Column shear failures observed during recent earthquakes and experimental data indicate that shear deformations are typically associated with the amount of transverse reinforcement, column aspect ratio, axial load, and a few other parameters. It was shown that in some columns shear displacements can be significantly large, especially after flexural yielding. In this paper, a piecewise linear model is developed to predict an envelope of the cyclic shear response including the shear displacement and corresponding strength predictions at the first shear cracking, peak strength, onset of lateral strength degradation, and loss of axial-load-carrying capacity. Part of the proposed model is developed using the analysis results from the Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT). The results from the proposed model, which uses simplified equations, are compared with the column test data.
In this study, the failure behavior of composite material in the biaxial and off-axis loading is studied based on a computational micromechanical model. The model is developed so that the combination of mechanical and thermal loading conditions can be considered in the analysis. The modified generalized plane strain assumption of the theory of elasticity is used for formulation of the micromechanical modeling of the problem. A truly meshless method is employed to solve the governing equation and predict the distribution of micro-stresses in the selected RVE of composite. The fiber matrix interface is assumed to be perfect until the interface failure occurs. The biaxial and off-axis loading of the SiC/Ti and Kevlar/Epoxy composite is studied. The failure envelopes of SiC/Ti and Kevlar/Epoxy composite in off-axis loading, biaxial transverse-transverse and axial-transverse loading are predicted based on the micromechanical approach. Various failure criteria are considered for fiber, matrix and fiber-matrix interface. Comparison of results with the available results in the litreture shows excellent agreement with experimental studies.
A stochastic response spectrum method is proposed for simple evaluation of the structural response of an actively controlled aseismic structure. The response spectrum is constructed assuming a linear structure with an active mass damper (AMD) system, and an earthquake wave model given by the product of a non-stationary envelope function and a stationary Gaussian random process with Kanai-Tajimi power spectral density. The control design is executed using a linear quadratic Gaussian control strategy for an enlarged state space system, and the response amplification factor is given by the combination of the obtained statistical response values and extreme value theory. The response spectrum thus produced can be used for simple dynamical analyses. The response factors obtained by this method for a multi-degree-of-freedom structure are shown to be comparable with those determined by numerical simulations, demonstrating the validity and utility of the proposed technique as a simple design tool. This method is expected to be useful for engineers in the initial design stage for structures with active aseismic control.
Let R be a commutative ring and let M be a GV -torsionfree R-module. Then M is said to be a $\omega$-module if $Ext_R^1$(R/J, M) = 0 for any J $\in$ GV (R), and the w-envelope of M is defined by $M_{\omega}$ = {x $\in$ E(M) | Jx $\subseteq$ M for some J $\in$ GV (R)}. In this paper, $\omega$-modules over commutative rings are considered, and the theory of $\omega$-operations is developed for arbitrary commutative rings. As applications, we give some characterizations of $\omega$-Noetherian rings and Krull rings.
The aim of this study is to describe the physical processes taking place in the solar photosphere. Based on 3D hydrodynamic simulations including a detailed radiation transfer scheme, we investigate thermodynamic structures and radiation fields in solar surface convection. As a starting model, the initial stratification in the outer envelope calculated using the solar calibrations in the context of the standard stellar theory. When the numerical fluid becomes thermally relaxed, the thermodynamic structure of the steady-state turbulent flow was explicitly collected. Particularly, a non-grey radiative transfer incorporating the opacity distribution function was considered in our calculations. In addition, we evaluate the classical approximations that are usually adopted in the onedimensional stellar structure models. We numerically reconfirm that radiation fields are well represented by the asymptotic characteristics of the Eddington approximation (the diffusion limit and the streaming limit). However, this classical approximation underestimates radiation energy in the shallow layers near the surface, which implies that a reliable treatment of the non-grey line opacities is crucial for the accurate description of the photospheric convection phenomenon.
Empirical likelihood ratio method is a new technique in nonparametric inference developed by A. Owen (1988, 2001). Sometimes empirical likelihood has difficulties to define itself. As such a case in point, we discuss the way to define a modified empirical likelihood for the location of symmetry using well-known points of symmetry as a side conditions. The side condition of symmetry is defined through a finite subset of the infinite set of constraints. The modified empirical likelihood under symmetry studied in this paper is to construct a constrained parameter space $\theta+$ of distributions imposing known symmetry as side information. We show that the usual asymptotic theory (Wilks theorem) still hold for the empirical likelihood ratio on the constrained parameter space and the asymptotic distribution of the empirical NPMLE of difference of two symmetric points is obtained.

In this study, the MCC(modified Cam-Clay) model and the Hvorslev-MCC model, recently developed based on the critical state theory and with relatively few model parameters, were investigated by comparing the model predictions with the result of the conventional triaxial compression test strictly performed in laboratory. The discrepancy of the prediction capacities of the models exists on the heavily over-consolidated specimen. The Hvorslev-MCC model accurately predicts the peak strength envelope for heavily over-consolidated clayey specimens on the dry side of the critical state since it adopts the Hvorslev surface in the supercritical region other than the ellipse of the MCC model.

The main object of this study are to investigate an effect of the characteristics of materials and to seize the behavior of fatigue failure of asphalt pavement with the results of laboratory tests for asphalt mixtures. In order to prove the practical application of applied methods, the relationships between temperature, depth of asphalt layer, elastic modulus and the number of fatigue failure by the results of elastic theory and fatigue failure envelope are also considered.
In this paper, we analyzed the sensitivity of matching elements for the dual-band operation of a power amplifier with composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines. Metamaterial theory enables CRLH transmission to support arbitrary impedance matching at dual frequencies. In general, at sub-GHz range, the CRLH matching networks are commonly implemented with lumped elements, which are prone to manufacturing distribution. In order to reduce the effect from the distribution of element values in design, we suggest a method to analyze the sensitivity of matching elements from the performance aspect of power amplifiers. Based on the analysis, a 40dBm dual-band power amplifier operating at 0.7GHz and 1.5GHz is designed.
We investigate 3D radiation-hydrodynamics (RHD) for surface convection of the solar-type low-mass stars (M = 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0 Msun). The outer convection zone (CZ) of low-mass stars is an extremely turbulent region composed of partly ionized compressible gases at high temperature. Particularly, the super-adiabatic layer (SAL), the top of the CZ is the transition region where the transport of energy changes drastically from convection to radiation. In order to accurately describe physical processes, a realistic treatment of radiation should be considered as well as convection. As a starting model, the initial stratification in the outer envelope calculated using the solar calibrations in the context of the standard stellar theory. When the numerical fluid becomes thermally relaxed, the thermodynamic structure of the steady-state turbulent flow was explicitly collected. In this presentation, we compared thermodynamic properties of turbulent convection of the solar-type low-mass stars.
