융합인재교육(STEAM)의 아웃리치 프로그램 개발 및 운영 사례 (A Case Study of the STEAM Educational Outreach Program Development and their Application)

  • This study aims to conduct a case study of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) outreach program development and their application. This program was operated by 184 middle and high school students at C University on October 2014. The major results of these studies were as follows: First, The theme of the outreach program consisted of four engineering areas, aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, architectural engineering, and mechatronics (robot) engineering; moreover, the materials for the students' workbook, the guidebook for teachers, and the program operation manual for staffs in a university were developed by working with four authors and ten subject matter experts. Second, the satisfaction level with the contents and activities was ranged from 4.24-4.31 out of 5 points. Third, the vitalizing activation plan was discussed for the sustainable development and operation of the STEAM outreach program.

  • 우리나라의 창의성교육과 관련하여 학생들의 종합적 사고력과 논리력을 키우기 위해 융합(STEAM)교육에 대한 연구가 활발하다. STEAM의 각 요소들은 서로 연결되어 종합적으로 문제해결 할 수 있는 능력으로서 창의적 사고를 필요로 한다. 또한 이런 활동과 경험은 교실을 벗어난 다양한 현장에서 이루어져야 한다. 초 중고등 학생들에게 다양한 수학 창의활동 교육이 강조되기는 하였으나 학교 현장에서는 교과 학습에 편중되는 경향이 있어 창의적인 융합적 사고를 키우기 어려운 실정이다. 이 연구는 초 중고등 학생들의 흥미를 극대화하고 수학을 바탕으로 창의적인 사고를 할 수 있는 STEAM의 요소들을 기반으로 학교의 장을 벗어나서 경험할 수 있는 아웃리치 교육 프로그램을 개발하는 과정과 그 효과성을 분석하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 그 결과, 흥미나 만족도가 높은 수준이었으며 STEAM 역량 전체점수 및 융합교육 인식은 초, 중, 고 모든 학생들에게 의미 있게 증가하였으며 학교급 별로 하위요인은 약간씩 다른 결과를 나타내었다. 이 연구에서 개발된 STEAM 아웃리치 프로그램은, 학생들이 수학 교과에 대한 흥미를 높임과 동시에 수학 관련 분야의 진로를 정할 때 도움이 되는 활동을 제공하고 있으며, 학교 현장에서 쉽게 접할 수 없는 다양한 활동들을 활용한 흥미있는 창의적 STEAM교육 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

Safety Education in the Curriculum of Construction Programs

  • Construction safety education will continue to attract the interests of construction educators, researchers, and industry professionals due to its immense influence on accident reduction and prevention. A well-educated workforce with a thorough understanding of safety requirements and procedures is needed to develop and apply effective safety and health programs as well as devise strategic means of preventing injuries, illnesses, and fatalities on construction projects. The objective of this research is to evaluate construction safety education in the curriculum of construction programs in the United States. An analysis of construction safety courses across accredited construction programs in the U.S. is conducted to synthesize important details and common themes. A nationwide characterization of the safety courses presented followed by an assessment selected a few programs as a pilot study. Critical elements of the courses such as course titles, course year, credit hours, topics covered, and alignment with professional certification or outreach training courses are characterized. Findings from the study reveal the similarities and variations that exist among safety courses taught in different construction programs in the U.S. These findings could result from several influencing factors, which could be the subject of further investigations geared toward improving safety education in construction programs.

Tufts University의 로봇활용교육 사례 소개 -CEEO의 Workshop을 중심으로- (An Introduction of Robotics Education in Tufts University -Workshops at CEEO-)

  • 본 논문에서는 미국 매사추세츠 주의 Tufts University 부설 CEEO(Center for Engineering Education and Outreach)에서 수행되고 있는 로봇활용교육 워크숍, Novel Engineering, STOMP 사례를 소개하고자 한다. CEEO는 미국의 많은 대학에서 롤모델로 삼을 만큼 로봇활용교육에서 가장 선도적인 센터이다. 이 센터에서는 초 중 고등학교 학생들과 교사들을 위한 로봇활용교육 워크숍이 매년 여름방학 때 진행되고 있다. 또한 공과대학 1학년 학생들은 Simple Robotics과목을 필수로 이수해야한다. 우리에게 생소한 Novel Engineering은 독서교육과 공학을 융합한 공학교육방법이다. STOMP(Students and Teachers Outreach Mentorship Program)는 초 중 고등학교 교사들이 공학을 필요로 하는 수업을 설계할 때, STOMP에 소속된 대학생과 대학원생들이 직접 수업에 참여하여 교사와 함께 수업을 이끌어나가도록 도와주는 프로그램이다. 소프트웨어 교육이 많이 활성화되어가고 있는 상황에서 우리나라에서도 이러한 프로그램들을 도입하여 시행한다면 소프트웨어 인재양성에 많은 기여를 할 수 있을 것이라고 기대한다.

Risk Perceptions of Noncommunicable Diseases among Cambodian Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study

  • Purpose: In Cambodia, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) account for 64% of all deaths. A lack of risk perception of NCDs leads to poor measures of their prevention and management. This study aimed to investigate Cambodians' risk perceptions of NCDs based on the health belief model. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used, and using convenience sampling, participants included 200 Cambodians aged 40 years or older. A face-to-face administered structured questionnaire was used to assess demographic characteristics, health behaviors, and risk perceptions of NCDs. Results: Of the constructs of NCD risk perception, perceived severity (88.2%) and benefits (86.3%) were high, but relative to these, perceived cues to action (64.1%), barriers (63.5%), and self-efficacy (58.1%) were low. Conclusion: It is important to improve perceived self-efficacy in government health promotion, outreach, and improvement programs and to reduce perceived barriers through medical tests either by facility-based delivery or via outreach health services in Cambodia.

호남지역 Sea Grant 사업단의 발전방향에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Strategic Plan for Honam Sea Grant College Program)

  • 본 연구에서는 호남지역 Sea Grant 사업단의 장기적인 발전방향 및 발전계획 수립에 관해 언급을 하고자 한다. 호남지역 Sea Grant 사업단에서는 지역의 해양 및 수산분야의 발전에 기여하기 위해 크게 연구개발, 교육홍보, 대민봉사활동에 주력하고 있다. 먼저, 연구개발분야에서 고려해야 할 사항들에 살펴보고 호남지역에 적합한 사업 분야를 도출한다. 다음으로 교육홍보분야에 있어서는 해양수산부 및 지역 내 관계기관에서 행하고 있는 해양교육프로그램의 현황을 살펴보고 추진해야 할 사업방향에 대해 제안할 것이다. 대민봉사활동 영역에 있어서는 대민활동의 필요요소들에 대해 언급하고 우리지역에 있어서 필요한 사업영역에 대해 언급할 것이다. 아울러 국내외 유관기관과의 연계를 통한 네트웍 구성방안에 대해서도 살펴볼 것이고, 이를 통해서는 사업단의 효율적인 운영방법에 대한 유익한 정보교류가 가능해 질 것이다. 마지막으로 지역 내의 현안문제를 도출하기 위해 실시한 설문조사결과에 대해 언급하고자 한다.

A Novel Engineering and Creative Learning Process Based on Constructionism

  • This paper shows that novel engineering (NE) is a creative learning process (CLP) based on Seymour Papert's constructionism. First, the paper introduces NE, CLP, and constructionism. Next, a sample NE lesson is explored. NE is an innovative way of integrating literacy into an engineering discipline that was developed by the Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) at Tufts University. NE consists of seven steps: picking a book, identifying problems, designing solutions, building, feedback, upgrading solutions, and reconstructing stories. Lifelong Kindergarten by Mitchel Resnick of the MIT Media Lab describes CLP, and the four elements necessary for a lesson to be creative. NE can be viewed as one of the most creative, comprehensive learning models ever developed. NE integrates several paradigms in Korea, following all the constructs of both CLP and constructionism. The aim of this paper is to show that NE is based on both CLP and constructionism.

  • In this paper, design specifications for a new generation container crane in year 2013 is investigated. After analyzing the trend of the development of container cranes from the 1950s to date, a prospective size for targeting year 2013 is proposed. Introductory specifications of the frame, trolley, hoist and spreader for the proposed new crane are discussed. Considering that the mega-ships will load and unload more than 15000 boxes at one stop, rough dimensions of the crane including outreach, rail gage, lift, backreach, etc. are also suggested. Although the sheer size of the cranes already present some challenges, the biggest challenge is to improve productivity by maximizing the moves per hour. For this, the speeds of trolleys and hoists, rail loads, stability, etc. are discussed.

  • The purpose of this paper was to explore delay avoiding measures and strategies. The paper was based on previous work of authors on finding delay causes. Firstly, the paper has discussed about delay avoidance measures prescribed by the previous work. As the previous study identified five main causes of construction delays, various measures and strategies to overcome those delay problems have been discussed in sequence in the last sections. Major delay prevention strategies are: involving stakeholders in the project decisions, outreach program, realistic time and resource estimation, try to adjust the triple constraints of time, cost and scope, ensure fair and complete disclosure of information at an early stage of the construction project, contractor, itself should inquire about patent design errors prior to submitting its bid, owner should include in its contract with the consultant an indemnity (protection) clause etc.

초대형 선박용 차세대 컨테이너 크레인의 설계기준 (Design Criteria of a Future Container Crane for Megaships)

  • In this paper, the design criteria of future container crane for megaships are investigated. The current loading/unloading capacity of a typical container crane, roughly 30 moves/hr, is too law to meet the requirements of future super containerships, which are expected over 15,000 TEU. After examining the transition of containerships through the years and studying the research trend in developed countries, the specifications of the container crane that can Meet a 15,000 TEU containership are proposed. The structure, trolley and hoist mechanism, outreach, backreach, capacity, speeds, durability, and stability of the future container crane are described.
