A Research on the Format for Romanization of Korean Personal Name (한국인명의 로마자표기 형식에 대한 연구)

  • Due to the increase of international business and activities, Koreans nowadays have higher needs to present their personal identity to the foreigners. In this process, the first requirement is to exchange personal names with foreigners. Therefore, the phonetic translation of Korean names into Roman alphabetic notation is frequently required, in order to deliver Korean personal names to the people who do not understand Korean alphabet. However, some confusions have been witnessed in the way of transforming Korean names into Roman (English) alphabet notation, due to the fact that there are many different ways to put Korean pronunciation into Roman (English) alphabet. This study examines different formats of Romanization of Korean personal names to find and suggest an optimal one. It first examines structures of and differences between Korean and Western personal names and usage patterns, reviews the issues surrounding Romanization of Korean personal names, and patternizes diverse Romanization formats currently used. Based on these examinations and consequent findings, I would like to suggest a format for the Romanization of Korean personal names which is considered to be the best.

Error Correction for Korean Speech Recognition using a LSTM-based Sequence-to-Sequence Model

  • Recently, since most of the research on correcting speech recognition errors is based on English, there is not enough research on Korean speech recognition. Compared to English speech recognition, however, Korean speech recognition has many errors due to the linguistic characteristics of Korean language, such as Korean Fortis and Korean Liaison, thus research on Korean speech recognition is needed. Furthermore, earlier works primarily focused on editorial distance algorithms and syllable restoration rules, making it difficult to correct the error types of Korean Fortis and Korean Liaison. In this paper, we propose a context-sensitive post-processing model of speech recognition using a LSTM-based sequence-to-sequence model and Bahdanau attention mechanism to correct Korean speech recognition errors caused by the pronunciation. Experiments showed that by using the model, the speech recognition performance was improved from 64% to 77% for Fortis, 74% to 90% for Liaison, and from 69% to 84% for average recognition than before. Based on the results, it seems possible to apply the proposed model to real-world applications based on speech recognition.

A Comparative Study of Aphasics' Abilities in Reading and Writing Hangul and Hanja

  • In Korean, as with Kana and Kanji in Japanese, two kinds of word-writing systems--Hangul (the Korean alphabet) and Hanja (the Chinese character; Kanji in Japanese)--have been and still are being used. Hangul is phonetic while Hanja is ideographic. A phonetic alphabet represents the pronunciation of words, wheras ideographs are where a character of a writing system represents a concept. Aphasics suffer from language disorders following brain damage. The reading and writing of Hangul and Hanja by two Korean Broca's aphasics were analyzed with two goals. The first goal was to confirm the functional autonomy of reading and writing systems in the brain that has been argued by other researchers. The second goal was to reveal what difference the subjects show in reading and writing Hangul and Hanja. As experimental materials, 50 monosyllabic words were chosen in Hangul and Hanja respectively. The 50 word pairs of Hangul and Hanja have the same meaning and are also the most familiar monosyllabic words for a group of normal adults in their fifties and sixties. The errors that the aphasic subjects made in performing the experimental materials are analyzed and discussed here. This analysis has confirmed that reading and writing systems are located in different parts in the brain. Furthemore, it seems clear that the two writing systems of Hangul and Hanja have their own respective processes.

  • Human beings and chimpanzees are very much alike. and scientists say there is only 1% difference between them. Contrary to our expectations, the difference lies not in brains but in tracheas ( windpipes ). Those of human beings are bigger and longer than those of chimpanzees. Thu means more air is inspired and expired as breath. About breath there are interesting descriptions in the Bible. In the Genesis it says God made a man out of soil and breathed life-giving breath into his nostrils and the man began to live. In other part it says life exists between incoming breath and outgoing breath. Thus breath plays key role is our life. In Hebrew and Greek, breath and spirit are the same words. In Hebrew it is ‘Luahf’ and in Greek, ‘Pneuma’ With breath and mouth organs human beings produced voice, and with haritage and through leaning we train our voice to reach the level of language which convey our culture. My contention is to realize the gift of voice and train it so that it can perform proper function as a tool of conveying our thought and culture. This is a kind of practice of speech and it may be called speechology. It includes the following practical methods: 1. Try to read aloud. 2. Encourage recitation, 3. Make public speaking as possible. 4. Learn theories of phonetics; such as about pronunciation, accent, intonation, prominence, assimilation and so on.

  • 본 논문은 의료분야의 음성 인식 시스템의 발음모델의 성능 향상에 필요한 올바른 영어 단어 발음열을 얻고자 한다. 본 시스템의 텍스트는 의료 전문 용어인 영어와 한글의 조합으로 되어있어, 한국어 G2P 성능뿐만 아니라 영어 G2P의 성능도 중요한 문제가 되고 있다. 또한 본 시스템의 의료 음성 데이터가 한국 화자로써, 표기열이 영어식 발음 폰셋으로 변환되면 효율적이지 못하다. 이를 위해, 영어 G2P의 결과를 한국 화자에 적합하게 변환해주는 방법론이 필요하게 된다. 따라서 본 논문에서 제안하는 방법은 음성 텍스트에서 영어만 추출한 후, 영어 G2P 프로그램(addttp, NIST)을 이용해 발음열을 구한다. 그리고 한국 화자의 실제 음성을 통해 얻은 정답 발음열을 구하여 서로 비교한다. 비교를 위해 각 발음열의 한 폰씩 정렬을 수행한 후, 삽입, 삭제, 대치 에러가 이러나는 쌍과 좌우 바이그램 정보를 추출한다. 마지막으로, 좌우 바이그램 정보에서 best1의 에러 패턴을 통해 모든 단어에 적용한다. 이 때, 최종적으로 실보다 득이 되는 에러패턴만을 추출, 적용한다. 실험에서는 26여개의 에러 패턴을 찾을 수 있어, 8%의 올바른 발음열을 추가적으로 얻는데 성공하였다.

A study on terminological definition of tsunami in Korean (Tsunami (津波)의 한글표현에 대한 소고)

  • In this study, the validity of the Korean expression for tsunami will be examined and a method to use it correctly will be proposed. First, we will review the scientific definition of the tsunami and the origin of the tsunami expressed in various languages. Based on this review, after reviewing whether the Korean expression 'Jijinhaeil', which is currently used representatively in Korea, a reasonable method that can be used appropriately will be proposed. In conclusion, it is suggested that the Korean pronunciation of tsunami should be used in a uniform manner as in the case of English and other languages.

An analysis of emotional English utterances using the prosodic distance between emotional and neutral utterances (영어 감정발화와 중립발화 간의 운율거리를 이용한 감정발화 분석)

  • An analysis of emotional English utterances with 7 emotions (calm, happy, sad, angry, fearful, disgust, surprised) was conducted using the measurement of prosodic distance between 672 emotional and 48 neutral utterances. Applying the technique proposed in the automatic evaluation model of English pronunciation to the present study on emotional utterances, Euclidean distance measurement of 3 prosodic elements such as F0, intensity and duration extracted from emotional and neutral utterances was utilized. This paper, furthermore, extended the analytical methods to include Euclidean distance normalization, z-score and z-score normalization resulting in 4 groups of measurement schemes (sqrF0, sqrINT, sqrDUR; norsqrF0, norsqrINT, norsqrDUR; sqrzF0, sqrzINT, sqrzDUR; norsqrzF0, norsqrzINT, norsqrzDUR). All of the results from perceptual analysis and acoustical analysis of emotional utteances consistently indicated the greater effectiveness of norsqrF0, norsqrINT and norsqrDUR, among 4 groups of measurement schemes, which normalized the Euclidean measurement. The greatest acoustical change of prosodic information influenced by emotion was shown in the values of F0 followed by duration and intensity in descending order according to the effect size based on the estimation of distance between emotional utterances and neutral counterparts.   • Brand names are often considered as a part of product and important extrinsic cues of product evaluation, when consumers make purchasing decisions. For a company, brand names are also important assets. Building a strong brand name in the Chinese commonwealth is a main challenge for many global companies. One of the first problem global company has to face is how to translate English brand name into Chinese brand name. It is very difficult decision because of cultural and linguistic differences. Western languages are based on an alphabet phonetic system, whereas Chinese are based on ideogram. Chinese speakers are more likely to recall stimuli presented as brand names in visual rather than spoken recall, whereas English speakers are more likely to recall the names in spoken rather than in visual recall. We interpret these findings in terms of the fact that mental representations of verbal information in Chinese are coded primarily in a visual manner, whereas verbal information in English is coded by primarily in a phonological manner. A key linguistic differences that would affect the decision to standardize or localize when transferring English brand name to Chinese brand name is the writing system. Prior Chinese brand naming research suggests that popular Chinese naming translations foreign companies adopt are phonetic, semantic, and phonosemantic translation. The phonetic translation refers to the speech sound that is produced, such as the pronunciation of the brand name. The semantic translation involves the actual meaning of and association made with the brand name. The phonosemantic translation preserves the sound of the brand name and brand meaning. Prior brand naming research has dealt with word-level analysis in examining English brand name that are desirable for improving memorability. We predict Chinese brand name suggestiveness with different translation methods lead to different levels of consumers' evaluations. This research investigates the structural linguistic characteristics of the Chinese language and its impact on the brand name evaluation. Otherwise purpose of this study is to examine the effect of brand concept on the evaluation of brand name. We also want to examine whether the evaluation is moderated by Chinese translation types. 178 Taiwanese participants were recruited for the research. The following findings are from the empirical analysis on the hypotheses established in this study. In the functional brand concept, participants in Chinese translation by semantic were likely to evaluate positively than Chinese translation by phonetic. On the contrary, in the symbolic brand concept condition, participants in Chinese translation by phonetic evaluated positively than by semantic. And then, we found Chinese translation by phonosemantic was most favorable evaluations regardless of brand concept. The implications of these findings are discussed for Chinese commonwealth marketers with respect to brand name strategies.   • This study proposes an educational game system that fit for portable internet environment as a solution to disadvantages of conventional education systems such as lack of understanding learners' learning level and one-way learning. The study analyses conventional e-Learning contents and platforms and proposes a new system adequate for high contents reusability and user-demand service. The learning contents that mainly consist of animations and games can be adjusted to learners' level, and therefore, learners can study according to various scenarios, not constrained in a fixed pattern. Our system is expected to bring much more fun to learners and the education can be conducted more effectively. To show the effectiveness of our system, an example of english pronunciation game was illustrated. As a result, the week points of the conventional e-Learning was overcame and new features of the interactivity was adopted to build a more effective educational game system.

"Knownism"-Bridge-Building Philosophy Between Science and Religion (가지론("Known 사상")-과학과 종교의 가교)

  • The writer has worked out his original philosophy both scientific and religious, which he calls "Knownism" The new thought states; the word "known" in "knownism" means "already well-informed in the providence" about the essence of the things, and the true state of the reality, hence the knownism, as the existence of God is set forth as a premise. The knownism is a philosophy unified reasonably the science and the faith into one, for the humans can perceive and realize the essence and the true state, and authorize the truth transcending the experience by the scientific method. The new thought of the knownism is a bridge-building between the natural science and the religious faith. The idea explains that the life is the process to pursue the essence of the things and the god, and the truth is immanent in the original nature of things and in God′s sphere. This thought is a philorophy of possibility to solve the paradigms-to-be such as thinking, faith experience, and supernatural power, so that it presents a vision in the human life as a profitable religious science philosophy. The knownism is much different from agnosticism, skepticism, empiricism, and agnosticism. The grace of God may be detected differently from the supernatural power. The new dark clouds overspread abruptly the summer sky are not new ones but originally derived frosm worn-out water drops. Thus those are called the old clouds. The Korean word "known"(노운) of which pronunciation is same with the English "known" means the old clouds, hence also the name, Knownism. The root of the new clouds is detectable from the preserved old clouds. The old clouds symbolized in the paper indicate the essence and the principles of the things and the fittest, or the key for the solution of the problem in the epistemology, believing that everything has its own, proper nature, the writer sums up his theory by insisting that the humans have to find out the "old clouds" or the "known" in knownism to live eternally either in this world or in other dimensions, though the human beings are transformed into the other phases of life. The writer proclaims through the ideas for the United Nations to fortify the Confederate System of World Nations in order to ensure the world peace and the future of the humans.
