  • Dense crack-free yttria film with 10 $\mu m$ thickness was prepared on aluminum by aerosol deposition. X-ray diffraction pattern on the film showed that it contained the same crystalline phase as the raw powder. Transmission electron microscopy revealed a nanostructured yttria film with grains smaller than 100 nm. Tensile adhesion strength between the film and aluminum substrate was 57.8 $\pm$ 6.3MPa. According to the etching test with $CF_4-O_2$ plasma, the etching rate of the yttria film was 1/100 that of quartz, 1/10 that of sintered alumina and comparable to that of sintered yttria.

  • We fabricated durable anti-reflective(AR) layer with silica globular coating on polymer by two steps. Firstly, nano-protrusions of polymer were formed by plasma etching known as R.I.E(reactive ion etching) process. Secondly, silica globular coating was deposited on polymer nano-protrusions for mechanically protective and optically enhancing AR layers by RF magnetron sputter. And then durable antireflective polymers were synthesized adjusting plasma power and time, working pressures of RIE and RF sputtering processes. Consequently, we acquired the average transmission (94.10%) in the visible spectral range 400-800 nm and the durability of AR layer was verified to sustain its transmission until 5,000 numbers by rubber test at a load of 500 gf.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effect of incorporating nanoparticles of silver (NAg) and amorphous calcium phosphate (NACP) into a self-etching primer of a resin cement on the microtensile bond strength of dentin, regarding the proven antibacterial feature of NAg and remineralizing effect of NACP. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Flat, mid-coronal dentin from 20 intact extracted human third molars were prepared for cementation using Panavia F2.0 cement. The teeth were randomly divided into the four test groups (n=5) according to the experimental cement primer composition: cement primer without change (control group), primer with 1% (wt) of NACP, primer with 1% (wt) of physical mixture of NACP+Nag, and primer with 1% (wt) of chemical mixture of NACP+Nag. The resin cement was used according to the manufacturer's instructions. After storage in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 h, the bonded samples were sectioned longitudinally to produce $1.0{\times}1.0mm$ beams for micro-tensile bond strength testing in a universal testing machine. Failure modes at the dentin-resin interface were observed using a stereomicroscope. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc tests and the level of significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS. The lowest mean microtensile bond strength was obtained for the NACP group. Tukey's test showed that the bond strength of the control group was significantly higher than those of the other experimental groups, except for group 4 (chemical mixture of NACP and NAg; P=.67). CONCLUSION. Novel chemical incorporation of NAg-NACP into the self-etching primer of resin cement does not compromise the dentin bond strength.

  • The adhesion strength and high temperature/high humidity reliability of polyetherimide (PEI) adhesive on silicon wafer after being treated by each reactive ion etching (RIE) Aluminum (Al)-chelate adhesion promoter were investigated. 180$^{\circ}$ peel test and <85$^{\circ}C$ 85%> humidity test were performed for the initial adhesion strength and high temperature/high humidity reliability, respectively. For investigating surface effect scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), deionized (DI)-water contact angle studies were carried out. To investigate RIE effect, PEI was treated with $^O_2$ RIE, and then laminated. The initial peel strength increased slightly from 1.6 kg/cm for the first 2 minutes, and then decreased. High temp/high humid resistance decreased rapidly by RIE etching. RIE treatment on PEI affected on both of roughness and hydrophilicity increase. Aluminum-chelate adhesion promoter was coated by spinning on silicon wafer. The initial peel strength showed no effect of adhesion promoter treatment, but high temp/high humidity resistance increased remarkably. Al-chelate adhesion promoter did not affect the roughness but increased hydrophilicity.

  • In micromechanical system (MEMS) such as microactuators. thin film has been widely used as structural material. MEMS materials have difference with bulk in terms of mechanical properties. So, we design the advanced test structure for micromechanical properties of MEMS. The designed structure includes the newly developed pre-crack and it is driven by electrostatic force. To measure the fracture toughness, the pre-crack formation in the test structure is developed with conventional etching process. The advanced test structure is fabricated by application of semiconductor technology. After this, we propose analytical methodology to evaluate the fracture toughness and fatigue properties through a prediction of crack behavior from the variations of stiffness and frequency. Additionally, life time of a mirror plane used in DVD(Digital Video Disk) is measured as a function of capacitance and applied voltage under the accelerated conditions. Ultimately, we propose the method to evaluate the micromechanical reliabilities of the MEMS materials using the advanced test structure.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of the C-factor on the bond strength of a 6th generation self-etching system by measuring the microtensile bond strength of four types of restorations classified by different C-factors with an identical depth of dentin. Eighty human molars were divided into four experimental groups, each of which had a C-factor of 0.25, 2, 3 or 4. Each group was then further divided into four subgroups based on the adhesive and composite resin used. The adhesives used for this study were AQ Bond Plus (Sun Medical, Japan) and XenoIII (DENTSPLY, Germany). And composite resins used were fantasists (Sun Medical, Japan) and Ceram-X mono (DENTSPLY, Germany). The results were then analyzed using one-way ANOVA, a Tukey's test, and a Pearson's correlation test and were as follows. 1. There was no significant difference among C-factor groups with the exception of groups of Xeno III and Ceram-X mono (p<0.05). 2. There was no significant difference between any of the adhesives and composite resins in groups with C-factor 0.25, 2 and 4. 3. There was no correlation between the change in C-factor and microtensile bond strength in the Fantasista groups. It was concluded that the C-factor of cavities does not have a significant effect on the microtensile bond strength of the restorations when cavities of the same depth of dentin are restored using composite resin in conjunction with the 6th generation self-etching system.

  • PURPOSE. To evaluate the effects of hydrogen peroxide pretreatment and heat activation of silane on the shear bond strength of fiber-reinforced composite posts to resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The specimens were prepared to evaluate the bond strength of epoxy resin-based fiber posts (D.T. Light-Post) to dual-curing resin cement (RelyX U200). The specimens were divided into four groups (n=18) according to different surface treatments: group 1, no treatment; group 2, silanization; group 3, silanization after hydrogen peroxide etching; group 4, silanization with warm drying at $80^{\circ}C$ after hydrogen peroxide etching. After storage of the specimens in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours, the shear bond strength (in MPa) between the fiber post and resin cement was measured using a universal testing machine. The fractured surface of the fiber post was examined using scanning electron microscopy. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc analysis with Tukey's HSD test (${\alpha}=0.05$). RESULTS. Silanization of the fiber post (Group 2) significantly increased the bond strength in comparison with the non treated control (Group 1) (P<.05). Heat drying after silanization also significantly increased the bond strength (Group 3 and 4) (P<.05). However, no effect was determined for hydrogen peroxide etching before applying silane agent (Group 2 and 3) (P>.05). CONCLUSION. Fiber post silanization and subsequent heat treatment ($80^{\circ}C$) with warm air blower can be beneficial in clinical post cementation. However, hydrogen peroxide etching prior to silanization was not effective in this study.

  • $Y_2O_3$ ceramic specimens were fabricated from the granular powder, obtained by spray drying process from the slurry. The slurry was prepared by mixing PVA binder, NaOH for Ph control, PEG and $Y_2O_3$ powder. The $Y_2O_3$ specimen was shaped in size of ${\phi}14mm$ and then sintered at $1650^{\circ}C$. The characteristics, microstructure, densities and plasma resistance of the $Y_2O_3$ specimens were investigated with the function of forming pressure and sintering time. $Y_2O_3$ specimens were exposed under the $CHF_3/O_2/Ar$ plasma, the dry etching treatment of specimens was carried out by the physical reaction etching of $Ar^+$ ion beam and the chemical reaction etching of $F^-$ ion decomposed from $CHF_3$. With increasing sintering time, $Y_2O_3$ specimens showed relatively high density and strong resistance in plasma etching test.

  • The major influencing factors on the strength of all-ceramic crowns are types of dental ceramics, fabrication techniques, methods of abutment preparation and cementation modes of all-ceramic restorations. Zinc phosphate cement and glass-ionomer cement were used as an early lot-ing media for all-ceramic crowns. Recently many studies have reported that resin cements have more advantages in increasing the fracture strength of restorations comparing with zincphosphate cement and glass-ionomer cement. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of etching, silane treatment, sandblasting and dentin bonding agents on fracture strengths of dental ceramics. 40 flat dentin specimens and 40 ceramic discs of 1.5mm thickness and 8mm diameter were fabricated, and divided into 4 groups according to surface treatments. Surface treatments before cementation were as follows Group I : (ceramic) : HF etching - silane treatment - application of bonding resin (dentin) : application of dentin bonding agent Group II : (ceramic) : sandblasting - application of bonding resin (dentin) : application of dentin bonding agent Group III : (ceramic) : application of bonding resin (dentin) : application of dentin bonding agent Group IV : (ceramic) : HF etching - silane treatment - application of bonding resin (dentin) : no dentin bonding procedure Dentin specimens and ceramic discs were cemented with dual cure resin cement, and went through thermocycling. Compressive stress es were loaded on the centers of ceramic discs with Instron test-ing machine, and fracture strengths resistance for catastrophic fracture were measured The results were as follows. 1. The group I showed the highest fracture resistance. The next was group II And group III, IV followed. 2. There was a significant difference in the mean value of fracture strengths between group I and group III (p<0.05), but no significant differences between group I and group II, and group II and group III (p>0.05). 3. There was a significant difference in the mean value of fracture strengths between group I and group IV (p<0.05).
