  • To analyze the gas discharge phenomena in parallel-plane electrodes, the fully coupled finite element method (FEM) considering secondary electron emission effects in discharge column was adopted in this paper. Two coupled equations of the hydrodynamic diffusion-drift equations for three carriers and the Poisson's equation for electric scalar potential should be solved as a system equation. The proposed method including two secondary electron processes of the photoemission and background ionization has been successfully applied to evaluating the breakdown voltage in parallel-plane electrodes and is verified by comparing its numerical results with the experimental ones. From the obtained results, it is inferred that the proposed numerical scheme will be useful for predicting and understanding streamer transient phenomena.

  • Plates are most widely used in the hulls of floating concrete structures, bridge decks, walls of off-shore structures and liquid storage tanks. A method of analysis is presented for the determination of load-deflection response and ultimate strength of high-strength steel fiber reinforced concrete (HSSFRC) plates simply supported on all four edges and subjected to combined action of external compressive in-plane and transverse loads. The behavior of HSSFRC plate specimens subjected to combined uniaxial in-plane and transverse loads was investigated. The proposed analytical method is compared to the physical test results, and shows good agreement. To predict the constitutive behavior of HSSFRC in compression, a non-dimensional characteristic equation was proposed and found to give reasonable accuracy.

  • Using a vortex stretching invariant term, the two-layer k-.epsilon. model has been modified to account for the extra staining of turbulence due to the mean-flow convergence and divergence. The calculations of turbulent boundary layers in a plane of symmetry are compared for experimental cases which are an axisymmetric body at an incidence of 15.deg.. The comparisons between the calculations and experimental data show that additional modifications to the dissipation rate equation have brought the significant improvement to the prediction of plane of symmetry boundary layers in the strong mean-flow convergence and divergence.

  • Using the theory of linear piezoelectricity, the problem of two layered strip with a piezoelectric ceramic bonded to an elastic material containing a finite interface crack is considered. The out-of-plane mechanical and in-plane electrical loadings are simultaneously applied to the strip. Fourier transforms are used to reduce the problem to a pair of dual integral equations, which is then expressed in terms of a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. The stress intensity factor is determined, and numerical analyses for several materials are performed and discussed.

  • Nonlinear Vibration of a flexible circular ring is studied in this paper. Based upon the von Karman strain theory, the nonlinear governing equations are derived, in which the in-plane bending and extension displacements as well as the out-of-plane bending displacement are fully coupled. After discretizing the governing equations by the Galerkin approximation method, we obtain the linearlized equation by using the pertubation method. The results from the linearlized equations show that the in-plane displacement has effects on the natural frequencies of the out-of-plane displacement.

  • An analysis is made of flow and rocket motion during a supersonic separation stage of air-launching rocket(ALR) from the mother plane. Three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations is numerically solved to analyze the steady/unsteady flow field around the rocket which is being separated from the mother plane configuration(F-4E Phantom). The simulation results clearly demonstrate the effect of shock-expansion wave interaction between the rocket and the mother plane. To predict the behavior of the ALR according to the change of the C.G., three cases of numerical analysis are performed. As a result, a design-guideline of supersonic air-launching rocket for the safe separation is proposed.

  • In this paper, first we introduce the full expression of the curvature tensor of a real hypersurface M in complex two-plane Grass-mannians $G_2(\mathbb{C}^{m+2})$ from the equation of Gauss and derive a new formula for the Ricci tensor of M in $G_2(\mathbb{C}^{m+2})$. Next we prove that there do not exist any Hopf real hypersurfaces in complex two-plane Grassmannians $G_2(\mathbb{C}^{m+2})$ with parallel and commuting Ricci tensor. Finally we show that there do not exist any Einstein Hopf hypersurfaces in $G_2(\mathbb{C}^{m+2})$.

  • In this paper, we examine the dynamic electromechanical behavior of an edge crack in a piezoelectric ceramic layer bonded between two elastic layers under the combined anti-plane mechanical shear and in-plane electric transient loadings. We adopted both the permeable and impermeable crack boundary conditions. Fourier transforms are used to reduce the problem to the solution of two pairs of dual integral equations, which are then expressed to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Numerical values on the dynamic energy release rate are presented to show the dependences upon the geometry, material combination, electromechanical coupling coefficient and electric field.

  • Radiative heating of a liquid rocket base plane due to plume emission is numerically investigated. Calculation of flow and temperature fields around rocket nozzle precedes and thereby realistic plume shape and temperature distribution inside the plume are obtained. Based on the calculated temperature field, radiative transfer equation is solved by discrete ordinate method. The averaged radiative heat flux reaching the base plane is about $5kW/m^2$ at the flight altitude of 10.9km. This value is small compared with radiative heat flux caused by constant-temperature (1500K) plume emission, but it is not negligibly small. At higher altitude (29.8km), view factor between the babe plane and the exhaust plume is increased due to the increased expansion angle of the plume. Nevertheless, the radiative heating disappears since the base plane is heated to high temperature (above 1000K) due to convective heat transfer.
