  • A new ethanol dehydration process utilizing a thermally coupled distillation column is proposed to reduce the energy requirement of the existing dehydration processes. An entrainer of benzene is used in the proposed system having the column profile similar to the equilibrium composition profile for the maximum distillation column efficiency, and the feed composition is arranged to close to the boundary of different distillation regions. It is found that the proposed distillation system gives some 18% of energy saving over the existing process. In addition, design guidelines are suggested for other azeotropic distillation process.

  • The reduction behavior of $Nb_2O_5$ in aluminum containing self-reducing briquettes(SRNB) was investigated. The time required for slag/metal equilibrium was estimated as about 20 minutes from the addition of SRNB on to the surface of molten steel. The maximum yield of Nb was expected with the slag composition of $60\%CaO-40\%Al_2O_3$. When $CaCO_3$ was used as a flux, the oxidation loss of Al by $CO_2$ should be compensated, and the chemical equivalent ratio of Al to $Nb_2O_5$ of about 1.43 was required to maximize the yield of Nb.

  • Electrodeposited Zn-Ni alloy coatings are of particular interest for improving the corrosion resistance of steel in a number of enviornments. Of particular interest is the relationship between composition, structure and corrosion rate. This paper firstly reviews the literature regarding composition-structure relationships of Zn-Ni electrodeposits and compares them with the equilibrium phase diagram. Secondly, research was carried out on a wide range of coatings which were produced in the laboratory and their structure and corrosion rates determined. It was found that unambiguous identification of phases from XRD data can be difficult. Maximum corrosion resistance of deposits is obtained at 12-13% Ni, with a $\gamma$ phase structure and predomination of (600) and (411) reflections. Compatibility is important with regard to chromate conversion coatings.

  • Mathematical modeling of combustion characteristics in HVOF thermal spray processes was carried out on the basis of equilibrium chemistry. The main objective of this work was the development of a computation code which allows to determine chemical composition of combustion products, adiabatic flame temperature, thermodynamic and transport properties. The free energy minimization method was employed with the descent Newton-Raphson technique for numerical solution of systems of nonlinear thermochemical equations. Adiabatic flame temperature was calculated by using a Newton#s iterative method incorporating the computation module of chemical composition. The performance of this code was verified by comparing computational results with data obtained by ChemKin code and in the literature. Comparisons between the calculated and measured flame temperatures showed a deviation less than 2%. It was observed that adiabatic flame temperature augments with increase in combustion pressure; the influence was significant in the region of low pressure but becomes weaker and weaker with increase in pressure. Relationships of adiabatic flame temperature, dissociation ratio and combustion pressure were also analyzed.

  • High-pressure phase behavior for the binary mixture of 1-propanol with supercritical $CO_2$ has been measured by means of a high-pressure phase equilibrium apparatus equipped with a variable-volume view cell. The equilibrium loci of the pressure - composition and pressure - temperature were obtained for the binary mixture of 1-propanol + $CO_2$ system at 305.15 K, 313.15 K, 323.15 K and 333.15 K, and from 2 MPa to 11 MPa. The critical temperature of the mixture increased with the temperature. The pressure-composition line for the binary mixture of $CO_2$-1-propanol system showed a typical type-II phase behavior. The experimental P-x envelopes were correlated by using the Peng-Robinson equation of state in a satisfactory manner to obtain the parameters with $k_{ij}=0.116$ and ${\eta}_{ij}=-0.065$.

  • Pyroprocessing has been developed for the purpose of resolving the current spent nuclear fuel management issue and enhancing the recycle of valuable resources. An electrolytic reduction of the pyroprocessing is a process to reduce oxides into metals using LiCl as an electrolyte and requires a post-treatment process due to the inclusion of residual salt in porous metal products. A vacuum distillation has been adopted for various molten salt systems and could be applied to the post-treatment process of the electrolytic reduction. The residual salt in the metal products includes LiCl, alkali chlorides, and alkaline earth chlorides. In this paper, vapor pressures of chlorides have been estimated and the composition changes on the residual liquid during the vacuum distillation process have been calculated. A model combining a material balance and vapor-liquid equilibrium relations has been proposed under a constant vapor discharging flow rate and liquid composition changes have been calculated using the vapor pressures with respect to a dimensionless time. The behaviors have been compared with temperature and molten salt composition changes to simulate the process condition variation. The distillation of the residual salt has been dominated by LiCl which is the main component of the salt and CsCl of which vapor pressure is higher than that of LiCl would be readily removed. RbCl exhibits similar vapor pressure with LiCl and maintains its composition. However, $SrCl_2$ and $BaCl_2$ of which vapor pressures are much lower than that of LiCl are concentrated with time and expected to be possibly precipitated during the distillation when the initial compositions are increased.

  • A complex chemical equilibrium analysis was performed to study the hot-wall CVD process of the SiC/C functionally gradient materials (FGM). Thermochemical calculations of the Si-C-H-Cl system were carried out, and the effects of process variables(deposition temperature, reactor pressure, C/[Si+C] and H/[Si+C] ratios in the source gas) on the composition of deposited layers and the deposition yield were investigated. The CVD phase diagrams of the SiC/C FGM deposition were obtained, and the optimum process windows were estimated from the results.

  • In order to develop the carbonation process as a core technology of zero emission coal power plant, study on characterization of methane steam reforming (MSR) which is main reaction of this process was carried out. The effects of gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), steam/carbon (S/C) ratio and pressure in the MSR using reforming catalyst were investigated. The equilibrium composition of the gases produced in the MSR were obtained below GHSV 7,000 hr$\^$-1/. The operating conditions of carbonation process using hybrid reaction (MSR+CO$_2$ adsorption using CaO) were 700∼800$^{\circ}C$ and S/C ratio of 2.5∼3. The equilibrium mixture of gases composed of 75∼78% H$_2$ and 8∼9% CO$_2$ at atmospheric pressure and 60∼78% H$_2$ and 9∼l1% CO$_2$ at 1∼30 atm respectively under above operating conditions.

  • Scoria is a bomb-sized, generally vesicular pyroclast that is red or black in color and light in weight. In this study, scoria from Cheju was examined for the use as a sorbent. It is composed of plagioclase, olivine, hornblende, pyroxene, and glass, with an average composition of 49.84% SiO$_2$, 14.07% A1$_2$O$_3$, End 9.14% Fe$_2$O$_3$. Studies on kinetic isotherm sorption of Zn(II) onto scoria under various parameters such as initial zinc concentration, particle size, and adsorbent/adsorbate ratio were carried out using an agitated batch. The results suggest that the smaller scoria size and the larger adsorbent/adsorbate ratio produce the higher degree of Zn(II) removal. More effective removal also appears at lower initial Zn concentration. The sorption behavior of Zn(II) onto scoria seems to be mainly controlled by cation exchange. Studies on equilibrium isotherm sorption of other heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Cd) onto scoria were also conducted and compared with those onto powdered activated carbon (PAC) and non-organic matter scoria (NOS), The results suggest that the Cheju scoria has the slightly higher sorption capability than PAC and NOS, and the order of the effective sorption onto scoria and PAC is Pb > Cu > Zn > Cd. The monometal sorption onto scoria is more stronger than the competitive sorption.
