Enrofloxacin (ENRO) is one of the most commonly used fluoroquinolones for treating bacterial disease in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) farming, but its withdrawal time for industrial-scale farming has not been well established. Withdrawal times of ENRO following oral administration were evaluated in olive flounder under field conditions. Fish were held in an inland fish tank and fed a commercial mediated diet containing 5 mg/kg of ENRO for 9 days. Seven fish per sampling point were examined during and after treatment. ENRO and its major metabolite, ciprofloxacin (CIP), were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector. The concentration of ENRO and CIP in muscle increased during the medication period, and then decreased rapidly The sum of ENRO and CIP concentration in olive flounder peaked on day 6, with a maximal concentration in muscle of 4.30 mg/kg. ENRO residues were eliminated rapidly; at 10 days post treatment, the level in muscle was 0.10 mg/kg, but it took about 50 days to be reduced to below 0.1 mg/kg. After 60 days, the residual concentration was below 0.1 mg/kg in all samples. The level of ENRO accumulation at the beginning of oral administration was variable, according to the farming conditions, but the overall exhaustion time was almost the same. We concluded that an adequate withdrawal period of enrofloxacin is 60 days in the case of oral administration.

The residual contents of fluoroquinolones in fish and shrimp were analyzed by using HPLC-FLD and LC-MS. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for fluoroquinolones by HPLC-FLD were 0.0030-0.0083 and 0.0090-0.0252 mg/kg, respectively. Those by LC-MS were 0.0019-0.0040 and 0.0059-0.0122 mg/kg, respectively. Recoveries regarding ofloxacin, norfloxacin, pefloxacin, ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin ranged from 76.4-104.6%. The detection rate of fluoroquinolones was 7.5% from a total of 268 samples. In only one Korean bullhead sample, the sum of ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin contents was detected at a higher level than its maximum residue limits (MRL) of 0.1 mg/kg. Ofloxacin, norfloxacin and pefloxacin were not detected in any samples and detection rates of ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin were 3.4% and 6.7%, respectively. In detection rate by species eel (2.6%), loach (2.2%), Korean bullhead (1.5%), carp (0.7%) and snakehead (0.4%) were in order.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vivo and in vitro efficacy of enrofloxacin-silver sulfadiazine (Baytril$^{(R)}$ otic, Bayer, USA) for the treatment of otitis externa in dogs. Twenty-four dogs with otitis externa were included in this double-blinded, randomized study. The experimental group was treated with the Baytril$^{(R)}$ otic and the distilled water was applied to the control group. Both groups were administered each solution twice daily for 7 days and next 7 days off treatment. On days 0, 7 and 14, clinical signs, bacteriological and fungal counts were graded using semi-quantitative scales, respectively. For the evaluation of in vitro efficacy of Baytril$^{(R)}$ otic, we also performed Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test by agar dilution method against Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Malassezia pachydermatis. In the experimental group, the sum of clinical scores was decreased 81.0% and microbial scores were significantly reduced 87.0% at days 14, compared with day 0. The results of MIC testing were showed the concentration of enrofloxacin and silver sulfadiazine in Baytril$^{(R)}$ otic is high enough to kill for 3 infectious agents. No adverse reactions were observed in any of the dogs during this study. These results suggest that Baytril$^{(R)}$ otic are efficient and safe treatment for canine otitis externa.
For the purpose of effective therapy and prevention of post weaning E. coli diarrhea, Enrofloxacin-(Baytril premix) was administered in the feed and a series of investigations were made the occurence of diarrhea, weight gain, feed conversion rate, changes In the counts of faecal E. coli and susceptibility of the isolated E. coli strains to antimicrobials. The results obtained were as follows 1. The weaned piglets which were treated with Baytril premix gained the average body weight of 3.2kg over the control group at the age of 62 days. The result indicates a marked weight gain effect which, by statiscal analysis, showed a significant difference(P<0.01). Administration of Baytril premix also resulted in the improvement of feed conversion rate and provention of post weaning diarrhea. 2. The counts of faecal E. coli in Baytri premx treated piglets showed a marked decrease from 3.14${\times}$10$\^$8/cells/g to 2${\times}$10$\^$7/cells/g at 5days post treatment and 1${\times}$10$\^$5/cells/g at 10 days post treatment. 3. 10 strains of E. coli isolated fred the experimental pig farm were highly susceptible to Bayoil, gentamicin and trimethoprim plus sulfamethoxazole.

Fluoroquinoles have a wide range of antimicrobial properties and are effective in the treatment of bacterial diseases in fish. The use of fluoroquinoles continues to grow steadily. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are probably the most important class used among synthetic antibiotics in human and veterinary medicines because of their broad activity spectrum and good oral absorption. This study was conducted to estimate the residue of antibiotics in four species of farmed fishes, including olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), black rock fish (Sebastes schlegeli), red sea bream (Pagrus major), and sea bass (Lateolabrax japonicus), collected from fish farms located in the southern coastal area of Korea. The residues of fluoroquinolones were determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a fluorescence detector. Residuals of five fluoroquinolones in muscle tissue of farmed fish were analyzed. We found that enrofloxacin was the most common agent in fish muscle, and that ciprofloxacin was the next most common. The range of detected concentrations of fluoroquinolones in olive flounder muscle was 0-0.859 mg/kg in 32.6% of all samples. Enrofloxacin was commonly detected in sea bass muscle at a range of 0-0.143 mg/kg in 38.9% of all samples. Fluoroquinolones were detected in 6.9% of black rock fish muscle and in 16.6% of sea bream, although the detected concentration was below 0.01 mg/kg. The maximum detection value of enrofloxacin and ofloxacin in olive flounder at the time of shipping was 0.102 mg/kg and 0.09 mg/kg, respectively; no other antimicrobials were detected. We detected no antimicrobial substances in red sea bream.
This study was conducted to analyze feasibility of monitoring of fluoroquinolnes residual through feather analysis in broilers. The calibration curve showed good linearity (r2≥0.99) within the concentration range of 1~100 ㎍/kg. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were validated at ≤0.66 and ≤1.99 ㎍/kg in broiler feather, respectively. The recoveries in feather samples ranged from 94.6 to 114.4% (5.1-15.8% RSD) at the 5 to 20 ㎍/kg spiking levels. The proposed new analytical method proved to be suitable and effective for fluoroquinolnes determination. We also monitored fluoroquinolones residue in 36 samples (broiler that were slaughtered in Gyonggi-do) using this method. Among tested feather samples, enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were detected in all samples. In muscle samples, enrofloxacin was detected in 20 (55.6%) samples and ciprofloxacin was not detected.
This surveies were carried out to investigate the residual levels of fluoroquinolones in chicken and quail eggs by bioassay and HPLC method. The eggs of 240 samples collected from market and farm in Gwangju Metropolitan city were examined from May to December in 2003. Residual antibiotic materials were detected from 47 samples of the 240 eggs by bioassay. Of the 240 eggs assayed, ciprofloxacin, danofloxacin, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, orbifloxacin and perfloxacin were not detected but enrofloxacin was detected from 5 samples in 228 chicken eggs and 1 sample in 12 quail eggs using HPLC with fluorescence detector by multi-residue method. 2 sample eggs in 6 sample which were detected by HPLC were not positive with bioassay. The average residual concentration of enrofloxacin was 0.494 mg/kg in 6 positive samples. The highest residual concentration of enrofloxacin was 1.83mg/kg.
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the distribution of quinolone and to investigate the effects of quinolones (enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin) in blood(plasma) and eggs of laying hens. Animals were fed quinolones which supplemented with 20, 50, 80 mg/kg of body weight. Blood and egg samples were collected after oral administration and analyzed for quinolones (enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin) by HPLC. In laying hens, the residue period of enrofloxacin were longer than that of ciprofloxacin and the levels of residues were elavated by drug dosage.
