image to be defined to some extent through factor analysis.

  • The proper functioning of critical points on transport infrastructure is decisive for the entire network. Tunnels and bridges certainly belong to the critical points of the surface transport network, both road and rail. Risk management should be a holistic and dynamic process throughout the entire life cycle. However, the level of risk is usually determined only during the design stage mainly due to the fact that it is a time-consuming and costly process. This paper presents a simplified quantitative risk analysis method that can be used any time during the decades of a tunnel's lifetime and can estimate the changing risks on a continuous basis and thus uncover hidden safety threats. The presented method is a decision support system for tunnel managers designed to preserve or even increase tunnel safety. The CAPITA method is a deterministic scenario-oriented risk analysis approach for assessment of mortality risks in road tunnels in case of the most dangerous situation - a fire. It is implemented through an advanced risk analysis CAPITA SW. Both, the method as well as the resulting software were developed by the authors' team. Unlike existing analyzes requiring specialized microsimulation tools for traffic flow, smoke propagation and evacuation modeling, the CAPITA contains comprehensive database with the results of thousands of simulations performed in advance for various combinations of variables. This approach significantly simplifies the overall complexity and thus enhances the usability of the resulting risk analysis. Additionally, it provides the decision makers with holistic view by providing not only on the expected risk but also on the risk's sensitivity to different variables. This allows the tunnel manager or another decision maker to estimate the primary change of risk whenever traffic conditions in the tunnel change and to see the dependencies to particular input variables.

Analysis of Evacuation Route Selection Pattern of Occupant according to Installation Type of Exit Light and Opening/Closing Direction of Door (유도등 설치유형 및 피난구 출입문 개폐방향에 따른 재실자의 피난경로 선택패턴분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of occupant's path selection on the shape of the pictogram and the opening/closing of the door. This study was carried out through a simulation experiment using computer virtual reality. Exit light pictogram for exit door and exit light pictogram for passage were arranged for each scenario in type T corridor and type + corridor. The computer graphic was used to carry out the simulation. In addition, we analyzed the response of human behavior according to the two directions (left and right) of exit light pictogram for exit door and the effect of opening direction of doorway. In addition, the change of decision-making according to the presence or absence of exit light pictogram for passage was confirmed. The results of the direction selection response were as follows. First, in the case of the T-shaped corridor, if the exit light was not installed on the door, it was influenced by the opening direction of the door. Second, when the exit light is attached to the door, the selectivity in the direction that matches the exit light pictogram direction is high. As a result, it was confirmed that the pictogram direction of the exit light influenced the evacuation route selection of the occupants.

  • It has been an issue among researchers that the tsunamis that occurred on the west coast of Japan in 1983 and 1993 damaged the coastal cities on the east coast of Korea. In order to predict and reduce the damage to the Korean Peninsula effectively, it is necessary to install offshore tsunami observation instruments as part of the system for the early detection of tsunamis. The purpose of this study is to recommend the optimal deployment of tsunami observation instruments in terms of the higher probability of tsunami detection with the minimum equipment and the maximum evacuation and warning time according to the current situation in Korea. In order to propose the optimal location of the tsunami observation equipment, this study will analyze the tsunami propagation phenomena on the east sea by considering the potential tsunami scenario on the west coast of Japan through numerical modeling using the COrnell Multi-grid COupled Tsunami (COMCOT) model. Based on the results of the numerical model, this study suggested the optimal deployment of Korea's offshore tsunami observation instruments on the northeast side of Ulleung Island.

The Finding Factors and Application Plans of the Volcanic Disaster Maps through Case Studies (사례분석을 통한 화산재해지도 구성요소 도출 및 활용 방안)

  • This study aims to investigate the characteristics and to classify the foreign volcanic disaster maps. Authors try to extract the components of volcanic disaster maps and apply them to the Mt. Baekdu volcano that receives worldwide attention recently has been on an early stage in Korea. Internationally, volcano ash disaster maps are derived and reviewed through three analytical framework components: Hazard Map, Risk Map, and Damage Map. These derived components of volcano ash disaster mapping systems are: 1) cumulative map of past disaster records, 2) probabilistic risk map, 3) scenario-based map and case-by-case utilization maps (evacuation response type, emergency information type, disaster preparedness education type) based on this components are presented.
